Delayed neutrons measurement at the MEGAPIE target
In the framework of the Neutronic and Nuclear Assessment Task Group of the
MEGAPIE experiment we measured the delayed neutron (DN) flux at the top of the
target. The measurement was proposed mainly for radioprotection purposes since
the DN flux at the top of the target has been estimated to be of the same order
of magnitude as the prompt neutron flux. Given the strong model-dependence of
DN predictions, the measurement of DN contribution to the total neutron
activity at the top of the target was thus desired. Moreover, this measurement
is complementary to the DN experiments performed at PNPI (Gatchina) on solid
lead and bismuth targets. The DN measurement at MEGAPIE was performed during
the start-up phase of the target. In this paper we present a detailed
description of the experimental setup and some preliminary results on decay

Transmittance and reflectance measurements at terahertz frequencies on a superconducting BaFe_{1.84}Co_{0.16}As_2 ultrathin film: an analysis of the optical gaps in the Co-doped BaFe_2As_2 pnictide
Here we report an optical investigation in the terahertz region of a 40 nm
ultrathin BaFeCoAs superconducting film with
superconducting transition temperature T = 17.5 K. A detailed analysis of
the combined reflectance and transmittance measurements showed that the optical
properties of the superconducting system can be described in terms of a
two-band, two-gap model. The zero temperature value of the large gap
, which seems to follow a BCS-like behavior, results to be
(0) = 17 cm. For the small gap, for which (0) = 8
cm, the temperature dependence cannot be clearly established. These gap
values and those reported in the literature for the BaFeCoAs
system by using infrared spectroscopy, when put together as a function of
T, show a tendency to cluster along two main curves, providing a unified
perspective of the measured optical gaps. Below a temperature around 20 K, the
gap-sizes as a function of T seem to have a BCS-like linear behavior, but
with different slopes. Above this temperature, both gaps show different
supra-linear behaviors
Clinical phenotypes in adult patients with bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a heterogeneous disease. This study aimed at identifying discrete groups of patients with different clinical and biological characteristics and long-term outcomes. This was a secondary analysis of five European databases of prospectively enrolled adult outpatients with bronchiectasis. Principal component and cluster analyses were performed using demographics, comorbidities, and clinical, radiological, functional and microbiological variables collected during the stable state. Exacerbations, hospitalisations and mortality during a 3-year follow-up were recorded. Clusters were externally validated in an independent cohort of patients with bronchiectasis, also investigating inflammatory markers in sputum. Among 1145 patients (median age 66 years; 40% male), four clusters were identified driven by the presence of chronic infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa or other pathogens and daily sputum: "Pseudomonas" (16%), "Other chronic infection" (24%), "Daily sputum" (33%) and "Dry bronchiectasis" (27%). Patients in the four clusters showed significant differences in terms of quality of life, exacerbations, hospitalisations and mortality during follow-up. In the validation cohort, free neutrophil elastase activity, myeloperoxidase activity and interleukin-1\u3b2 levels in sputum were significantly different among the clusters. Identification of four clinical phenotypes in bronchiectasis could favour focused treatments in future interventional studies designed to alter the natural history of the disease
Responsive Nucleic Acid-Based Organosilica Nanoparticles
The development of smart nanoparticles (NPs) that encode responsive features in the structural framework promises to extend the applications of NP-based drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic tools. New nanocarriers would ideally consist of a minimal number of biocompatible components and exhibit multiresponsive behavior to specific biomolecules, but progress is limited by the difficulty of synthesizing suitable building blocks. Through a nature-inspired approach that combines the programmability of nucleic acid interactions and solâgel chemistry, we report the incorporation of synthetic nucleic acids and analogs, as constitutive components, into organosilica NPs. We prepared different nanomaterials containing single-stranded nucleic acids that are covalently embedded in the silica network. Through the incorporation of functional nucleic acids into the organosilica framework, the particles respond to various biological, physical, and chemical inputs, resulting in detectable physicochemical changes. The one-step bottom-up approach used to prepare organosilica NPs provides multifunctional systems that combine the tunability of oligonucleotides with the stiffness, low cost, and biocompatibility of silica for different applications ranging from drug delivery to sensing
Evidence for preferences of Italian patients for physician attire
BACKGROUND: The relationship between patient and physician is a complex interaction that includes multiple factors. The objective of this study was to explore Italian patients' preferences regarding physician appearance.
METHODS: A questionnaire was developed to survey patients in different medical and surgical settings; each subject was asked to choose one picture of either a male or female physician from a selection of different attires (professional, casual, surgical scrubs, trendy, and careless). Patients were also surveyed about issues such as the presence of a name tag, hair length, trousers on women, amount of makeup, presence of tattoos, and body piercing. Statistical analysis was performed using a Chi-square test.
RESULTS: A total of 765 questionnaires (534 completed from patients waiting for an internal medicine visit and 231 for other subspecialties) were completed. The majority (45%) of patients preferred the gastroenterologist to wear a surgical scrub with a white coat. For the other specialists, patients accepted either scrubs or formal dress under a white coat (P ⤠0.05), with a name tag. Trendy attire was preferred by nine patients (1.1%). The entire sample judged it inappropriate for clinicians to have long hair, visible tattoos, body piercing, and, for women, to wear trousers and use excessive makeup.
CONCLUSION: This is the first study conducted in Italy regarding physician attire. As in other Western countries, Italian patients favor physicians in professional attire with a white coat. Wearing professional dress is part of "etiquette based medicine" and may favorably influence clinician-patient relationships and patient compliance.</br
