This research addresses the occurrence of clinical signs and related symptoms of zoonotic diseases, traumatic injuries, and the frequency of healthcare seeking among practicing veterinarians, whose job was performed in the Los Lagos Region, Southern Chile. An online standardized survey collected from 140 practicing veterinarians was conducted between March and July 2020. The surveyed participants reported the occurrence of brucellosis, ringworm, scabies, cat scratch disease, anthrax, toxocariasis, salmonellosis, pediculosis, and flea infestation among veterinarians. The clinical signs and symptoms related to these events include diarrhea, allergies, and muscle pain. Mild and severe traumatic injuries were also declared by the participants, in which the frequency of severe trauma increased as the time of professional practice increased. Nevertheless, the use of professional healthcare was low among the surveyed veterinarians. This study emphasizes the need to consider veterinarians’ health-related occupational risks using the “One Health” approach

Combined effect of Fe2+ ions and the meta-isomer of dihydric phenol on duckweed

    Get PDF
The toxic effects of Fe2+ ions and resorcinol on Lemna minor in their joint presence in the aquatic environment were studied. The test response in the bioassay of solutions of Fe2+, resorcinol, and their mixtures was a violation of the permeability of duckweed membranes. This parameter was estimated from the change in the electrical conductivity of the aquatic medium in which the plant was placed, exposed to the toxicant in the acute experiment (30 min). It was found that the addition of both an equinormal concentration of Fe(II) (0.1n) and a five-fold deficiency (0.02n) to a 0.1n solution of resorcinol reduced the toxicity of resorcinol. Most likely, the effect obtained can be achieved by the formation of a new, less toxic compound (probably of a complex nature). The test used in the work, based on the assessment of the permeability of cell membranes under the action of toxicants, once again proved to be a promising tool for analyzing the combined toxicity of phenolic compounds and metal ions in relation to plant organisms

How many species of grey foxes (Canidae, carnivora) are there in Southern South America?

    Get PDF
Two species of grey foxes are recognized in the Southern Cone of America: Lycalopex griseus, and L. gymnocercus, which were traditionally separated by size and some cranial differences. Morphometric analyses of the skull showed that both species could be the same and that they show clinal variation, while DNA studies based on one mitochondrial marker suggested that they belong to different species. Our objective is to evaluate the systematic status of these foxes using three mitochondrial markers (cytochrome B, cytochrome oxidase I, and control region), and a large sample covering a wide geographic range. The results indicate that there are two clades, that are not sister taxa, a finding that is more congruent with the hypothesis of two species, but their geographic distribution is not coincident with the accepted distribution of L. griseus and L. gymnocercus. Consequently, the distribution of L. griseus is extended eastern including north and center of Argentina, towards the west and south of the Paraná, Paraguay and Río de la Plata rivers. On the other hand, the clade that probably represents L. gymnocercus is restricted to the east of those rivers, except for a few specimens collected in Santa Fe, close to the Paraná river. However, an analysis of a wider sample using nuclear DNA is needed to confirm the taxonomic identity of these species of grey foxes. Get PDF
The complex study of a number of humic substances was conducted with help of bioassay methods using invertebrates (Daphnia, paramecium, earthworms), terrestrial (wheat seeds) and aquatic plants (elodea, duckweed) and algae (Scenedesmus quadricauda). The ranges of concentrations of humates that have a negative and a stimulating effect on biological objects were identified. The efficiency of biological testing methods to evaluate the effect of humic substances on biological objects is shown

Wild deer (Pudu puda) from Chile harbor a novel ecotype of Anaplasma phagocytophilum

[Background] Deer species play an important role in the enzootic cycles of several Anaplasma species. While in the Northern Hemisphere ticks of genus Ixodes are well recognized vectors of these intracellular bacteria, less is known regarding the biological cycles of Anaplasma spp. in South America.[Methods] Using PCR protocols and Sanger sequencing, we assessed the presence of Anaplasma spp. in blood and ticks collected on a native deer species (Pudu puda) from southern Chile.[Results] Based on phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA, gltA and groEL genes and calculation of average sequence divergence for groEL, our results bring to light a novel genovariant of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (named strain “Patagonia”). The strain represents a novel ecotype within the A. phagocytophilum species complex and was detected in both P. puda and their ticks. Using a larger matrix, denser taxon sampling and outgroup, our maximum-likelihood- and Bayesian-inferred phylogenies for groEL provide an accurate picture of the topology of A. phagocytophilum ecotypes and their evolutionary relationships.[Conclusions] This is the first report of an ecotype of A. phagocytophilum in South America. Our results provide novel insight into the genetic diversity and ecology of this complex of bacterial lineages. Further studies should elucidate the enzootic cycle of A. phagocytophilum strain “Patagonia” and assess its pathogenic potential for pudues, domestic animals and humans in the region. This study was funded by the “Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico (FONDECYT)” No. 11220177, and by the ANID BECAS/Scholarship Program/DOCTORADO NACIONAL/2019–21190078 and 2020–21200182.
