Determination of the strong coupling and its running from measurements of inclusive jet production

    Get PDF
The value of the strong coupling S is determined in a comprehensive analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics. The analysis uses double-differential cross section measurements from the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at centre-of- mass energies of 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV, combined with inclusive deep-inelastic data from HERA. The value S_S(Z_Z ) = 0.1176 0.0016+0.0014^{+0.0014}_{-0.0016} is obtained at the scale of the Z boson mass. By using the measurements in different intervals of jet transverse momentum, the running of S_S is probed for energies between 100 and 1600 GeV

Measurement of the CP properties of the Higgs boson in the decay into tau leptons with the Run 3 data of the CMS experiment

    No full text
The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson is predicted to be CP-even. Measurements from Run 2 data at the LHC have excluded a purely CP-odd state at 3 standard deviations. However, experimental results up to now do not exclude the possibility for the Higgs boson to be a mixture of a CP-even and a CP-odd state. The analysis of the Run 3 combined with the Run 2 data collected by the CMS experiment will allow to elucidate the CP nature of the SM Higgs boson. The Run 3 analysis is developed by exploiting observables sensitive to CP in the decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of tau leptons using the Columnflow approach. This talk will cover the strategy of the analysis: starting from the theoretical motivation, discussing the main steps, and presenting the first data and Monte Carlo comparisons for some observables with the 2022 dataset

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of condensers at the CHP

Abstract In traditional condensers of combined heat and power (CHP) plants, water is used, which is discharged into the environment and creates environmental stress. It is proposed to cool the steam by air or freon. The basic schemes of CHP condensers operating on compressed air and freon are given. A comparative calculation of the condenser operating on water, air and freon was carried out. Analysis of the results shows the effectiveness of air, and freon compared to water. The advantage of freon is that it circulates in the heat exchanger, forming a closed system. At decreasing the temperature difference at the inlet and outlet to the condenser, the heat transfer coefficient of freon is higher than that of air.</jats:p

Searches for neutral BSM Higgs bosons decaying into tau leptons

The CMS Collaboration has reported in Run 2 two excesses above the background expectation in the search for a Beyond Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into tau leptons, at masses of 0.1 and 1.2 TeV and in the gluon fusion production process. This talk will present the strategy for a similar search with data collected by the CMS experiment in Run 3. First distributions and comparisons of data and Monte Carlo simulations will be shown for 2022 and 2023 data

Discourse Parsing for Contentious, Non-Convergent Online Discussions

    No full text
Online discourse is often perceived as polarized and unproductive. While some conversational discourse parsing frameworks are available, they do not naturally lend themselves to the analysis of contentious and polarizing discussions. Inspired by the Bakhtinian theory of Dialogism, we propose a novel theoretical and computational framework, better suited for non-convergent discussions. We redefine the measure of a successful discussion, and develop a novel discourse annotation schema which reflects a hierarchy of discursive strategies. We consider an array of classification models -- from Logistic Regression to BERT. We also consider various feature types and representations, e.g., LIWC categories, standard embeddings, conversational sequences, and non-conversational discourse markers learnt separately. Given the 31 labels in the tagset, an average F-Score of 0.61 is achieved if we allow a different model for each tag, and 0.526 with a single model. The promising results achieved in annotating discussions according to the proposed schema paves the way for a number of downstream tasks and applications such as early detection of discussion trajectories, active moderation of open discussions, and teacher-assistive bots. Finally, we share the first labeled dataset of contentious non-convergent online discussions
