Creativity and Budgeting: Improving the Budget Process with Creativity

    Get PDF
In this master’s project I explore ways to improve a budget process by integrating the principles and tools of creativity and Creative Problem Solving. I do this by prototyping, testing, and revising a creativity-budget model. The creativity-budget prototype model was based on my professional experience in federal budgeting and a literature review on topics including governance, the budget process, stakeholders, collaboration, the impact of the budget process on the creativity of an organization, and the principles of creativity and creative problem solving. In July 2018, I tested the prototype model by conducting creativity-budget workshops in Myanmar. Based on my experience in Myanmar and additional literature review, I have revised my model. The revised creativity-budget model focuses on integrating the principles, thinking skills, and tools of creativity and Creative Problem Solving into the budget preparation (formulation) phase of the budget process. The revised model also integrates basic Creative Problem Solving phases with the other budget process phases: review and approval; execution; and evaluation and audit. I discuss areas for future research and refinements to my creativity-budget model

Pope Benedict XVI\u27s Caritas in Veritate : A Challenge to Business Ethics

    Get PDF
“Business ethics risks becoming subservient to existing economic and financial systems rather than correcting their dysfunctional aspects.” This statement from Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical letter Caritas in Veritate [Love in Truth] is both a challenge to business ethics and an example of the holistic model on which Catholic Social Thought is based. Ethical issues are embedded in anthropological presuppositions and this article describes the Pope’s analysis of the conflicting presuppositions regarding economic activity and the market in the current economic ideology and that of Catholic Social Thought. He sees the task of business ethics as addressing those presuppositions and he calls on the discipline to address not only the “traditional ethical principles of transparency, honest and responsibility” but also “a deeper reflection on meaning of the economy and its goals.” That reflection must be deeper, go beyond, the dominant view of the economy as a technical matter, autonomous from the rest of social relations and the moral sphere. That can only happen in dialogue among various disciplines, each contributing to a holistic and more adequate view of the economic side of human life and its Truth lived out in Love

Nonlinear localized modes in two-dimensional electrical lattices

    Get PDF
We report the observation of spontaneous localization of energy in two spatial dimensions in the context of nonlinear electrical lattices. Both stationary and traveling self-localized modes were generated experimentally and theoretically in a family of two-dimensional square, as well as hon- eycomb lattices composed of 6x6 elements. Specifically, we find regions in driver voltage and frequency where stationary discrete breathers, also known as intrinsic localized modes (ILM), exist and are stable due to the interplay of damping and spatially homogeneous driving. By introduc- ing additional capacitors into the unit cell, these lattices can controllably induce traveling discrete breathers. When more than one such ILMs are experimentally generated in the lattice, the interplay of nonlinearity, discreteness and wave interactions generate a complex dynamics wherein the ILMs attempt to maintain a minimum distance between one another. Numerical simulations show good agreement with experimental results, and confirm that these phenomena qualitatively carry over to larger lattice sizes.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Faculty Format Preferences in the Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study

    Get PDF
Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction
