Differential influence of four invasive plant species on soil physicochemical properties in a pot experiment
Purpose
This study compared the effects of four invasive plants, namely Impatiens glandulifera, Reynoutria japonica, Rudbeckia laciniata, and Solidago gigantea, as well as two native species-Artemisia vulgaris, Phalaris arundinacea, and their mixture on soil physicochemical properties in a pot experiment.
Materials and methods
Plants were planted in pots in two loamy sand soils. The soils were collected from fallows located outside (fallow soil) and within river valley (valley soil) under native plant communities. Aboveground plant biomass, cover, and soil physicochemical properties such as nutrient concentrations, pH, and water holding capacity (WHC) were measured after two growing seasons. Discriminant analysis (DA) was used to identify soil variables responsible for the discrimination between plant treatments. Identified variables were further compared between treatments using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s HSD test.
Results and discussion
Plant biomass, cover, and soil parameters depended on species and soil type. DA effectively separated soils under different plant species. DA on fallow soil data separated R. laciniata from all other treatments, especially I. glandulifera, native species and bare soil, along axis 1 (related mainly to exchangeable K, N-NH_{4}, total P, N-NO_{3}, and WHC). Large differences were found between R. laciniata and S. gigantea as indicated by axis 2 (S-SO_{4}, exchangeable Mg, total P, exchangeable Ca, and total Mg). DA on valley soil data separated R. japonica from all other treatments, particularly S. gigantea, R. laciniata, and native mixture, along axis 1 (N-NO_{3}, total N, S-SO_{4}, total P, pH). Along axis 2 (N-NO_{3}, N-NH_{4}, Olsen P, exchangeable K, WHC), large differences were observed between I. glandulifera and all other invaders.
Conclusions
Plant influence on soil differed both among invasive species and between invasive and native species. Impatiens glandulifera had a relatively weak effect and its soil was similar to both native and bare soils. Multidirectional effects of different invaders resulted in a considerable divergence in soil characteristics. Invasion-driven changes in the soil environment may trigger feedbacks that stabilize or accelerate invasion and hinder re-colonization by native vegetation, which has implications for the restoration of invaded habitats
Obesity and overweight - current health problems of childhood
WSTĘP. Otyłość jest współczesną chorobą cywilizacyjną wieku
dziecięcego. Leczenie otyłości u dzieci jest trudne. Podstawą leczenia
jest właściwa dieta, wzmożony wysiłek fizyczny i terapia
behawioralna.
Celem pracy było wykazanie wpływu różnych czynników: środowiskowych,
genetycznych i społecznych na występowanie otyłości
i nadwagi w wieku dziecięcym.
MATERIAŁ I METODY. Badaniami objęto 73 dzieci z rozpoznaniem
nadwagi lub otyłości (zakres 2-18 lat, mediana 13 lat). Badaną
populację podzielono na 2 grupy (grupa I - otyłość, grupa II
- nadwaga), które porównano statystycznie.
WYNIKI. Stwierdzono różnice znamienne statystycznie pomiędzy
grupą I i II w zakresie aktywności zawodowej rodziców oraz dodatkowego
wysiłku fizycznego. Wykazano korelację o umiarkowanej
sile między BMI ojca a BMI dziecka.
WNIOSKI.
2. Zaangażowanie rodziców w życie zawodowe i osobiste wpływa
3. Brak dodatkowej aktywności fizycznej odgrywa znaczącą rolę
w rozwoju otyłości.INTRODUCTION. Obesity is a present-day civilization disease of
childhood. The treatment of obesity in children is challenging. Adequate
diet, increased physical activity, behavioural therapy, and
the change of habits form the basics of treatment.
The aim of this work was to assess the influence of various factors
such as environmental, genetic, and social factors on the occurrence
of obesity and overweight during childhood.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. Seventy-three children diagnosed as
obese or overweight (aged 2-18 years, median 13 years) were
included in this study. The studied population was divided into
two groups (group I - obese, group II - overweight), which were
statistically compared.
RESULTS. Statistically significant differences were noted between
groups I and II in occupational activity of the parents and additional
exercise of the children.
A moderate correlation was noted between the father’s and the
child’s BMI.
CONCLUSIONS.
1. The revealed correlation between the father’s and the child’s
BMI may indicate that obesity is genetically determined or is caused
by an irregular lifestyle within the family.
2. The parents’ involvement in occupational and private life influence
the child’s life and may secondarily predispose to obesity.
3. Lack of additional exercise plays an important role in the development
of obesity
Background: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, incurable childhood disease. Chronically uncontrolled diabetes is associated with eye, kidney,
nerve, heart and blood vessel damage and function impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of various social and environmental factors, with a particular emphasis on education, on the level of metabolic control in diabetes.
Material and methods: The survey research was conducted in 102 children aged 0–18 years, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Based on the HbA1c level, patients were divided into: group A (63 patients with fairly well and moderately controlled type 1diabetes mellitus) and group B (39 patients with metabolically uncontrolled type 1diabetes mellitus). The impact of various environmental and social factors on the degree of metabolic control of type 1 diabetes was analysed.
Results: No effect of typical environmental and social factors, such as: place of residence, gender, parents’ education and their professional activity, on the level of metabolic control of type 1 diabetes was found. However, groups A and B significantly differed in the level of
knowledge about diabetes and its treatment, in the regularity of meals, in possessing a nutrition scale and in the self-assessed preparation
for taking care and custody of a child with type 1 diabetes.
Conclusions: 1. Children with type 1 diabetes and their parents require ongoing education about the disease and its treatment. 2. The
regularity of meals and the use of a nutrition scale have considerable impact on the level of metabolic control of the disease.
Materiał i metody: Badania ankietowe przeprowadzono u 102 dzieci w wieku 0–18 lat z rozpoznaniem cukrzycy typu 1. Uwzględniając stężenie HbA1c, wszystkich pacjentów podzielono na grupę A (63 pacjentów z dość dobrze i średnio wyrównaną metabolicznie cukrzycą typu 1) i grupę B (39 pacjentów z niewyrównaną metabolicznie cukrzycą typu 1).
Wnioski: 1. 2. Decydujący wpływ na
stopień wyrównania metabolicznego ma regularność spożywanych posiłków oraz wykorzystanie wagi do żywności podczas przygotowania posiłków
The analysis of the nutrition style and physical activity in children and adolescents with excessive body weight — the recommendations for patients and caregivers
In the studies conducted in the last decade in Poland, a tendency of the increase in the percentage of children with excessive body weight can be noticed. The reason for this situation, apart from the genetic and environmental factors known for years, is not only the economic growth of the society but the technological progress accompanying it, causing lifestyle changes that lead to minimizing the amount of physical effort. Therefore, the question what should be done to make a positive change in the population of people in developmental age has become the beginnings of this study. The aim of this study was to analyse the current lifestyle and the self-assessment of the condition of patients with a documented excessive body weight in relation to their age, and to formulate the recommendations for overweight children and their parents, which would result in the regression of the existing eating disorders and in a long-lasting positive change in lifestyle. The reason for these studies are also clinical observations that document the presence of such diseases in overweight children that do not occur or are very rare, as well as the risk of obese children easily becoming obese adults
Is urinary type IV collagen a good marker of early impairment of renal function in childhood cancers survivors?
Introduction: Nephrotoxicity, as a side effect of antineoplastic treatment, can occur in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). It worsens their quality of life especially if it leads to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Collagen turnover is known to be disturbed in CKD. Urinary type IV collagen (U-Col4) is recognized as an exponent of extracellular matrix synthesis and degradation in glomeruli and is thus involved in this turnover. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of U-Col4 in assessing early renal impairment in CCSs.
Material and methods: Seventy-eight CCSs, without CKD, bilateral kidney tumors, congenital kidney defects, urinary tract infections and diabetes, at least one year after ending antineoplastic treatment, and aged 1–18 years, were divided into three groups: 1) patients after nephroblastoma treatment (n = 18); 2) patients after other solid tumors treatment (n = 42); and 3) patients after anti-hamatopoietic and lymphatic system proliferative treatment (n = 18). Concentrations of creatinine and cystatin C in serum, and of albumin, creatinine, N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), and U-Col4 in urine, were measured, and a general urine analysis was performed. The albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), the urine U-Col4/creatinine ratio, the urine NAG/creatinine ratio and the estimated glomerular filtration rate were calculated according to the Schwartz equation and the Filler equation.
Results: We did not find any differences between the groups in the evaluated biochemical parameters. Weak negative correlations were found between U-Col4 and urine NAG/creatinine ratio (p = 0.02, R = –0.27) and ACR (p = 0.00, R = –0.39).
Conclusions: Evaluation of the usefulness of U-Col4 in assessing early renal impairment in CCSs requires further study. CCSs should be monitored for potential complications of antineoplastic treatment, even many years after its completion
Invasive plants affect arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi abundance and species richness as well as the performance of native plants grown in invaded soils
We studied the effects of invasions by three plant species: Reynoutria japonica, Rudbeckia laciniata, and Solidago gigantea, on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities in habitats located within and outside river val- leys. Arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization, AMF abundance and species richness in soils were assessed in adjacent plots with invaders and native vegetation. We also quantified the performance (expressed as shoot mass, chlorophyll fluores- cence, and the concentration of elements in shoots) of two common, mycorrhizal native plants, Plantago lanceolata and Trifolium repens, grown in these soils. The invasions of R. japonica, R. laciniata, and S. gigantea influenced AMF communities compared to native vegetation, but the changes depended on the mycorrhizal status of invaders. The effects of non-mycorrhizal R. japonica were the most pronounced. Its invasion reducedAMF abundance and species richness. In the plots of both mycorrhizal plants, R. laciniata and S. gigantea, we observed decreased AMF species richness in comparison to native vegetation. The AMF community alterations could be due to (i) depletion of organic C inputs toAMF in the case of R. japonica, (ii) plant secondary metabolites that directly inhibit or selectively stimulate AMF species, or (iii) changes in soil physicochemical properties induced by invasions. The effect of invasion onAMF abundance and species richness did not generally differ between valley and outside-valley habi- tats. The invasions affected photosynthetic performance and the concentrations of elements in the shoots of P. lanceolata or T. repens. However, the directions and magnitude of their response depended on both species identity and the mycorrhi- zal status of invaders

DNA Oxidative Cleavage Induced by the Novel Peptide Derivatives of 3-(quinoxalin-6-yl)alanine in Combination with Cu(II) or Fe(II) Ions
Three model dipeptides containing 3-(2,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)quinoxalin-6-yl)alanine, 3-(dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazin-11-yl)alanine, and 3-(2,3-diphenylquinoxalin-6-yl)alanine were studied with respect to their ability to bind selected transition metal ions, such as Cu(II), Fe(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Cr(III). It was found that only Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions could form stable complex species with the studied compounds. The ability to form the complexes correlated well with DNA damage experiments. Only the ferrous and cupric complexes are capable of generating both single- and double-strand scissions. However, double-strand breakages appear to be dominating lesions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, especially for copper(II) containing systems. The quantity of breakage products in the presence of N-(3-(dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine-11-yl)alanyl)glycine complexes was the highest as compared to the complexes of the remaining compounds. Moreover, this ligand was the only one that cleaved DNA in the absence of either Cu(II) or Fe(II) ions
Co wiemy o nefrotoksyczności metotreksatu u dzieci?
Metotreksat (MTX) to jeden z najszerzej stosowanych
leków przeciwnowotworowych. Obok cisplatyny
i ifosfamidu jest jednym z 3 cytostatyków, których
nefrotoksyczność jest szeroko omawiana
w piśmiennictwie. Duże dawki MTX mogą być bezpiecznie
podawane pacjentom z prawidłową funkcją
nerek pod warunkiem nawadniania, alkalizacji i farmakokinetycznie prowadzonej terapii „ratunkowej”
leukoworyną. W pracy przedstawiono właściwości
chemiczne i mechanizm działania MTX. Omówiono
patofizjologię, czynniki ryzyka, charakterystykę kliniczną
nefrotoksyczności MTX oraz postępowanie
profilaktyczne i terapeutyczne.
