Bread, Politics and Political Economy in the Reign of Louis XV
A new edition of Kaplanâs landmark study on eighteenth-century French political economy, reissued with a new Foreword by Sophus A. Reinert. Based on research in all the Parisian depots and more than fifty departmental archives and specialized and municipal libraries, Kaplanâs classic work constitutes a major contribution to the study of the subsistence problem before the French Revolution and the political economy of deregulatory reform. Anthem Press is proud to reissued this pathbreaking work together with a significant new historiographic companion volume by the author, âThe Stakes of Regulation: Perspectives on âBread, Politics and Political Economyâ Forty Years Later.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome
To discuss challenges concerning treatment for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) and review complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies being evaluated for this condition, we performed a comprehensive search of articles published from 1990â2005 using the PubMed, Medline databases. Data from the articles were abstracted and pooled by subject. Keywords cross-searched with CP/CPPS included: complementary, alternative, integrative, therapies, interventions, nutrition, antioxidants, herbs, supplements, biofeedback and acupuncture. Listed articles with no abstracts were not included. Various CAM therapies for CP/CPPS exist including biofeedback, acupuncture, hyperthermia and electrostimulation. Additionally, a variety of in vitro and in vivo studies testing herbal and nutritional supplements were found. Saw palmetto, cernilton and quercetin were the most frequently tested supplements for CP/CPPS. Although many CAM therapies demonstrate positive preliminary observations as prospective treatments for CP/CPPS, further exploratory studies including more randomized, controlled trials are necessary for significant validation as treatment options for this complex disorder
Outcomes from a single-intervention trial to improve interprofessional practice behaviors at a student-led free clinic
Background
Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is the practice of two or more healthcare professionals working together and learning from one another to improve health outcomes. IPC is important for quality training, typically improving individual and group level outcomes. Students value the opportunity for leadership and teamwork development when IPC is offered in their curriculum. The Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic (IUSOC) is a student run clinic that provides free primary care services to underserved residents residing in Indianapolis, Indiana. The IUSOC partner leaders identified a need to enhance knowledge about partner roles, scope of practice, and professional training with the hopes of improving quality of care through IPC and utilization of clinic resources.
Methods
A cluster randomized design consisted of education session days and control days. Participants had an equal selection probability. Student partners from ten different disciplines were involved. Two survey instruments were used for data collection: 1) The Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale and 2) The Professional Consciousness Raising Questionnaire. The former measured the attitudes and beliefs that underlie interprofessional socialization, while the latter assessed pre/post student knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of each partner.
Results
The control arm of the study was composed of 167 student participants and the intervention arm had 170 participants. Participants in the intervention arm had greater scores for âability to work with othersâ, âvalue in working with othersâ, and âcomfort in working with others.â The intervention arm also had significantly increased odds of correctly identifying the roles responsibilities of the nursing, law, dental, and global health disciplines.
Conclusions
Results of this study demonstrate that administering a short interprofessional education exercise to healthcare professional students leads to improved IPC through increased interprofessional knowledge about other professions and change in beliefs and values toward the value of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals
A Clinical Exploration of Value Creation and Destruction in Acquisitions: Organizational Design, Incentives, and Internal Capital Markets
This paper presents clinically-based studies of two acquisitions that received very different stock market reactions at announcement one positive and one negative. Despite the differing market reactions, we find that ultimately neither acquisition created value overall. In exploring the reasons for the acquisition outcomes, we rely primarily on interviews with managers and on internally generated performance data. We compare the results of these analyses to those from analyses of post-acquisition operating and stock price performance traditionally applied to large samples. We draw two primary conclusions. (1) Our findings highlight the difficulty of implementing a successful acquisition strategy and of running an effective internal capital market. Post-acquisition difficulties resulted because: (a) managers of the" acquiring company did not deeply understand the target company at the time of the acquisition; (b) the acquirer imposed an inappropriate organizational design on the target as part of the post-acquisition integration process; and (c) inappropriate management incentives existed at both the top management and division levels. (2) Measures of operating performance used in large sample studies are weakly correlated with actual post-acquisition operating performance."
Improved Techniques for the Surveillance of the Near Earth Space Environment with the Murchison Widefield Array
In this paper we demonstrate improved techniques to extend coherent
processing intervals for passive radar processing, with the Murchison Widefield
Array. Specifically, we apply a two stage linear range and Doppler migration
compensation by utilising Keystone Formatting and a recent dechirping method.
These methods are used to further demonstrate the potential for the
surveillance of space with the Murchison Widefield Array using passive radar,
by detecting objects orders of magnitude smaller than previous work. This paper
also demonstrates how the linear Doppler migration methods can be extended to
higher order compensation to further increase potential processing intervals.Comment: Presented at the 2019 IEEE Radar Conference in Boston earlier this

Chaos in Quantum Dots: Dynamical Modulation of Coulomb Blockade Peak Heights
The electrostatic energy of an additional electron on a conducting grain
blocks the flow of current through the grain, an effect known as the Coulomb
blockade. Current can flow only if two charge states of the grain have the same
energy; in this case the conductance has a peak. In a small grain with
quantized electron states, referred to as a quantum dot, the magnitude of the
conductance peak is directly related to the magnitude of the wavefunction near
the contacts to the dot. Since dots are generally irregular in shape, the
dynamics of the electrons is chaotic, and the characteristics of Coulomb
blockade peaks reflects those of wavefunctions in chaotic systems. Previously,
a statistical theory for the peaks was derived by assuming these wavefunctions
to be completely random. Here we show that the specific internal dynamics of
the dot, even though it is chaotic, modulates the peaks: because all systems
have short-time features, chaos is not equivalent to randomness. Semiclassical
results are derived for both chaotic and integrable dots, which are
surprisingly similar, and compared to numerical calculations. We argue that
this modulation, though unappreciated, has already been seen in experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figs included (2 color), uses epsf.st
Semiclassical Theory of Coulomb Blockade Peak Heights in Chaotic Quantum Dots
We develop a semiclassical theory of Coulomb blockade peak heights in chaotic
quantum dots. Using Berry's conjecture, we calculate the peak height
distributions and the correlation functions. We demonstrate that the
corrections to the corresponding results of the standard statistical theory are
non-universal and can be expressed in terms of the classical periodic orbits of
the dot that are well coupled to the leads. The main effect is an oscillatory
dependence of the peak heights on any parameter which is varied; it is
substantial for both symmetric and asymmetric lead placement. Surprisingly,
these dynamical effects do not influence the full distribution of peak heights,
but are clearly seen in the correlation function or power spectrum. For
non-zero temperature, the correlation function obtained theoretically is in
good agreement with that measured experimentally.Comment: 5 color eps figure
