Cruise performance of an isolated 1.15 pressure ratio turbofan propulsion system simulator at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 0.85
An isolated 1.15 pressure ratio turbofan engine simulator was tested at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 0.85. At Mach 0.75 the net propulsive force of the fan and nacelle (excluding core thrust) was 73 percent of the ideal fan net thrust. Internal losses amounted to 7 percent, and external drag amounted to 20 percent of the ideal fan net thrust. External pressure and friction drag were about equal. The propulsive efficiency with a 90 percent efficient fan would have been 63 percent. For the aerodynamic characteristics of the nacelle that was tested, increasing the fan pressure ratio to approximately 1.35 would have resulted in a maximum propulsive efficiency of 67 percent
A turbojet simulator for Mach numbers up to 2.0
A turbojet simulator was designed and fabricated for use in wind tunnel models. The simulator contains a six-stage, axial-flow compressor powered by a three-stage, axial-flow turbine. High pressure heated air was used to drive the turbine. At design conditions, compressor axial flow, turbine exit flow, and a third supplementary flow all entered the exhaust nozzle at equal values of pressure and termperature. Overall aerodynamic design, compressor operating conditions, automatic controls, turbine aerodynamic design, instrumentation, and calibration procedure is presented. Performance of the device when used to simulate a J-85 turbojet engine at transonic speeds is reported. The installed nozzle performance obtained with the simulator is also discussed and compared with flight data
Tangential Motions and Spectroscopy within NGC 6720, the Ring Nebula
We have combined recent Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images in the [O III]
5007 and [N II] 6583 lines with similar images made 9.557 years earlier to
determine the motion of the Ring Nebula within the plane of the sky. Scaled
ratio images argue for homologous expansion, that is, larger velocities scale
with increasing distance from the central star. The rather noisy pattern of
motion of individual features argues for the same conclusion and that the
silhouetted knots move at the same rate as the surrounding gas. These
tangential velocities are combined with information from a recent high
resolution radial velocity study to determine a dynamic distance, which is in
basic agreement with the distance determined from the parallax of the central
star. We have also obtained very high signal to noise ratio moderate resolution
spectra (9.4 Angstrom) along the major and minor axes of the nebula and from
this determined the electron temperatures and density in the multiple
ionization zones present. These results confirm the status of the Ring Nebula
as one of the older planetary nebulae, with a central star transitioning to the
white dwarf cooling curve. (Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble

Preparation of Subradiant States using Local Qubit Control in Circuit QED
Transitions between quantum states by photon absorption or emission are
intimately related to symmetries of the system which lead to selection rules
and the formation of dark states. In a circuit quantum electrodynamics setup,
in which two resonant superconducting qubits are coupled through an on-chip
cavity and driven via the common cavity field, one single-excitation state
remains dark. Here, we demonstrate that this dark state can be excited using
local phase control of individual qubit drives to change the symmetry of the
driving field. We observe that the dark state decay via spontaneous emission
into the cavity is suppressed, a characteristic signature of subradiance. This
local control technique could be used to prepare and study highly correlated
quantum states of cavity-coupled qubits.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Gravitino Dark Matter and Cosmological Constraints
The gravitino is a promising candidate for cold dark matter. We study
cosmological constraints on scenarios in which the gravitino is the lightest
supersymmetric particle and a charged slepton the next-to-lightest
supersymmetric particle (NLSP). We obtain new results for the hadronic
nucleosynthesis bounds by computing the 4-body decay of the NLSP slepton into
the gravitino, the associated lepton, and a quark-antiquark pair. The bounds
from the observed dark matter density are refined by taking into account
gravitinos from both late NLSP decays and thermal scattering in the early
Universe. We examine the present free-streaming velocity of gravitino dark
matter and the limits from observations and simulations of cosmic structures.
Assuming that the NLSP sleptons freeze out with a thermal abundance before
their decay, we derive new bounds on the slepton and gravitino masses. The
implications of the constraints for cosmology and collider phenomenology are
discussed and the potential insights from future experiments are outlined. We
propose a set of benchmark scenarios with gravitino dark matter and long-lived
charged NLSP sleptons and describe prospects for the Large Hadron Collider and

VLA Observations of H I in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)
We report the detection of 21-cm line emission from H I in the planetary
nebula NGC 7293 (the Helix). The observations, made with the Very Large Array,
show the presence of a ring of atomic hydrogen that is associated with the
outer portion of the ionized nebula. This ring is most probably gas ejected in
the AGB phase that has been subsequently photodissociated by radiation from the
central star. The H I emission spreads over about 50 km/s in radial velocity.
The mass in H I is approximately 0.07 solar masses, about three times larger
than the mass in molecular hydrogen and comparable with the mass in ionized

The three-dimensional structure of the Eta Carinae Homunculus
We investigate, using the modeling code SHAPE, the three-dimensional
structure of the bipolar Homunculus nebula surrounding Eta Carinae, as mapped
by new ESO VLT/X-Shooter observations of the H2 micron
emission line. Our results reveal for the first time important deviations from
the axisymmetric bipolar morphology: 1) circumpolar trenches in each lobe
positioned point-symmetrically from the center and 2) off-planar protrusions in
the equatorial region from each lobe at longitudinal (~55 degrees) and
latitudinal (10-20 degrees) distances from the projected apastron direction of
the binary orbit. The angular distance between the protrusions (~110 degrees)
is similar to the angular extent of each polar trench (~130 degrees) and nearly
equal to the opening angle of the wind-wind collision cavity (~110 degrees). As
in previous studies, we confirm a hole near the centre of each polar lobe and
no detectable near-IR H2 emission from the thin optical skirt seen prominently
in visible imagery. We conclude that the interaction between the outflows
and/or radiation from the central binary stars and their orientation in space
has had, and possibly still has, a strong influence on the Homunculus. This
implies that prevailing theoretical models of the Homunculus are incomplete as
most assume a single star origin that produces an axisymmetric nebula. We
discuss how the newly found features might be related to the Homunculus
ejection, the central binary and the interacting stellar winds. We also include
