    Characterization of a New Zinc Fixed-Point Cell for ITS-90 Realization

    A new zinc fixed-point cell for the dissemination of International Temperature Scale (ITS-90) was realized at the Italian National Metrological Institute (Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica, INRiM). This paper presents the results of its characterization, including fabrication details. In particular, immersion effects and influences of impurities on the freezing point of zinc were studied. The new open-type cell was prepared using a high purity sample, chemically analyzed, and the depression of the fixed-point temperature was calculated using the method of Sum of Individual Estimates (SIE). The new cell presents a smaller freezing point depression compared with the national reference for which the Overall Maximum Estimate (OME) method was applied. This behavior was confirmed also by the direct comparison of the two cells. These results provide confidence on the agreement between the experimental comparison and the SIE/OME evaluation. Finally, the improvement of the new zinc cell is reflected also in a lower uncertainty budget for the fixed-point realization

    Age-related microvascular degeneration in the human cerebral periventricular white matter

    Clinical studies have identified white matter (WM) lesions as hyperintensive regions in the MRI images of elderly patients. Since a cerebrovascular origin was attributed to such lesions, the present analysis set out to define the microvascular histopathologic changes in the periventricular WM in the aged. Post-mortem samples of the frontal, parietal, and occipital periventricular WM of 40-90-year-old subjects were prepared for quantitative light and electron microscopy. Light microscopic examination revealed microvascular fibrohyalinosis as the most common type of microvascular damage in the elderly. Ultrastructural analysis identified the microvascular thickening as collagen deposits affecting the basement membrane. The vascular density did not correlate with the age. The basement membrane pathology significantly increased, while the number of intact microvessels gradually decreased, with advancing age in the frontal and occipital WM. Finally, peripheral atherosclerosis coincided with massive microvascular fibrosis, particularly in the frontal WM. Our results demonstrate an age-related microvascular degeneration in the periventricular WM, which may contribute to the development of WM lesions by hindering a sufficient supply of nutrients to the affected WM sites. Furthermore, the data accord with previous observations identifying the frontal lobe as the site at which WM vulnerability is most pronounced. Finally, atherosclerosis in large, peripheral vessels is considered to be a predictive marker of microvascular pathology in the WM.</p

    Factors Moderating the Association Between Cannabis Use and Psychosis Risk: A Systematic Review

    Increasing evidence indicates a relationship between cannabis use and psychosis risk. Specific factors, such as determinants of cannabis use or the genetic profile of cannabis users, appear to moderate this association. The present systematic review presents a detailed and up-to-date literature overview on factors that influence the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis risk. A systematic search was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines in MEDLINE and Embase, and 56 studies were included. The results show that, in particular, frequent cannabis use, especially daily use, and the consumption of high-potency cannabis are associated with a higher risk of developing psychosis. Moreover, several genotypes moderate the impact of cannabis use on psychosis risk, particularly those involved in the dopamine function, such as AKT1. Finally, cannabis use is associated with an earlier psychosis onset and increased risk of transition in individuals at a clinical high risk of psychosis. These findings indicate that changing cannabis use behavior could be a harm reduction strategy employed to lower the risk of developing psychosis. Future research should aim to further develop specific biomarkers and genetic profiles for psychosis, thereby contributing to the identification of individuals at the highest risk of developing a psychotic disorder

    Upstream sources of the Denmark Strait Overflow : observations from a high-resolution mooring array

The array was deployed from September 2011 to July 2012, and captured the vast majority of overflow water denser than 27.8 kgm-3 approaching the sill. The mean transport of overflow water over the length of the deployment was 3.54 ± 0.16 Sv. Of this, 0.58 Sv originated from below sill depth, revealing that aspiration takes place in Denmark Strait. We confirm the presence of two main sources of overflow water: one approaching the sill in the East Greenland Current and the other via the North Icelandic Jet. Using an objective technique based on the hydrographic properties of the water, the transports of these two sources are found to be 2.54 ± 0.17 Sv and 1.00 ± 0.17 Sv, respectively. We further partition the East Greenland Current source into that carried by the shelfbreak jet (1.50 ± 0.16 Sv) versus that transported by a separated branch of the current on the Iceland slope (1.04 ± 0.15 Sv). Over the course of the year the total overflow transport is more consistent than the transport in either branch; compensation takes place among the pathways that maintains a stable total overflow transport. This is especially true for the two East Greenland Current branches whose transports vary out of phase with each other on weekly and longer time scales.     The impact of cannabidiol treatment on resting state functional connectivity, prefrontal metabolite levels and reward processing in recent-onset patients with a psychotic disorder

    The first clinical trials with cannabidiol (CBD) as treatment for psychotic disorders have shown its potential as an effective and well-tolerated antipsychotic agent. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the antipsychotic profile of CBD are currently unclear. Here we investigated the impact of 28-day adjunctive CBD or placebo treatment (600 mg daily) on brain function and metabolism in 31 stable recent-onset psychosis patients (&lt;5 years after diagnosis). Before and after treatment, patients underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) session including resting state functional MRI, proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and functional MRI during reward processing. Symptomatology and cognitive functioning were also assessed. CBD treatment significantly changed functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN; time × treatment interaction p = 0.037), with increased connectivity in the CBD (from 0.59 ± 0.39 to 0.80 ± 0.32) and reduced connectivity in the placebo group (from 0.77 ± 0.37 to 0.62 ± 0.33). Although there were no significant treatment effects on prefrontal metabolite concentrations, we showed that decreased positive symptom severity over time was associated with both diminishing glutamate (p = 0.029) and N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA; neuronal integrity marker) levels (p = 0.019) in the CBD, but not the placebo group. CBD treatment did not have an impact on brain activity patterns during reward anticipation and receipt or functional connectivity in executive and salience networks. Our results show that adjunctive CBD treatment of recent-onset psychosis patients induced changes in DMN functional connectivity, but not prefrontal metabolite concentrations or brain activity during reward processing. These findings suggest that DMN connectivity alteration may be involved in the therapeutic effects of CBD.</p

    The effect of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use after diagnosis on survival of oesophageal cancer patients

    Background:Aspirin use has been shown to lower incidence and mortality in cancer patients. The aim of this population-based study was to determine the effect of postdiagnosis low-dose aspirin use on survival of patients with oesophageal cancer.Methods:Patients with oesophageal cancer (1998-2010) were selected from the Eindhoven Cancer Registry and linked with outpatient pharmacy data regarding aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Users were subdivided into both prediagnosis and postdiagnosis or only postdiagnosis users. Parametric survival models with an exponential (Poisson) distribution were used with non-specific death as endpoint.Results:In this study 560 patients were included. Overall, 157 patients (28.0%) were non-users, 293 patients (52.3%) pre-and postdiagnosis (89 aspirin and 204 NSAID users) and 110 patients (19.6%) only postdiagnosis users (16 aspirin and 94 NSAID users).     The impact of maintenance therapy on sleep-wake rhythms and cancer-related fatigue in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Purpose: To assess the impact of maintenance therapy and the additional impact of dexamethasone treatment on cancer-related fatigue and sleep-wake rhythms in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients and to determine the association between these outcomes. Methods: A national cohort of pediatric ALL patients (≄ 2 years) was included (± 1 year post-diagnosis). Patients receiving dexamethasone were assessed twice (assessment with and without dexamethasone). Actigraphy assessments were used to calculate sleep-wake outcomes with nonparametric methods. Cancer-related fatigue was assessed with the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale. Sleep-wake rhythms and cancer-related fatigue were compared between patients participating in the assessment without dexamethasone and healthy children (linear regression) and between assessments with and without dexamethasone (mixed models). Using linear regression, associations between sleep-wake outcomes and cancer-related fatigue were determined during assessments with and without dexamethasone. Results: Responses were collected for 125 patients (113 assessments with and 81 without dexamethasone).
