Proper Indwelling and External Catheter use to Reduce CAUTI\u27s

Evidence based practice and research shows that the risk for CAUTI’s increases each day of catheterization. Research also showed that the rate of inappropriate catheterizations was very high. The conclusion made from the research recommended that catheters be removed as soon as possible in order to decrease the risk of CAUTI’s. Interventions to decrease CAUTI and inappropriate catheterization rates includes requiring a new doctors order for the continuation of an indwelling catheter every day and requiring more frequent assessment of the need for a PureWick. This method forces both the doctor and the nurse to assess the patient for the need to continue IDC and it requires nurses to assess patients for the actual need to continue the PureWick. By implementing these interventions into practice, the rates of CAUTI’s, skin breakdown and inappropriate catheterizations should decrease. Catheter associated UTI’s are a huge issue in hospitals today, and they account for a large portion of nosocomial infections. These CAUTI’s have a variety of causes and have the ability to affect anyone regardless of age, gender and ethnicity. Two things that all of these studies have in common is that longer durations of catheterization lead to increased risks of CAUTI’s and older adults are the most common populations for inappropriate catheterization. The aim of this study is to show interventions that could reduce CAUTI’s in the future. Key Words: CAUTI, daily orders, catheterizatio

The Lonely Ones: Selfhood and Society in Harry Stack Sullivan\u27s Psychiatric Thought

This thesis examines the contributions of psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan (1892-1949) to an ongoing conversation on the self and society in the United States, from classical liberal political theory to the mid-twentieth century social sciences. Existing literature overlooks the 1940s as a divided period in American intellectual history. This project argues that an accurate presentation of the era demands the inclusion of thinkers who were excluded from mainstream institutions as a consequence of their training in \u27professional\u27 academic disciplines or social marginalization along the lines of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexuality. Careful examination of Sullivan\u27s lectures, scholarly articles, unpublished manuscripts, and biographical material locates his place in this conversation and further highlights the influence of his experiences as a gay, working-class, Irish-Catholic psychiatrist on his innovative theories. Sullivan\u27s ideas addressed aspects of life in the United States ignored by established academics, shaping the subjects and methods later associated with the very institutions from which he was excluded and resonating with late-twentieth century advances in queer theory. This thesis contributes to the expansion of intellectual history to include thinkers from a greater diversity of personal backgrounds who hypothesized foundational changes to a mainstream American society from which they were excluded

Reconciled Liberalism as a Mechanism for Foreign Aid Evaluation

    Get PDF
The argument of this thesis is that it is necessary to expand the scope of current evaluations of foreign aid provision to include an examination of empirical indicators of political theory justifications, providing an additional standard by which individual donors can determine the most beneficial use of their aid dollars. Accepting liberalism as an important political theory, exploration of three distinct liberal interpretations can be explored: libertarianism, liberal substantive ends and reconciled libertarian paternalism. Each of these interpretations aligns with a method of foreign aid provision and a corresponding aid provision organization. The GiveDirectly unconditional cash transfer program, Oportunidades conditional cash transfer program and Millennium Villages Project direct provision program will be evaluated in order to determine if they are successful in producing results congruent with their own theoretical justifications. Finally, each will be evaluated based on a holistic interpretation of liberalism, reconciled libertarian paternalism, in order to determine which program most effectively achieves the goals of liberal political theory. This organization will receive evidence to reinforce support among donors who believe contributing to the organization’s efforts furthers liberal goals in global development

    Budget Quadcopter Kit

    Get PDF
Over the past few years quadcopters, also known as drones, have really started to take off in a recreational market. The technology has come a long way over the past decade and as with most technology, as it has matured it has become cheaper and more accessible to everyday people. So much so that anyone can go online and purchase a small quadcopter for under $20. They are relatively easy to fly and can even be flown indoors due to how safe they are as well. However, buying a quadcopter online doesn\u27t really allow the consumer to develop a true understanding of how quadcopters are build and how they function. It is possible to purchase a kit online in order to build a quadcopter and develop that better understanding but these kits can be more expensive than the average consumer would like to spend. It is also possible to build a quadcopter from different parts purchased online but this can also get expensive as well as incredibly confusing. The goal of this project was to solve those issues, and make the quadcopter building experience both simple and affordable for a consumer who may want to learn more about quadcopters and have a quadcopter of their own

Adjusting Learning Parameters to Increase Cognitive Resource Allocation in Persons with Alcoholism Risk

    Get PDF
Parental history of alcoholism is associated with increased alcoholism risk in their children. One factor increasing alcoholism risk is the presence of attention and information encoding disruptions in adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) compared to persons who are not ACOAs (NACOA). Alcohol ingestion reduces these disruptions in ACOAs. This study examined whether alterations of information processing parameters can function like alcohol and reduce processing disruptions experienced by the ACOA. Participants were 80 ACOAs and 80 NACOAs, partitioned into four groups of 20 participants. During learning, subjects studied presentations of stimulus items followed by the presentation of associated response items. The task was to learn which stimulus was associated with which response item. Based on information processing parameters, the study used a 2.5 second learning response period and either a short (3.0 second) or a long (5.0 second) period for evaluating whether the response was or was not correct. Within each group, one-half of the subjects received a short and one-half received a long response evaluation period. In addition to learning performance, information processing was evaluated using psychophysiological-indices of resource allocation in the central nervous system. Whereas the learning performance of the ACOAs during the short review periods was significantly below the performance of the NACOAs, the groups did not significantly differ during long review period conditions. The findings support the implementation of “tuning” information processing parameters to compensate for processing disruptions related to ACOA-status. This outcome could allow development of focused preventive strategies for persons at higher risk for alcoholism
