The Kenya rangeland ecological monitoring unit
The author has identified the following significant results. Methodology for aerial surveys and ground truth studies was developed, tested, and revised several times to produce reasonably firm methods of procedure. Computer programs were adapted or developed to analyze, store, and recall data from the ground and air monitoring surveys
Accretion Disk Temperatures of QSOs: Constraints from the Emission Lines
QSO emission-line spectra are compared to predictions based on theoretical
ionizing continua of accretion disks. Observed line intensities do not show the
expected trend of higher ionization with higher accretion disk temperature as
derived from the black hole mass and accretion rate. This suggests that, at
least for accretion rates close to the Eddington limit, the inner disk does not
reach temperatures as high as expected from standard disk theory. Modified
radial temperature profiles, taking account of winds or advection in the inner
disk, achieve better agreement with observation. This conclusion agrees with an
earlier study of QSO continuum colors as a function of disk temperature. The
emission lines of radio-detected and radio-undetected sources show different
trends as a function of disk temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Ap

Orbital-quenching-induced magnetism in Ba_2NaOsO_6
The double perovskite \bnoo with heptavalent Os () is observed to remain
in the ideal cubic structure ({\it i.e.} without orbital ordering) despite
single occupation of the orbitals, even in the ferromagnetically
ordered phase below 6.8 K. Analysis based on the {\it ab initio} dispersion
expressed in terms of an Os -based Wannier function picture, spin-orbit
coupling, Hund's coupling, and strong Coulomb repulsion shows that the magnetic
OsO cluster is near a moment-less condition due to spin and orbital
compensation. Quenching (hybridization) then drives the emergence of the small
moment. This compensation, unprecedented in transition metals, arises in a
unified picture that accounts for the observed Mott insulating behavior.Comment: in press at Europhysics Letter
Achieving change in the NHS: a feasibility study to introduce a home-based cancer chemotherapy service
A major focus of current health policyin the United Kingdom is the development of services that meet the publicās expectations. To achieve this there is a need to evaluate current provision to ensure that the best use is made of finite resources. The studyreported here adopted an interview approach to examine an existing outpatient chemotherapy service, and to consider the feasibilityof introducing a home based model. Following a review of literature on this topic data were obtained from in-depth interviews with patients and professionals regarding the present service. These were then combined with an analysis of service contracts and financial estimates. The poor quality of much of the costrelated information limited the conclusions which could be drawn, and emphasised the need for access to more accessible and robust financial information upon which to base change. The studyalso illustrated the benefits of feasibility studies; especially when cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction are the driving forces behind proposed
changes to clinical services
Public and Private Forms of Opportunism within the Organization: A Joint Examination of Budget and Effort Behavior
We assert that some forms of opportunistic behavior within the organization are relatively transparent and, therefore, public in nature. Further , while organizations can tightly control such public opportunism, it may not be optimal for them to do so in the presence of private opportunism. To study how public and private forms of opportunism differ and interact, we jointly examine budget and effort behavior in a participative budgeting experiment. We group participants into producer /manager pairs and set the parameters such that the producer extracts the largest share of surplus from the manager by publicly setting the budget at zero and privately providing low effort. When the producer unilaterally sets the budget, the public opportunism of budgetary slack is higher and more affected by learning than the private opportunism of low effort. Giving the manager the power to reject the budget not only reduces budgetary slack by about 50 percent, but also generates reciprocity expectations and behavior. In particular, managers who allow more budgetary slack expect and receive higher effort from their producers on average. This reciprocity increases organizational performance by increasing the expected pay of the manager without decreasing the expected pay of the producer
Differences in both prevalence and titre of specific immunoglobulin E among children with asthma in affluent and poor communities within a large town in Ghana.
Background Reports from several African countries have noted an increasing prevalence of asthma in areas of extensive urbanization. Objective To investigate the relevance of allergen-specific sensitization and body mass index (BMI) to asthma/wheezing and exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) among children from affluent and poorer communities within a large town in Ghana. Methods Children with physician-diagnosed asthma and/or current wheezing aged 9-16 years (n=99; cases) from three schools with differing socio-economic backgrounds [urban affluent (UA), urban poor (UP) or suburban/rural (SR)] were recruited from a cross-sectional study (n=1848) in Kumasi, Ghana, and matched according to age, sex and area of residence with non-asthmatic/non-wheezy controls. We assayed sera for IgE antibodies to mite, cat, dog, cockroach, Ascaris and galactose-Ī±-1,3-galactose. Results Children from the UA school had the lowest total serum IgE. However, cases from the UA school had a higher prevalence and mean titre of sIgE to mite (71.4%, 21.2IU/mL) when compared with controls (14.3%, 0.8IU/mL) or cases from UP (30%, 0.8IU/mL) and SR community (47.8%, 1.6IU/mL). While similar findings were observed with EIB in the whole population, among cases there was no difference in IgE antibody prevalence or titre between children with or without EIB. BMI was higher among UA children with and without asthma; in UP and SR communities, children with EIB (n=14) had a significantly higher BMI compared with children with asthma/wheezing without EIB (n=38) (18.2 vs. 16.4, respectively, P<0.01). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance In the relatively affluent school, asthma/wheezing and EIB were associated with high titre IgE antibodies to mite, decreased total IgE, and increased BMI. This contrasted with children in the urban poor school and suggests that changes relevant to a Western model of childhood asthma can occur within a short geographical distance within a large city in Africa.
