    Double point contact in Quantum Hall Line Junctions

    We show that multiple point contacts on a barrier separating two laterally coupled quantum Hall fluids induce Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the tunneling conductance. These quantum coherence effects provide new evidence for the Luttinger liquid behavior of the edge states of quantum Hall fluids. For a two point contact, we identify coherent and incoherent regimes determined by the relative magnitude of their separation and the temperature. We analyze both regimes in the strong and weak tunneling amplitude limits as well as their temperature dependence. We find that the tunneling conductance should exhibit AB oscillations in the coherent regime, both at strong and weak tunneling amplitude with the same period but with different functional form.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; new version, edited text, 2 new references; figure 2 has been edited; new paragraph in page 1 and minor typos have been correcte

    NASA's progress in nuclear electric propulsion technology

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has established a requirement for Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) technology for robotic planetary science mission applications with potential future evolution to systems for piloted Mars vehicles. To advance the readiness of NEP for these challenging missions, a near-term flight demonstration on a meaningful robotic science mission is very desirable. The requirements for both near-term and outer planet science missions are briefly reviewed, and the near-term baseline system established under a recent study jointly conducted by the Lewis Research Center (LeRC) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is described. Technology issues are identified where work is needed to establish the technology for the baseline system, and technology opportunities which could provide improvement beyond baseline capabilities are discussed. Finally, the plan to develop this promising technology is presented and discussed

    Identifying Neurotransmitter Spill-over in Hippocampal Field Recordings

    A model of synaptic and extra-synaptic excitatory signaling in the hippocampus is presented. The model is used to analytically evaluate the potential contributions of homosynaptic and heterosynaptic glutamate spill-over to receptor signaling during an electrophysiological experiment in which glutamate transporters are pharmacologically blocked. Inhibition of glutamate uptake selectively prolongs the decay kinetics of the second field excitatory postsynaptic potential evoked by paired pulse stimulation of Schaffer collateral axons in area CA1. The model includes AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors, and the removal of glutamate by transporters and diffusion. We establish analytically that the prolongation cannot be caused by local effects, i.e., the transporters acting within or near the synapse. In contrast, a time profile of glutamate consistent with spill-over from adjacent synapses can explain the effect. The different reaction kinetics of AMPA and NMDA receptors have a significant role in reproducing the experimental results, as explained by analysis of the ODEs governing the reactions

    Fusion rules and vortices in px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductors

    The "half-quantum" vortices (σ\sigma) and quasiparticles (ψ\psi) in a two-dimensional px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductor obey the Ising-like fusion rules ψ×ψ=1\psi\times \psi=1, σ×ψ=σ\sigma\times \psi=\sigma, and σ×σ=1+ψ\sigma\times \sigma= 1+\psi. We explain how the physical fusion of vortex-antivortex pairs allows us to use these rules to read out the information encoded in the topologically protected space of degenerate ground states.     Experiments in the coordination of large groups of robots

    The use of large groups of robots, generally called swarms, has gained increased attention in recent years. In this paper, we present and experimentally validate an algorithm that allows a swarm of robots to navigate in an environment containing unknown obstacles. A coordination mechanism based on dynamic role assignment and local communication is used to help robots that may get stuck in regions of local minima. Experiments were performed using both a realistic simulator and a group of real robots and the obtained results showed the feasibility of the proposed approach

    To detect non-abelian statistics in the ν=12/5\nu = 12/5 quantum Hall state through interferometry, we apply an analysis similar to the ones proposed for the non-abelian ν=5/2\nu = 5/2 quantum Hall state. The result is that the amplitude of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation of this interference is dependent on the internal states of quasiholes, but, in contrast to the ν=5/2\nu = 5/2 quantum Hall state, independent of the number of quasiholes.     Selective Incision of the α-N5-Methyl-Formamidopyrimidine Anomer by Escherichia coli Endonuclease IV

    Formamidopyrimidines (Fapy) lesions result from ring opening of the imidazole portion of purines. Fapy lesions can isomerize from the natural β-anomeric stereochemistry to the α-configuration. We have unambiguously demonstrated that the α-methyl-Fapy-dG (MeFapy-dG) lesion is a substrate for Escherichia coli Endonuclease IV (Endo IV). Treatment of a MeFapy-dG-containing 24 mer duplex with Endo IV resulted in 36–40% incision. The catalytic efficiency of the incision was comparable to that of α-dG in the same duplex sequence. The α- and β-MeFapy-dG anomers equilibrate to ~21 : 79 ratio over ~3 days. Related studies with a duplex containing the α-Fapy-dG lesion derived from aflatoxin B1 epoxide (α-AFB-Fapy-dG) showed only low levels of incision. It is hypothesized that the steric bulk of the aflatoxin moiety interferes with the binding of the substrate to Endo IV and the incision chemistry
