    Sex expression in Serbian dendroflora: A case study of Fraxinus ornus var. angustifolia

    Out of a total number of tree species in Serbian flora, 28% are hermaphrodites, 43% are monoecious and 29% are dioecious. The dendroflora appears to have a larger proportion of unisexual than hermaphrodite species. The monoecious system is the dominant unisexual system within the tree species in Serbia. The possible sex differentiation by RAPD markers and Correspondence Analysis was examined in a population of Fraxinus ornus var. angustifolia. On the basis of 6 selected RAPD bands which contribute to the differentiation in frequency between male and hermaphrodite individuals, Correspondence Analysis visualized the following tendency: 20 trees of each variety were separated into two groups that mainly correspond to sexual types. Our results showed that RAPD markers assisted by Correspondence Analysis could be used in identifying male and hermaphrodite individuals in F. ornus varieties.Projekat ministarstva br. P17301

    Comparison of two analytical methods (ELISA and LC-MS/MS) for determination of aflatoxin B-1 in corn and aflatoxin M-1 in milk

    The aim of this paper is to assess the closeness of agreement between results of ELISA and LC-MS/MS methods for determination of aflatoxin B-1 in corn and aflatoxin M-1 in milk. Samples of corn (n=100) and milk (n=250) were simultaneously analyzed using ELISA and LC-MS/MS methods, after the severe drought that affected Serbia in summer 2012 resulting in occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in corn and aflatoxin M-1 in milk. Regression analysis showed higher level of agreement between aflatoxin B-1 samples (R2=0.994), compared to aflatoxin M-1 samples (r(2)=0.920). However, both techniques were satisfactory in meeting the requirements for official control purposes

    Influence of Gamma Radiation on the Stability of Aflatoxin in Milk

    Aflatoksini su značajan problem u oblasti bezbednosti hrane i rizika po zdravlje ljudi. Gama zračenje uništava opasne zagađivače u hrani kao što su bakterije, virusi, gljivice, pesticidi i toksini. U ovoj studiji je korišćeno gama zračenje da bi se smanjila količina aflatoksina u mleku. Rezultati su pokazali smanjenje aflatoksina u mleku za 9 % - 35,26 % u poređenju sa kontrolnim uzorkom. Smanjenje koncentracija aflatoksina u mleku nije proporcionalno primenjenoj dozi grama zračenja usled zgrušavanja mleka.Aflatoxins are a significant problem in the field of food safety and risk to human health. Gamma irradiation destroys dangerous contaminants in foods such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, pesticides, and toxins. In this study, we used gamma radiation to reduce the amount of aflatoxins in milk. The results showed a 9 % - 35.26 % reduction of aflatoxin in milk compared to the control sample.     The selective synthesis of 5,6-dihydropyrimidin-4(3H)-one scaffold (precursor of dihydrouracil) was a very difficult synthetic challenge that, so far, has not been achieved. For the first time, in this paper, green, selective and high-yields approach to 40 novel 5,6-dihydropyrimidin-4(3H)-ones (DHPMs) by one-pot reaction of aldehydes, Meldrum's acid and isothioureas under solvent-free conditions, in the presence of water, since an additive is presented. In the majority of cases, introduced methodology gave an unprecedented tautomer-selective fashion toward targeted compounds with excellent tautomeric purity (>99.9%), which reached 100% in few cases. The molecular structure of the five compounds has been determined by X-ray crystallography. In each one of them, very short length for the corresponding N2-C1 bond was noticed, making them especially interesting from a structural standpoint. This experimental fact can imply a highly localized electron π density in this part of each heterocyclic ring. The obtained experimental results, which are determined from NMR and ESI-MS study, indicate that this Biginelli-type reaction smoothly proceeds in a one-pot mode, pointing to the three-step tandem process, proceeding via the Knoevenagel, aza-Michael, and retro-Diels-Alder reactions.     Performance of a calculator for diagnosing the cause of liver damage

    Introduction/Objective. Making a calculator that would recognize patterns of abnormal liver function tests and link them to the most probable etiology could help clinicians in their initial orientation towards a definitive diagnosis in patients with liver damage. The aim of our study was to design, construct, and validate a calculator that based on a pattern of abnormalities in liver function tests of a patient with liver damage would propose the most probable etiology. Methods. Patterns of abnormal liver function tests for certain etiology of liver damage were extracted from distributions of actual values taken from reports in medical literature about patients whose etiology of liver damage was proven by reliable diagnostic tests. After setting up the calculator with the patterns extracted, its diagnostic value was checked under real-life conditions, on a sample of patients with liver damage whose etiology was established by the gold standard of diagnostics (biopsy or else). The calculator validation study was carried out at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade during a two-year period (2015–2016). Results. For all tested diagnoses, the calculator demonstrated a highly significant difference between the area under the receiver-operator curves’ values and the value of 0.5 (p < 0.001), and high level of sensitivity (more than 90%, except for the model for chronic hepatitis) as well as relatively high specificity (more than 75%) were noted, indicating good ability of the calculator to detect etiology of liver damage. Conclusion. New calculators showed satisfactory sensitivity and specificity for revealing major liver damage etiologies.     Potential drug-drug interactions among patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage treated at the Neurological Intensive Care Unit: a single-center experience

    Our aim was to determine the prevalence of potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) and to identify relevant factors associated with the occurrence of the most dangerous or contraindicated pDDIs (pCDDIs) in hospitalized patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH). A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed enrolling all consecutive patients with sICH treated at the Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Center in Kragujevac, Serbia, during the three-year period (2012-2014). The inclusion criteria encompassed patients aged 18 years and over, those diagnosed with ICH, and those prescribed at least two drugs during hospitalization, while we did not include patients whose hospitalization lasted less than 7 days, those who were diagnosed with other neurological diseases and patients with incomplete medical files. For each day of hospitalization, the online checker Micromedex® software was used to identify pDDIs and classify them according to severity. A total of 110 participants were analysed. A high prevalence of pDDIs (98.2%) was observed. The median number of pDDIs regardless of severity, was 8.00 (IQR 4.75-13.00;1-30). The pairs of drugs involving cardiovascular medicines were the most commonly identified pDDIs. Twenty percent of the total number of participants was exposed to pCDDIs. The use of multiple drugs from different pharmacological-chemical subgroups and the prescribing of anticoagulant therapy significantly increase the chance of pCDDI (aOR with 95% CI 1.19 (1.05-1.35) and 7.40 (1.13-48.96), respectively). This study indicates a high prevalence of pDDIs and pCDDIs in patients with sICH. The use of anticoagulant therapy appears to be the only modifiable clinically relevant predictor of pCDDIs

    Analysis of ochratoxin A in pig tissues using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) as confirmative methods

    Two different analytical methods for the determination and confirmation of ochratoxin A (OTA) in blood serum, kidney and liver of pigs have been compared. Sample clean-up was based on liquid-liquid phase extraction. The detection of OTA was accomplished with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined either with fluorescence detection (FL) or electro spray ionization (ESI+) tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS). Comparative method evaluation was based on the investigation of 82 samples of blood serum, kidney and liver originating from different regions of Serbia. The analytical results are discussed in view of the respective method validation data and the corresponding experimental protocols. In general, analytical data obtained with LC-MS-MS detection offered comparably good results in the sub-ppb concentration level indicating that the liquid chromatography electro spray tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method was more specific and sensitive for the analysis and confirmation of ochratoxin A in pig tissues than high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) method after methylation of OTA
