Safeguarded Processing of Sensor Data
International audienceThe spectrum of software tasks no longer includes only rare function controlling tasks for sensor actuator chains in reactive embedded systems. However, more and more responsible challenges like safety-critical scenarios are tackled. Therefore sensor data have to be safeguarded by several mechanism. An obvious and widely used approach is the use of two redundant hardware controllers, but this comes along with an additional cost, space and energy factor. Another way to fulfill certain safety properties is to implement a second diverse software channel in a single micro-controller architecture according the Safely Embedded Software (SES) approach. However, a lack of performance occurs by implementing this diverse channel for complex computations e.g. floating-point operations. This paper gives an approach for transferring the SES into a coprocessor and to migrate SES to a flexible and powerful FPGA architecture
An archival case study : revisiting the life and political economy of Lauchlin Currie
This paper forms part of a wider project to show the significance of archival material on distinguished economists, in this case Lauchlin Currie (1902-93), who studied and taught at Harvard before entering government service at the US Treasury and Federal Reserve Board as the intellectual leader of Roosevelt's New Deal, 1934-39, as FDR's White House economic adviser in peace and war, 1939-45, and as a post-war development economist. It discusses the uses made of the written and oral material available when the author was writing his intellectual biography of Currie (Duke University Press 1990) while Currie was still alive, and the significance of the material that has come to light after Currie's death
Assessment of efficacy and safety of the herbal medicinal product BNO 1016 in chronic rhinosinusitis
Background: The objective of this clinical trial (CRS-02) was to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of two dosages of the herbal medicinal product BNO 1016 (Sinupret extract) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
Methodology: 929 patients suffering from CRS were enrolled in this randomised placebo-controlled trial with a treatment period of 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was the mean Major Symptom Score (MSS) in week 8 and week 12 compared to placebo. Secondary endpoints included further MSS related parameters and responder rates over time. Pharmacoeconomic endpoints were also analysed. Finally, safety and tolerability were evaluated.
Results: Sinupret extract was not superior over placebo regarding the primary endpoint. However, the results of the secondary endpoints showed a clear trend towards superior efficacy. Therefore, additional post-hoc sensitivity analyses were performed in patients with a baseline MSS > 9 and persistence of disease > 1 year diagnosed by specialists in otorhinolaryngology.Those patients significantly benefited from Sinupret extract. Therapy was superior for the primary endpoint analysis. Patients were less impaired with respect to work and daily activities. A good safety and tolerability of Sinupret extract was assured in all patients.
Conclusions: Sinupret extract can safely be administered in patients with CRS. Although the primary endpoint of the study was not significant, a post-hoc subgroup analysis in patients whose disease was diagnosed by a specialist revealed a pronounced treatment effect. Effects in that subgroup were even stronger with longer disease persistence and stronger severity
Searching for solar-like oscillations in pre-main sequence stars using APOLLO
In recent years, our understanding of solar-like oscillations from main
sequence to red giant stars has improved dramatically thanks to pristine data
collected from space telescopes. One of the remaining open questions focuses
around the observational identification of solar-like oscillations in pre-main
sequence stars.
We aim to develop an improved method to search for solar-like oscillations in
pre-main sequence stars and apply it to data collected by the Kepler K2
mission. Our software APOLLO includes a novel way to detect low signal-to-noise
ratio solar like oscillations in the presence of a high background level.
By calibrating our method using known solar-like oscillators from the main
Kepler mission, we apply it to T Tauri stars observed by Kepler K2 and identify
several candidate pre-main sequence solar-like oscillators. We find that our
method is robust even when applied to time-series of observational lengths as
short as those obtained with the TESS satellite in one sector. We identify EPIC
205375290 as a possible candidate for solar-like oscillations in a pre-main
sequence star with Hz. We also derive EPIC

Rare variants in KDR, encoding VEGF Receptor 2, are associated with tetralogy of Fallot
Purpose: Rare genetic variants in KDR, encoding the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), have been reported in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). However, their role in disease causality and pathogenesis remains unclear.
Methods: We conducted exome sequencing in a familial case of TOF and large-scale genetic studies, including burden testing, in >1,500 patients with TOF. We studied gene-targeted mice and conducted cell-based assays to explore the role of KDR genetic variation in the etiology of TOF.
Results: Exome sequencing in a family with two siblings affected by TOF revealed biallelic missense variants in KDR. Studies in knock-in mice and in HEK 293T cells identified embryonic lethality for one variant when occurring in the homozygous state, and a significantly reduced VEGFR2 phosphorylation for both variants. Rare variant burden analysis conducted in a set of 1,569 patients of European descent with TOF identified a 46-fold enrichment of protein-truncating variants (PTVs) in TOF cases compared to controls (P = 7 Ă 10-11).
Conclusion: Rare KDR variants, in particular PTVs, strongly associate with TOF, likely in the setting of different inheritance patterns. Supported by genetic and in vivo and in vitro functional analysis, we propose loss-of-function of VEGFR2 as one of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of TOF
Light emission from direct band gap germanium containing split-interstitial defects
The lack of useful and cost-efficient group-IV direct band gap light emitters still presents the main bottleneck for complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible short-distance data transmission, single-photon emission, and sensing based on silicon photonics. Germanium, a group-IV element like Si, is already widely used in silicon fabs. While the energy band gap of Ge is intrinsically indirect, we predict that the insertion of Ge-Ge split-[110] interstitials into crystalline Ge can open up a direct band gap transmission path. Here, we calculate from first principles the band structure and optical emission properties of Ge, Sb, and Sn split-[110] interstitials in bulk and low-dimensional Ge at different doping concentrations. Two types of electronic states provide the light-emission enhancement below the direct band gap of Ge: a hybridized L-Πstate at the Brillouin zone center and a conduction band of Î band character that couples to a raised valence band along the Î-X direction. Majority carrier introduced to the system through doping can enhance light emission by saturation of nonradiative paths. Ge-Sn split interstitials in Ge shift the top of the valence band towards the Î-X direction and increase the Î character of the L-Πstate, which results in a shift to longer emission wavelengths. Key spectral regions for datacom and sensing applications can be covered by applying quantum confinement in defect-enhanced Ge quantum dots for an emission wavelength shift from the midinfrared to the telecom regime.FWN â Publicaties zonder aanstelling Universiteit Leide
The Genetic Landscape and Clinical Implication of Pediatric Moyamoya Angiopathy in an International Cohort
Pediatric Moyamoya Angiopathy (MMA) is a progressive intracranial occlusive arteriopathy that represents a leading cause of transient ischemic attacks and strokes in childhood. Despite this, up to now no large, exclusively pediatric MMA cohort has been subjected to systematic genetic investigation. In this study, we performed molecular karyotyping, exome sequencing and automated structural assessment of missense variants on a series of 88 pediatric MMA patients and correlated genetic, angiographic and clinical (stroke burden) findings. The two largest subgroups in our cohort consisted of RNF213 and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients. While deleterious RNF213 variants were associated with a severe MMA clinical course with early symptom onset, frequent posterior cerebral artery involvement and higher stroke rates in multiple territories, NF1 patients had a similar infarct burden compared to non-NF1 individuals and were often diagnosed incidentally during routine MRIs. Additionally, we found that MMA-associated RNF213 variants have lower predicted functional impact compared to those associated with aortic disease. We also raise the question of MMA as a feature of recurrent as well as rare chromosomal imbalances and further support the possible association of MMA with STAT3 deficiency. In conclusion, we provide a comprehensive characterization at the genetic and clinical level of a large exclusively pediatric MMA population. Due to the clinical differences found across genetic subgroups, we propose genetic testing for risk stratification as part of the routine assessment of pediatric MMA patients
Improvements in Compassion and Fears of Compassion throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multinational Study
During large-scale disasters, social support, caring behaviours, and compassion are shown to protect against poor mental health outcomes. This multi-national study aimed to assess the fluctuations in compassion over time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents (Time 1 n = 4156, Time 2 n = 980, Time 3 n = 825) from 23 countries completed online self-report questionnaires measuring the flows of compassion (i.e., Compassionate Engagement and Action Scales) and fears of compassion toward self and others and from others (i.e., Fears of Compassion Scales) and mental health at three time-points during a 10-month period. The results for the flows of compassion showed that self-compassion increased at Time 3. Compassion for others increased at Time 2 and 3 for the general population, but in contrast, it decreased in health professionals, possibly linked to burnout. Compassion from others did not change in Time 2, but it did increase significantly in Time 3. For fears of compassion, fears of self-compassion reduced over time, fears of compassion for others showed more variation, reducing for the general public but increasing for health professionals, whilst fears of compassion from others did not change over time. Health professionals, those with compassion training, older adults, and women showed greater flows of compassion and lower fears of compassion compared with the general population, those without compassion training, younger adults, and men. These findings highlight that, in a period of shared suffering, people from multiple countries and nationalities show a cumulative improvement in compassion and reduction in fears of compassion, suggesting that, when there is intense suffering, people become more compassionate to self and others and less afraid of, and resistant to, compassion
Growth with Unused Capacity and Endogenous Depreciation
This paper contributes to the debate on income growth and distribution from a nonmainstream perspective. It looks, in particular, at the role that the degree of capacity utilization plays in the process of growth of an economy that is not perfectly competitive. The distinctive feature of the model presented in the paper is the hypothesis that the rate of capital depreciation is an increasing function of the degree of capacity utilization. This hypothesis implies analytical results that differ somewhat from those yielded by other Kaleckian models. Our model shows that, in a number of cases, the process of growth can be profit-led rather than wage-led. The model also determines the value to which the degree of capacity utilization converges in the long run
