Perceived Athletic and Academic Stressors and Time Management of Student-Athletes

    Get PDF
A typical National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I affiliated member institution provides support to at least seven men’s and women’s sports that sustains over 300 student-athletes. These student-athletes perform both on and off the court on a daily basis while completing their homework and studying for tests just like non-athlete students. Furthermore, they participate in practices, compete in games, lift weights, attend team meetings, and manage injuries. Although faculty members are aware of the demands placed on college athletes, it’s unclear if they understand the magnitude of the challenges and pressure college athletes have experienced outside of the classroom

Re-examination of the Reformation in its context of political and theological struggles

With the celebration of the 500 years of Reformation in 2017, unsurprisingly, much has been written about this phenomenon as it unfolded in the 16th-century Europe. Any world-changing event not only deserves the attention of historians and scholars alike, but also merits closer scrutiny, to reveal its important lessons. One of the ways in which to achieve this goal, is the search to understand the event in context. While religious contexts are often discussed within the framework of the 16th-century Reformation, the political contexts have not been sufficiently elucidated to uncover their impact on the theological stances of early reformers. In this study, a re-examination of the early Reformers will reveal that their political contexts greatly affected the outcomes of their theological struggles, mostly causing those Magisterial Reformers who accommodated and collaborated symbiotically with their political partners, to thrive. In short, ideology without ample political muscle has invariably been relegated to the footnotes of history, whereas theology, supported by political patronage, has come to define Reformation historiography. This finding is important in the ongoing ecumenical conversation, as far as all sides have realised that their confessional foundations are perhaps products of their historico-political contexts, thereby removing any entrenched personal grandiosity, to make room for pragmatic humility as part of a constructive dialogue. Through the use of Document Analysis, this study aims to investigate various early Reformers and their political contexts, to determine how the latter swayed the theological leanings of the former. These political contexts include the influence of localised princes, city magistrates, and even peasants, as well as the broader contexts of geopolitical events. A large volume of relevant literature will be used and analysed to ascertain the historical accuracy of accounts surrounding political events, as well as individual Reformers’ theological tenets. Primary sources will be given priority, while secondary sources will be carefully evaluated. Ka ge go be go ketekwa mengwaga ye 500 ya Diphetogo ka 2017, seo se ilego sa se makatse ke gore, tse ntsi di ngwadilwe mabapi le tiragalo ye ge e be e thomiswa ka ngwagakgolo wa bo 16 ka Yuropa. Mutagenesis of the fusion peptide-like domain of hepatitis C virus E1 glycoprotein: involvement in cell fusion and virus entry

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Envelope (E) glycoprotein E2 of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) mediates binding of the virus to target cell receptors. Nevertheless, the precise role of E1 in viral entry remains elusive.

Methods

To understand the involvement of the fusion peptide-like domain positioned at residues 264 to 290 within envelope glycoprotein E1 in HCV infection, mutants with Ala and Asn substitutions for residues conserved between HCV and E proteins of flaviviruses or the fusion proteins of paramyxoviruses were constructed by site-directed mutagenesis and their effects on membrane fusion and viral infectivity were examined.

Results

None of these mutations affected the synthesis or cell surface expression of envelope proteins, nor did they alter the formation of a non-covalent E1-E2 heterodimer or E2 binding to the large extracellular loop of CD81. The Cys residues located at positions 272 and 281 were unlikely involved in intra- or intermolecular disulfide bond formation. With the exception of the G267A mutant, which showed increased cell fusion, other mutants displayed reduced or marginally inhibited cell fusion capacities compared to the wild-type (WT) E1E2. The G267A mutant was also an exception in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)/HCV E1E2 pseudotyping analyses, in that it showed higher one-cycle infectivity; all other mutants exhibited greatly or partially reduced viral entry versus the WT pseudotype. All but the G278A and D279N mutants showed a WT-like profile of E1E2 incorporation into HIV-1 particles. Since C272A, C281A, G282A, and G288A pseudotypes bound to Huh7 cells as effectively as did the WT pseudotype, the reduced infectivity of these pseudotypes was due to their ability to inhibit cell fusion.

Conclusion

Our results indicate that specific residues, but not the structure, of this fusion peptide-like domain are required for mediating cell fusion and viral entry.</p

This paper investigates various SAR digital filtering techniques to remove speckles for image classification using fused SAR and SPOT XS image. The fused image classification is then compared with the classified SPOT XS image. The result has shown that the use of the Enhanced Frost digital filtering technique for SAR image and the fusion with SPOT XS gives a very similar classification with comparison to the SPOT XS image classification.</p

Noise Compensation for Subspace Gaussian Mixture Models.

    Get PDF
Joint uncertainty decoding (JUD) is an effective model-based noise compensation technique for conventional Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based speech recognition systems. In this paper, we apply JUD to subspace Gaussian mixture model (SGMM) based acoustic models. The total number of Gaussians in the SGMM acoustic model is usually much larger than for conventional GMMs, which limits the application of approaches which explicitly compensate each Gaussian, such as vector Taylor series (VTS). However, by clustering the Gaussian components into a number of regression classes, JUD-based noise compensation can be successfully applied to SGMM systems. We evaluate the JUD/SGMM technique using the Aurora 4 corpus, and the experimental results indicated that it is more accurate than conventional GMM-based systems using either VTS or JUD noise compensation. 1

Long-term microcarrier suspension cultures of human embryonic stem cells

    Get PDF
AbstractThe conventional method of culturing human embryonic stem cells (hESC) is on two-dimensional (2D) surfaces, which is not amenable for scale up to therapeutic quantities in bioreactors. We have developed a facile and robust method for maintaining undifferentiated hESC in three-dimensional (3D) suspension cultures on matrigel-coated microcarriers achieving 2- to 4-fold higher cell densities than those in 2D colony cultures. Stable, continuous propagation of two hESC lines on microcarriers has been demonstrated in conditioned media for 6 months. Microcarrier cultures (MC) were also demonstrated in two serum-free defined media (StemPro and mTeSR1). MC achieved even higher cell concentrations in suspension spinner flasks, thus opening the prospect of propagation in controlled bioreactors

The Stillwater Triple Hybrid Power Plant: Integrating Geothermal, Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Power Generation

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT The Stillwater geothermal project is located in Nevada, USA, and is owned and operated by Enel Green Power North America, Inc. (EGP-NA). The first phase of the project began with a geothermal plant, a 33 MW gross binary plant which was commissioned in 2009. A desire to increase output led EGP to add 26 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) power to the project in 2012. The solar PV project size was tailored to complement the geothermal plant output degradation during hot summer temperatures. In 2013, design began on an additional solar project using Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) thermal technology. The augmentation project relies on linear parabolic trough systems to add energy to the incoming geothermal fluid, which allows the binary plant to increase output. The project consists of collectors, a heat exchanger, a circulating pump and a control system integrated with the geothermal plant. The solar field adds about 17 megawatts of thermal energy, and is estimated to add an equivalent of up to 2 megawatts of boost in power generation to the geothermal power plant. The following paper presents the Stillwater resource park as a prime case study for the benefits of collecting multiple renewable energy generation types, which harness multiple resources, such as existing infrastructure, transmission capability and human capital. It serves as a template for similar projects blessed with comparable resources. Performance contributions of the geothermal, solar PV and solar thermal aspects are presented, with commentary on operations and lessons learned for the integrated unit. Stillwater was the first geothermal power plant to be paired with solar photovoltaic generation and is also the first to be coupled with concentrating solar power field on a major utility scale. When completed, it will be the first power plant to incorporate the three renewable technologies
