Purpose: In Scotland, care homes provide assisted living and medical services. Psychotropic medications (antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and hypnotics) may be over utilized in these facilities. This study compared psychotropic medication utilization in elderly care home residents to the equivalent population of non-care home residents. It is hypothesized that patients in care homes utilize psychotropic medications more than non-care home residents. Methods: Demographic and prescription information for all patients aged 65 years and older on January 1, 2011 who received at least one prescription for a psychotropic medication during 2011 was retrieved from the national Prescribing Information System (PIS). Patients were grouped into care home and non-care home populations and were stratified by gender and 10-year age band. Estimates of the total non-care home and care home populations were made using National Records of Scotland information and, using PIS, by counting all individuals resident in a care home who had received at least one prescription of any type during 2011. Relative risk of receiving psychotropics, percent of population treated, and other utilization measures were calculated. Statistical significance was determined by p\u3c 0.05 utilizing a paired two-sample t-test. Results: A total of 879,492 patients were included, 32,372 of whom resided in care homes (3.7%). Males comprised 28% and 43% of the care home and non-care home populations, respectively. Age groups 65-74, 75-84, and 85+ made up 12%, 35%, and 53% of the care home population, respectively, while making up 55%, 34%, and 11% of the non-care home population, respectively. More care home patients were treated with psychotropics than non-care home patients (41.6% vs. 12.1%, p Conclusion: Residents of care homes have increased use of psychotropic medications compared to individuals not in care homes. There are significant differences in the use of psychotropic medications based on gender and age. Whether this reflects appropriate prescribing warrants further investigation

The Present Evil Age : The Origin and Persistence of Evil in Galatians

This dissertation investigates the origin and persistence of evil in Galatians within the context of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity. The focus of investigation is narrative explanation(s) for evil. What story and/or stories were told to explain the original cause of evil and why it persists in the present? The study begins with a history of research that separates current scholarly accounts of Paul’s view of evil into two broad categories, Adamic template and Christological novum. According to the Adamic template, evil originates in Adam’s sin and persists in human rebellion in the likeness of the Protoplast. According to the Christological novum, Paul’s view of evil is merely a reflex of his Christology. My research challenges both categories.I make four claims about evil in Paul, Second Temple Judaism, and early Christianity. First, Paul’s argument in Galatians, especially Gal 3:19–4:11, is informed by Enochic tradition (chapters two and five). In Galatians Paul’s view of evil is based on the Enochic narrative of rebellious angels. Second, among first century Jews, Adamic and Enochic traditions were not separated as inherently incompatible narrative explanations of evil (chapter three). Jewish authors commonly cited multiple traditions to articulate their theology of evil, producing a mixed template. Third, the function of Adamic and Enochic traditions are determined by the contexts in which they appear (chapters three and four). Adamic tradition, for example, does not indicate that evil is an essentially human problem from start to finish that absolves God (chapter three). Likewise, Enochic tradition does not blame superhuman forces for evil and abdicate human responsibility (chapter four). These traditions do not conform to strict patterns of meaning in the ways that modern scholarship often assumes. Fourth, an Enochic reading of Galatians 3:19–4:11 is supported by the early reception of Paul (chapter six). Among second century Christian apologists, especially Justin Martyr, Paul’s arguments in Galatians are redeployed and explicitly combined with an Enochic narrative

The Search for Metabolic Variants in Response to Climate Change in the American Pika

    Get PDF
Climate change and rising temperatures pose a serious threat to the long-term survival of American pika (Ochotana princeps), emphasizing the interest in the adaptive capability of the pika. This project queried single nucleotide polymorphisms in a population of American pika in Yosemite National Park using Whole Genome Sequencing data, with a specific interest in metabolic variants. The sample data included temporally separated cohorts, comparing modern population data to historical data taken before rapid anthropogenic climate change. Statistically significant variants were identified under Approximate Bayesian Computation using a population decline model. Although population statistics indicated little change between the temporal cohorts, five intergenic SNPs were identified located about 20,000 base pairs upstream from DECR1, a gene that plays a key role in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Further work is needed to investigate any link between these SNPs and DECR1

Urban grasslands support threatened water voles

Urbanisation is often linked with habitat loss and a reduction in species richness but some species may be able to adapt to urban environments. Water voles Arvicola amphibius, a rapidly declining species in the UK, have recently been recorded in isolated grassland habitats in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city (human population 1.2 million). The aim of this study was to determine the distribution and habitat characteristics of water vole populations occupying these dry grasslands. Field work was undertaken from March to October 2014 in a 34 km2 study area located 3 km east of the city centre. Field sign transects recorded water vole presence in 21/65 (32%) and 19/62 (31%) surveyed sites in spring and autumn, respectively. Vole occupancy increased with distance from water and was greatest in parkland, followed by sites with rank vegetation and roadside habitats. Occupancy was lower where signs of predators were recorded but surprisingly occupancy was found to be greater in the most disturbed sites, perhaps linked to the fact that many of these sites were public parks containing suitable grassland. Sites occupied by water voles were classed as neutral grasslands with species composition dominated by two main species. The number of grassland sites occupied by water voles, especially within public areas suggests that careful management of these urban grassland habitats will benefit the conservation of this highly threatened species in the UK

Perspective: Performance Art as a Measured Perception

Coining a seventh principle of architecture allowed for the creation of a solo performance based on architecture, performance and artificial intelligence. The future is impacted on what is presented today. The importance of the ever-changing American theatre is that it has the ability to influence and capture an audience. A sensation of existence crafted by feeling and poetry. A product of productivity – Disconnect is themed off of unconventional innovation. The six principles: Axis, Symmetry, Rhythm, Datum, Hierarchy and Transformation were all tools used to develop a script in characterizing the established space. The stage created the script, the script created the movement, and the movement created the art. Lines, balance, space, arrangement, alienation, volume, articulation, importance and manipulation are all concepts that structure the context of the identity created for entertainment. The subject G22 is a featured simulation. A creation of language and design. An element of architecture that allows for the freedom of theatre to interfere. The seventh principle, ‘Perspective,’ is the love child of the other six principles forming to make the presentation of the solo show possible. There are many ways to perceive something and the theatre allows for one to view creativity in a space of acceptance and intellect. What makes good theatre? That was the purpose for disrupting the normativity of the valued art through a staged production

Preparing for the Genomic Age: Thiopurine S-Methytransferase Polymorphism

    Get PDF
Interpatient variability among medication doses has been a long-standing obstacle for many prescribers. Some medications result in increased morbidity and mortality in a small percentage of the population. For many years, the cause of such toxicities was unknown. This mystery has been resolved by the discovery that the abscence or abnormality of specific genes that code for receptros, drug-treated proteins, drug transport mechanisms, and drug metabolizing enzymes could alter how an affected individual will respond to a given drug. One such incidence is the genetic polymorphism in thiopurine s-methytransferase (TPMT). In comprehending the mechanism of this polymorphism, it is important to understand the matabolic pathway of thiopurine drugs. Through study of this pathway, researchers began to look into whether other polymorphisms aside from TPMT could be a source of the dose-related toxicity with the thiopurines. The prospect that this polymorphism may contribute to an increase in number or exacerbation of side effects beyond the commonly presented bone marrow toxicity also has been visited. Becoming more aware of this genetic issue has presented the need to evaluate the cost effectiveness of genetic testing to counteract the expected cost of treating extreme myelosuppression. Having knowledge of new pharmacogenomic technology and the tests available can benefit pharmacists in any setting. Pharmacists will be more prepared to address patient concerns such as necessity and cost effectiveness
