CPT- and B-Violation: The p-pbar Sector
The CPT symmetry of relativistic quantum field theory requires the total
lifetimes of particles and antiparticles be equal. Detection of pbar lifetime
shorter than tau_p > O(10^32) yr would signal breakdown of CPT invariance, in
combination with B-violation. The best current limit on tau_pbar, inferred from
cosmic ray measurements, is about one Myr, placing lower limits on
CPT-violating scales that depend on the exact mechanism. Paths to CPT breakdown
within and outside ordinary quantum mechanics are sketched. Many of the
limiting CPT-violating scales in pbar decay lie within the weak-to-Planck

2-deoxyglucose inhibits induction of chemokine expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and adipose tissue explants
© 2016 The Obesity Society Objective: To determine the influence of glycolytic inhibition on the adipocyte inflammatory response. Methods: To determine the effect of 2-deoxyglucose (2-DOG) on the inflammatory response, mature 3T3-L1 adipocytes were co-treated with 2-DOG and LPS or TNF. To determine the effect of endoplasmic reticulum stress on TNF-induced induction of chemokines, adipocytes were pretreated with thapsigargin or salubrinal. Chemokine mRNA levels were determined using quantitative real-time PCR, and secretion of CCL2 was determined by Western blot. Results: 2-DOG treatment reduced the ability of LPS and TNF to induce CCL2 mRNA levels and reduced secreted CCL2 protein levels in a dose-dependent manner. A similar pattern of mRNA regulation was observed for other chemokines. The attenuation of TNF-induced CCL2 mRNA levels occurred regardless of whether glucose or pyruvate was present in the media, suggesting that mechanisms other than glycolysis might mediate the observed effects. Treatment with the endoplasmic reticulum stressor thapsigargin and the endoplasmic reticulum signaling activator salubrinal reduced chemokine mRNA levels similarly to 2-DOG. Conclusions: Collectively, our data indicate that 2-DOG suppresses inflammatory chemokine induction in adipocytes. The effects of 2-DOG do not seem to be linked to glycolysis but correlate with endoplasmic reticulum stress activation
1.3 mm Polarized emission in the circumstellar disk of a massive protostar
We present the first resolved observations of the 1.3 mm polarized emission from the disk-like structure surrounding the high-mass protostar Cepheus A HW2. These CARMA data partially resolve the dust polarization, suggesting a uniform morphology of polarization vectors with an average position angle of 57° ± 6° and an average polarization fraction of 2.0% ± 0.4%. The distribution of the polarization vectors can be attributed to (1) the direct emission of magnetically aligned grains of dust by a uniform magnetic field, or (2) the pattern produced by the scattering of an inclined disk. We show that both models can explain the observations, and perhaps a combination of the two mechanisms produces the polarized emission. A third model including a toroidal magnetic field does not match the observations. Assuming scattering is the polarization mechanism, these observations suggest that during the first few 104 years of high-mass star formation, grain sizes can grow from1 mm to several 10s μm.Fil: Fernandez Lopez, Manuel. The Time Machine: A Simulation Approach for Stochastic Trees
In the following paper we consider a simulation technique for stochastic
trees. One of the most important areas in computational genetics is the
calculation and subsequent maximization of the likelihood function associated
to such models. This typically consists of using importance sampling (IS) and
sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) techniques. The approach proceeds by simulating
the tree, backward in time from observed data, to a most recent common ancestor
(MRCA). However, in many cases, the computational time and variance of
estimators are often too high to make standard approaches useful. In this paper
we propose to stop the simulation, subsequently yielding biased estimates of
the likelihood surface. The bias is investigated from a theoretical point of
view. Results from simulation studies are also given to investigate the balance
between loss of accuracy, saving in computing time and variance reduction.Comment: 22 Pages, 5 Figure
Testing Magnetic Field Models for the Class 0 Protostar L1527
For the Class 0 protostar, L1527, we compare 131 polarization vectors from
SCUPOL/JCMT, SHARP/CSO and TADPOL/CARMA observations with the corresponding
model polarization vectors of four ideal-MHD, non-turbulent, cloud core
collapse models. These four models differ by their initial magnetic fields
before collapse; two initially have aligned fields (strong and weak) and two
initially have orthogonal fields (strong and weak) with respect to the rotation
axis of the L1527 core. Only the initial weak orthogonal field model produces
the observed circumstellar disk within L1527. This is a characteristic of
nearly all ideal-MHD, non-turbulent, core collapse models. In this paper we
test whether this weak orthogonal model also has the best agreement between its
magnetic field structure and that inferred from the polarimetry observations of
L1527. We found that this is not the case; based on the polarimetry
observations the most favored model of the four is the weak aligned model.
However, this model does not produce a circumstellar disk, so our result
implies that a non-turbulent, ideal-MHD global collapse model probably does not
represent the core collapse that has occurred in L1527. Our study also
illustrates the importance of using polarization vectors covering a large area
of a cloud core to determine the initial magnetic field orientation before
collapse; the inner core magnetic field structure can be highly altered by a
collapse and so measurements from this region alone can give unreliable

Protostellar accretion traced with chemistry. High resolution C18O and continuum observations towards deeply embedded protostars in Perseus
Context: Understanding how accretion proceeds is a key question of star
formation, with important implications for both the physical and chemical
evolution of young stellar objects. In particular, very little is known about
the accretion variability in the earliest stages of star formation.
Aims: To characterise protostellar accretion histories towards individual
sources by utilising sublimation and freeze-out chemistry of CO.
Methods: A sample of 24 embedded protostars are observed with the
Submillimeter Array (SMA) in context of the large program "Mass Assembly of
Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA" (MASSES). The size of the
CO emitting region, where CO has sublimated into the gas-phase, is
measured towards each source and compared to the expected size of the region
given the current luminosity. The SMA observations also include 1.3 mm
continuum data, which are used to investigate whether a link can be established
between accretion bursts and massive circumstellar disks.
Results: Depending on the adopted sublimation temperature of the CO ice,
between 20% and 50% of the sources in the sample show extended CO
emission indicating that the gas was warm enough in the past that CO sublimated
and is currently in the process of refreezing; something which we attribute to
a recent accretion burst. Given the fraction of sources with extended CO
emission, we estimate an average interval between bursts of 20000-50000 yr,
which is consistent with previous estimates. No clear link can be established
between the presence of circumstellar disks and accretion bursts, however the
three closest known binaries in the sample (projected separations <20 AU) all
show evidence of a past accretion burst, indicating that close binary
interactions may also play a role in inducing accretion variability.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 21 pages, 13 figure
The Schwinger Mechanism, the Unruh Effect and the Production of Accelerated Black Holes
We compute the corrections to the transition amplitudes of an accelerated
Unruh ``box'' that arise when the accelerated box is replaced by a ``two level
ion'' immersed in a constant electric field and treated in second quantization.
There are two kinds of corrections, those due to recoil effects induced by the
momentum transfers and those due to pair creation. Taken together, these
corrections show that there is a direct relationship between pair creation
amplitudes described by the Heisenberg-Euler-Schwinger mechanism and the Unruh
effect, i.e. the thermalisation of accelerated systems at temperature where is the acceleration. In particular, there is a thermodynamical
consistency between both effects whose origin is that the euclidean action
governing pair creation rates acts as an entropy in delivering the Unruh
temperature. Upon considering pair creation of charged black holes in an
electric field, these relationships explain why black holes are created from
vacuum in thermal equilibrium, i.e. with their Hawking temperature equal to
