    Eliciting Preferences for Resource Allocation in Health Care

    Willingness-to-pay (WTP) studies are increasingly being used in the evaluation of health care programmes and, although less frequently, for priority setting in health care. The usefulness of willingness-to-pay as a discriminatory tool for priority setting is considered in this paper for three different health care programmes in Ireland: cancer, cardiovascular and community care. While the resulting estimates are consistent with respondents’ rankings of the programmes, there is no statistical difference among the three programmes in terms of WTP. In considering marginal changes to existing health care programmes people consider their rankings of the programmes and the existing capacity of each programme. People are also more concerned with the gains to themselves of expanding various health care programmes than with wider issues of access or fairness.

    Multidimensionality of Entrepreneurial Firm-level Processes: Do the Dimensions Covary?

    Covariance (or not) among the first-order dimensions of firm-level entrepreneurial processes underpins a fundamental and non-trivial difference between the entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial posture constructs. Utilizing a typology developed for multi-dimensional constructs, we operationalized each construct according to its specific conceptualization (relationships among the dimensions) and compared and contrasted each construct in an identical nomological network. Although we found support for both theories, the entrepreneurial orientation construct was more robust in explaining additional variance in growth. Additionally, our findings suggest that the means through which the first-order dimensions are operationalized—latent vs. summates— significantly affect the analysis

    The HdpH DSLs for scalable reliable computation

    The statelessness of functional computations facilitates both parallelism and fault recovery. Faults and non-uniform communication topologies are key challenges for emergent large scale parallel architectures. We report on HdpH and HdpH-RS, a pair of Haskell DSLs designed to address these challenges for irregular task-parallel computations on large distributed-memory architectures. Both DSLs share an API combining explicit task placement with sophisticated work stealing. HdpH focuses on scalability by making placement and stealing topology aware whereas HdpH-RS delivers reliability by means of fault tolerant work stealing. We present operational semantics for both DSLs and investigate conditions for semantic equivalence of HdpH and HdpH-RS programs, that is, conditions under which topology awareness can be transparently traded for fault tolerance. We detail how the DSL implementations realise topology awareness and fault tolerance. We report an initial evaluation of scalability and fault tolerance on a 256-core cluster and on up to 32K cores of an HPC platform

    The Effect of Thermal History on Microstructural Evolution, Cold-Work Refinement and {\alpha}/\b{eta} Growth in Ti-6Al-4V Wire + Arc AM

    Wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) is an attractive method for manufacturing large-scale aerospace components, however the microstructural changes that occur and the effect of interpass rolling are poorly understood. Therefore two fundamental studies were conducted: the first involved temperature measurement of a wrought dummy wall so that the microstructural changes in the heat affected zone (HAZ) could be related to the thermal cycle. This demonstrated that the white band in the microstructure corresponded to 825 C well below the beta-transus temperature and above this boundary the bi-modal substrate material was converted to lamellar. The second involved peening WAAM material along the side of a deposited wall before applying a typical WAAM thermal heat treatment. This showed that refinement occurred up to the first layer band in the microstructure and the smallest grains were observed just above this boundary at higher temperatures significant grain growth occurred. This study has provided the foundational understanding of microstructural changes that will facilitate future process developments.Comment: 15 Figures, 25 pages, Journal publicatio

    Towards Generic Scalable Parallel Combinatorial Search

    Combinatorial search problems in mathematics, e.g. in finite geometry, are notoriously hard; a state-of-the-art backtracking search algorithm can easily take months to solve a single problem. There is clearly demand for parallel combinatorial search algorithms scaling to hundreds of cores and beyond. However, backtracking combinatorial searches are challenging to parallelise due to their sensitivity to search order and due to the their irregularly shaped search trees. Moreover, scaling parallel search to hundreds of cores generally requires highly specialist parallel programming expertise. This paper proposes a generic scalable framework for solving hard combinatorial problems. Key elements are distributed memory task parallelism (to achieve scale), work stealing (to cope with irregularity), and generic algorithmic skeletons for combinatorial search (to reduce the parallelism expertise required). We outline two implementations: a mature Haskell Tree Search Library (HTSL) based around algorithmic skeletons and a prototype C++ Tree Search Library (CTSL) that uses hand coded applications. Experiments on maximum clique problems and on a problem in finite geometry, the search for spreads in H(4,2^2), show that (1) CTSL consistently outperforms HTSL on sequential runs, and (2) both libraries scale to 200 cores, e.g. speeding up spreads search by a factor of 81 (HTSL) and 60 (CTSL), respectively. This demonstrates the potential of our generic framework for scaling parallel combinatorial search to large distributed memory platforms

    2D:4D digit ratio and religiosity in university student and general population samples

    The ratio of index to ring finger length (2D:4D) is used as a proxy for prenatal sex hormone exposure. It has been hypothesised to correlate with religiosity, though no published research has explored this possibility. Here, we initially examined 2D:4D in relation to self-reported religious affiliation and questionnaire measures of general religiosity, spirituality, religious fundamentalism, and religious commitment in male (N = 106) and female (N = 105) university students (Study 1). Although no significant correlations were observed between 2D:4D and the questionnaire measures, females who affiliated with organised religions had higher right and left hand digit ratios compared to agnostic or atheist females. Study 2 attempted to replicate these findings in an adult general population sample (N = 172 males, N = 257 females), but did not observe significant effects in either sex. Overall, these findings suggest that high 2D:4D may be relatively-specifically associated with increased religious affiliation in young, highly-educated, females.This work was supported by a Student Research Grant from the European Human Behaviour and Evolution Association (EHBEA), and an Experimental Psychology Society (EPS) Grindley Grant awarded to GR.     From commitment to control : a labour process study of workers' experiences of the transition from clerical to call centre work at British Gas

    Despite their continuing importance to the UK economy and their employment of significant numbers of workers from a range of professions, the utilities have received scant attention from critical scholars of work. This neglect represents a missed opportunity to examine the impact of nearly twenty years of privatisation and marketisation on workers, their jobs and their unions. This thesis aims to make a contribution to knowledge here by investigating, contextualising and explaining changes in the labour processes of a privatised utility in the United Kingdom. The research is informed by oral history methods and techniques, rarely adopted in industrial sociology, and here used alongside labour process theory to reconstruct past experiences of work. Drawing on qualitative data sets, from in-depth interviews with a cohort of employees who worked continuously over three decades at the research site, British Gas’s Granton House, and on extensive company and trade union documentary evidence the research demonstrates how British Gas responded to restrictive regulation and the need to deliver shareholder value by transforming pre-existing forms of work organisation through introducing call centres. The call centre provided the opportunity for management to regain control over the labour process, intensify work and reduce costs. In doing so, the study identifies the principal drivers of organisational change, documents the process of change evaluates the impact on workers’ experience. Thus, as a corrective to much recent labour process theory the research offers both an ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ account of change over an extended time. The contrast between workers’ experience of working in the clerical departments and in the call centre could not be starker. Almost every element of work from which workers derived satisfaction and purpose was abruptly dismantled. In their place workers had to endure the restrictive and controlling nature of call centre work. The relative absence of resistance to such a transformation is shown to be a consequence of failures in collective organisation, rather than the totalisation of managerial control, as the postmodernists and Foucauldians would have it.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
