    Reading Dickens’s characters: employing psycholinguistic methods to investigate the cognitive reality of patterns in texts

    This article reports the findings of an empirical study that uses eye-tracking and follow-up interviews as methods to investigate how participants read body language clusters in novels by Charles Dickens. The study builds on previous corpus stylistic work that has identified patterns of body language presentation as techniques of characterisation in Dickens (Mahlberg, 2013). The article focuses on the reading of ‘clusters’, that is, repeated sequences of words. It is set in a research context that brings together observations from both corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics on the processing of repeated patterns. The results show that the body language clusters are read significantly faster than the overall sample extracts which suggests that the clusters are stored as units in the brain. This finding is complemented by the results of the follow-up questions which indicate that readers do not seem to refer to the clusters when talking about character information, although they are able to refer to clusters when biased prompts are used to elicit information. Beyond the specific results of the study, this article makes a contribution to the development of complementary methods in literary stylistics and it points to directions for further subclassifications of clusters that could not be achieved on the basis of corpus data alone

    A comparison of atmospheric composition using the Carbon Bond and Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanisms

    We incorporate the recently developed Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism (version 2, RACM2) into the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system for comparison with the existing 2005 Carbon Bond mechanism with updated toluene chemistry (CB05TU). Compared to CB05TU, RACM2 enhances the domain-wide monthly mean hydroxyl radical concentrations by 46% and nitric acid by 26%. However, it reduces hydrogen peroxide by 2%, peroxyacetic acid by 94%, methyl hydrogen peroxide by 19%, peroxyacetyl nitrate by 40%, and organic nitrate by 41%. RACM2 enhances ozone compared to CB05TU at all ambient levels. Although it exhibited greater overestimates at lower observed concentrations, it displayed an improved performance at higher observed concentrations. The RACM2 ozone predictions are also supported by increased ozone production efficiency that agrees better with observations. Compared to CB05TU, RACM2 enhances the domain-wide monthly mean sulfate by 10%, nitrate by 6%, ammonium by 10%, anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols by 42%, biogenic secondary organic aerosols by 5%, and in-cloud secondary organic aerosols by 7%. Increased inorganic and organic aerosols with RACM2 agree better with observed data. Any air pollution control strategies developed using the two mechanisms do not differ appreciably

    A prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study of analgesia and outcome after pneumonectomy

    Background Meta-analysis and systematic reviews of epidural compared with paravertebral blockade analgesia techniques for thoracotomy conclude that although the analgesia is comparable, paravertebral blockade has a better short-term side-effect profile. However, reduction in major complications including mortality has not been proven. Methods The UK pneumonectomy study was a prospective observational cohort study in which all UK thoracic surgical centres were invited to participate. Data presented here relate to the mode of analgesia and outcome. Data were analysed for 312 patients having pneumonectomy at 24 UK thoracic surgical centres in 2005. The primary endpoint was a major complication. Results The most common type of analgesia used was epidural (61.1%) followed by paravertebral infusion (31%). Epidural catheter use was associated with major complications (odds ratio 2.2, 95% confidence interval 1.1–3.8; P=0.02) by stepwise logistic regression analysis. Conclusions An increased incidence of clinically important major post-pneumonectomy complications was associated with thoracic epidural compared with paravertebral blockade analgesia. However, this study is unable to provide robust evidence to change clinical practice for a better clinical outcome. A large multicentre randomized controlled trial is now needed to compare the efficacy, complications, and cost-effectiveness of epidural and paravertebral blockade analgesia after major lung resection with the primary outcome of clinically important major morbidity

    Image Texture Characterization Using the Discrete Orthonormal S-Transform

    We present a new efficient approach for characterizing image texture based on a recently published discrete, orthonormal space-frequency transform known as the DOST. We develop a frequency-domain implementation of the DOST in two dimensions for the case of dyadic frequency sampling. Then, we describe a rapid and efficient approach to obtain local spatial frequency information for an image and show that this information can be used to characterize the horizontal and vertical frequency patterns in synthetic images. Finally, we demonstrate that DOST components can be combined to obtain a rotationally invariant set of texture features that can accurately classify a series of texture patterns. The DOST provides the computational efficiency and multi-scale information of wavelet transforms, while providing texture features in terms of Fourier frequencies. It outperforms leading wavelet-based texture analysis methods

    Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar: System design and initial measurements of large-scale winds and tides

    The Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar (SAAMER) was installed at Rio Grande on Tierra del Fuego (53.8°S, 67.8°W) in May 2008 and has been operational for ∼24 months. This paper describes the motivations for the radar design and its placement at the southern tip of South America, its operating modes and capabilities, and observations of the mean winds, planetary waves, and tides during its first ∼20 months of operation. SAAMER was specifically designed to provide very high resolution of large-scale motions and hopefully enable direct measurements of the vertical momentum flux by gravity waves, which have only been possible previously with dual- or multiple-beam radars and lidars or in situ measurements. SAAMER was placed on Tierra del Fuego because it was a region devoid of similar measurements, the latitude was anticipated to provide high sensitivity to an expected large semidiurnal tide, and the region is now recognized to be a "hot spot" of small-scale gravity wave activity extending from the troposphere into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, perhaps the most dynamically active location on Earth. SAAMER was also intended to permit simultaneous enhanced meteor studies, including "head echo" and "nonspecular" measurements, which were previously possible only with high-power large-aperture radars. Initial measurements have defined the mean circulation and structure, exhibited planetary waves at various periods, and revealed large semidiurnal tide amplitudes and variability, with maximum amplitudes at higher altitudes often exceeding 60 m s-1 and amplitude modulations at periods from a few to ∼30 days.Universidad Nacional De La Plat

    Impact of extreme weather events frequency and intensity in shaping phytoplankton communities

    Lake habitats and communities can often be correlated with general morphometric and geographic characteristics such as depth, latitude, altitude, or watershed area. Further, communities are typically correlated with average environmental conditions such as seasonal temperature and nutrient levels. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events (rain and wind) are typically not encompassed by average environmental descriptors, yet, can modify the physical habitats of lakes, significantly influencing phytoplankton growth and survival. We tested the hypothesis that lakes with a higher frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have a functionally different phytoplankton assemblage from lakes with a lower frequency of extreme weather events. We compiled long-term (mean = 20±13 years, range 0.6-44 years) phytoplankton datasets for 22 lakes across a wide gradient of altitude, latitude, depth, and trophic state. We classified the phytoplankton genera into morpho-functional groups and C-S-R strategists, and compared among lake phytoplankton assemblages’ characteristics across the gradient of wind and rain conditions experienced by the lakes. We discuss how the frequency of extreme weather events can affect phytoplankton functional groups, the dominance of differing life history strategies and ultimately community structure. The frequency and intensity of extreme events is expected to increase with climate change, with the potential to drive shifts in phytoplankton composition

    Attributing minds to vampires in Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend

    For Palmer (2004, 2010), and other proponents of a cognitive narratology, research into real-world minds in the cognitive sciences provides insights into readers’ experiences of fictional minds. In this article, I explore the application of such research to the minds constructed for the vampire characters in Richard Matheson’s (1954) science fiction/horror novel I Am Legend. I draw upon empirical research into ‘mind attribution’ in social psychology, and apply Cognitive Grammar (Langacker, 2008), and its notion of ‘construal’, as a framework for the application of such findings to narrative. In my analysis, I suggest that readers’ attribution of mental-states to the vampires in Matheson’s novel is strategically limited through a number of choices in their linguistic construal. Drawing on online reader responses to the novel, I argue that readers’ understanding of these other minds plays an important role in their empathetic experience and their ethical judgement of the novel’s main character and focaliser, Robert Neville. Finally, I suggest that the limited mind attribution for the vampires invited through their construal contributes to the presentation of a ‘mind style’ (Fowler, 1977) for this character
