Lorsque j’étais étudiant en Grande-Bretagne il y a plusieurs années, un migrant hors de sa langue et de son monde, « un Hellène » et « un Chypriote postcolonial », j’ai été troublé par la périodisation linéaire de mes études littéraires qui allait de Beowulf à TS Eliot et me laissait perplexe quant à ma propre appartenance – à la recherche des connections fortuites et des turbulences par lesquelles j’étais dans cette classe. Islands, Literature, and Cultural Translatability

This essay provides a historical overview of the island tradition in European literature and links it specifically to the notion of cultural translatability and the idea of the floating island as a floating signifier with a focus on canonical writers from Greco-Roman antiquity to the contemporary period, and finally using the example of the Caribbean to discuss islands in a post-colonial and global perspective.  Island spaces are used to explore and create bridges between the real and the imaginary as a response to cultural and social realities, frequently taking the form of utopias/dystopias, Edens, Arcadias, nations, metatexts, cultural crossroads.  The virtual spaces of islands are susceptible to translatability and articulate perspectives on the shifting relationship between self and other, center and periphery, serving as sites of mediation between cultures. Within an increasingly global culture marked by inequalities and differences, islands may induce a contrapuntal approach to literary and cultural criticism

An island of translation

The island of Cyprus has been shaped by a hopelessly complex multicultural history, division, and by a geographical position that has long ambiguated the geopolitical borders of ‘Europe’, ‘Asia’, and ‘the Middle East’. Any discussion of translation, literature, history, and culture in this zone of indeterminate encounter between heterogeneous cultures and populations is intriguing. The literature of Cyprus has been shaped across a spectrum of languages and trans-cultural relations which may range from confrontation, indifference or mutual exclusion, to creative engagement depending on the social and cultural processes and historical moments

Winds come from somewhere

did not understand everything the sibyls told me but am susceptible to their words. I was an apprentice to Hermes, who taught me how to listen and interpret their utterances, and to hear their messages beyond the meanings of words, by turning my ear to the earth and my eyes to the stars and the skies, and to sense with my body the movements of the winds. But as I left the island in the Middle Sea too soon, the messages they passed on to me faded yet still echo inside me in enigmas and riddles of tongues I once spoke and now translate with new words as I learnt new riddles from the seers on the island of the northern sea. And with inversions and conversions of the years, their words would move around inside me so that the voices of the sibyls, Elengou and Marikkou, would echo in the voices of the English seers, Alan Alexander Milne and Wystan Hugh Auden — where the wind comes from, where the wind goes — It’s flying from somewhere As fast as it can, I couldn’t keep up with it, Nor if I ran. I did learn with time that the winds must come from somewhere when they blow, and that time will say nothing but I told you so

Focusing on the year 1957, when he was abducted by his father, Stephanides' narrative is vibrant with sensual emotion. Formally it alternates memories in poetic prose and poems laid out as poems which are even denser in their texture

Cypriot poetry and translation practise

Le thème du colloque « Chypre entre Orient et Occident » nous invite à considérer Chypre comme un entre-deux au regard d'une pratique de la traduction qui jette un pont entre des textes relevant de différentes cultures. En me basant sur les écrits de Walter Benjamin (et le penchant post-structuraliste pour l'historiographie critique de la théorie de la traduction de cet auteur), je proposerai ici de relire une sélection de poètes chypriotes contemporains et j'analyserai leur travail comme une pratique de traduction. J'explorerai les situations révélatrices de l'obsession et du désir de traduction dans des textes culturellement opposés. Mon souci sera de démontrer l'absence, l'insuffisance, le refoulement ou au contraire la conscience d'une asymétrie ou d'une différence culturelle à l'œuvre, dans l'intention du discours traduit par la poétique et dans celle du traducteur du poète. Je me concentrerai sur des poèmes de Andriana Terodiaconou, Niki Marangou et Nasa Patapiou et j'examinerai la manière dont la traductibilité (conjonction du passé et du présent, du soi et de l'autre) est déterminée par l'intention de postérité (d'une vie au-delà) ou par l'adjonction d'un supplément au signifiant. J'examinerai ensuite la manière dont ceci peut être envisagé comme un besoin d'intervention sur – ou de rupture avec – une histoire totalisante ou mortifiante. Enfin, je montrerai brièvement comment dans ma propre traduction de poèmes grecs en anglais (traduction s'exerçant sur une traduction), j'explore de nouvelles stratégies d'intervention pour transposer l'intention du texte grec dans un autre système culturel.Stephanides Stephanos.
