Probing the wind-wind collision in Gamma Velorum with high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectroscopy: evidence for sudden radiative braking and non-equilibrium ionization
We present a new analysis of an archived Chandra HETGS X-ray spectrum of the
WR+O colliding wind binary Gamma Velorum. The spectrum is dominated by emission
lines from astrophysically abundant elements: Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe. From a
combination of broad-band spectral analysis and an analysis of line flux ratios
we infer a wide range of temperatures in the X-ray emitting plasma (~4-40 MK).
As in the previously published analysis, we find the X-ray emission lines are
essentially unshifted, with a mean FWHM of 1240 +/- 30 km/s. Calculations of
line profiles based on hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision
predict lines that are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The lack of any
observed shift in the lines may be evidence of a large shock-cone opening
half-angle (> 85 degrees), and we suggest this may be evidence of sudden
radiative braking. From the R and G ratios measured from He-like
forbidden-intercombination-resonance triplets we find evidence that the Mg XI
emission originates from hotter gas closer to the O star than the Si XIII
emission, which suggests that non-equilibrium ionization may be present.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Optimal Prandtl number for heat transfer in rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection
Numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Prandtl (Pr) and
Rossby (Ro) numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are
presented for Rayleigh number Ra = 10^8. When Ro is fixed the heat transfer
enhancement with respect to the non-rotating value shows a maximum as function
of Pr. This maximum is due to the reduced efficiency of Ekman pumping when Pr
becomes too small or too large. When Pr becomes small, i.e. for large thermal
diffusivity, the heat that is carried by the vertical vortices spreads out in
the middle of the cell, and Ekman pumping thus becomes less efficient. For
higher Pr the thermal boundary layers (BLs) are thinner than the kinetic BLs
and therefore the Ekman vortices do not reach the thermal BL. This means that
the fluid that is sucked into the vertical vortices is colder than for lower Pr
which limits the efficiency of the upwards heat transfer.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Impacts of Forage Cropping Decisions on Feed-Flows in Cool- Temperate Grazing Systems
Intensive cool-temperate grasslands often rely on adding forage crops to help supply feed when pasture growth is limited by cool temperatures and low sunlight. We tested the impacts of using single- or multi-graze crops to alter feed supply in either summer/autumn or winter on productivity in red deer farming systems in a cool-temperate environment. The choice of single-graze or multi-graze crops to provide forage in deer grazing systems had an impact on the feed flows and the amount of pasture available, with multi-graze crops supplying more feed during the dry summer months while single-graze crops supplying more feed during the cool winter months. The limited growth rates of young red deer, and the late calving of hinds meant that pasture covers could be low during the late winter and early spring without compromising animal production. Overall, the use of a multi-graze crop, especially when used early in autumn to promote weaner liveweight gain, increased overall productivity by 5% and increased feed conversion efficiency by 2.5% in the venison production system
Spatiotemporal patterns and agro-ecological risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama Rot) in dogs in the UK
Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease

Statistics of the largest geomagnetic storms per solar cycle (1844-1993)
International audienceA previous application of extreme-value statistics to the first, second and third largest geomagnetic storms per solar cycle for nine solar cycles is extended to fourteen solar cycles (1844?1993). The intensity of a geomagnetic storm is measured by the magnitude of the daily aa index, rather than the half-daily aa index used previously. Values of the conventional aa index (1868?1993), supplemented by the Helsinki Ak index (1844?1880), provide an almost continuous, and largely homogeneous, daily measure of geomagnetic activity over an interval of 150 years. As in the earlier investigation, analytic expressions giving the probabilities of the three greatest storms (extreme values) per solar cycle, as continuous functions of storm magnitude (aa), are obtained by least-squares fitting of the observations to the appropriate theoretical extreme-value probability functions. These expressions are used to obtain the statistical characteristics of the extreme values; namely, the mode, median, mean, standard deviation and relative dispersion. Since the Ak index may not provide an entirely homogeneous extension of the aa index, the statistical analysis is performed separately for twelve solar cycles (1868?1993), as well as nine solar cycles (1868?1967). The results are utilized to determine the expected ranges of the extreme values as a function of the number of solar cycles. For fourteen solar cycles, the expected ranges of the daily aa index for the first, second and third largest geomagnetic storms per solar cycle decrease monotonically in magnitude, contrary to the situation for the half-daily aa index over nine solar cycles. The observed range of the first extreme daily aa index for fourteen solar cycles is 159?352 nT and for twelve solar cycles is 215?352 nT. In a group of 100 solar cycles the expected ranges are expanded to 137?539 and 177?511 nT, which represent increases of 108% and 144% in the respective ranges. Thus there is at least a 99% probability that the daily aa index will satisfy the condition aa < 550 for the largest geomagnetic storm in the next 100 solar cycles. The statistical analysis is used to infer that remarkable conjugate auroral observations on the night of 16 September 1770, which were recorded during the first voyage of Captain Cook to Australia, occurred during an intense geomagnetic storm
The nature of GRB-selected submillimeter galaxies: hot and young
We present detailed fits of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of four
submillimeter (submm) galaxies selected by the presence of a gamma-ray burst
(GRB) event (GRBs 980703, 000210, 000418 and 010222). These faint ~3 mJy submm
emitters at redshift ~1 are characterized by an unusual combination of long-
and short-wavelength properties, namely enhanced submm and/or radio emission
combined with optical faintness and blue colors. We exclude an active galactic
nucleus as the source of long-wavelength emission. From the SED fits we
conclude that the four galaxies are young (ages <2 Gyr), highly starforming
(star formation rates ~150 MSun/yr), low-mass (stellar masses ~10^10 MSun) and
dusty (dust masses ~3x10^8 MSun). Their high dust temperatures (Td>45 K)
indicate that GRB host galaxies are hotter, younger, and less massive
counterparts to submm-selected galaxies detected so far. Future facilities like
Herschel, JCMT/SCUBA-2 and ALMA will test this hypothesis enabling measurement

The effects of minimal tillage, contour cultivation and in-field vegetative barriers on soil erosion and phosphorus loss.
Runoff, sediment, total phosphorus and total dissolved phosphorus losses in overland flow were measured for two years on unbounded plots cropped with wheat and oats. Half of the field was cultivated with minimum tillage (shallow tillage with a tine cultivator) and half was conventionally ploughed. Within each cultivation treatment there were different treatment areas (TA). In the first year of the experiment, one TA was cultivated up and down the slope, one TA was cultivated on the contour, with a beetle bank acting as a vegetative barrier partway up the slope, and one had a mixed direction cultivation treatment, with cultivation and drilling conducted up and down the slope and all subsequent operations conducted on the contour. In the second year, this mixed treatment was replaced with contour cultivation. Results showed no significant reduction in runoff, sediment losses or total phosphorus losses from minimum tillage when compared to the conventional plough treatment, but there were increased losses of total dissolved phosphorus with minimum tillage. The mixed direction cultivation treatment increased surface runoff and losses of sediment and phosphorus. Increasing surface roughness with contour cultivation reduced surface runoff compared to up and down slope cultivation in both the plough and minimum tillage treatment areas, but this trend was not significant. Sediment and phosphorus losses in the contour cultivation treatment followed a very similar pattern to runoff. Combining contour cultivation with a vegetative barrier in the form of a beetle bank to reduce slope length resulted in a non-significant reduction in surface runoff, sediment and total phosphorus when compared to up and down-slope cultivation, but there was a clear trend towards reduced losses. However, the addition of a beetle bank did not provide a significant reduction in runoff, sediment losses or total phosphorus losses when compared to contour cultivation, suggesting only a marginal additional benefit. The economic implications for farmers of the different treatment options are investigated in order to assess their suitability for implementation at a field scale
