Thermally safe operation of a cooled semi-batch reactor: slow liquid-liquid reactions

    Get PDF
Thermally safe operation of a semi-batch reactor (SBR) implies that conditions leading to strong accumulation of unreacted reactants must be avoided. All thermal responses of a SBR, in which a slow liquid-liquid reaction takes place, can be represented in a diagram with the kinetics, cooling capacity and potential temperature rise as the keyfactors. Slow reactions taking place in the dispersed phase were found to be more prone to accumulation than reactions in the continuous phase. An overheat situation can develop after the reactants have accumulated in their ”own“ phase due to a slight overcooling

    The Willard D. Morgan archive

    Get PDF
The body of this thesis is divided into three sections; A Thesis Enfolds, A Chronology of Events, Willard D. Morgan Lecture Script , and Register. A Thesis Enfolds, A Chronology of Events. This section describes the events which took this thesis from an idea to its completion, including the successes and failures which were encountered. This section lends insight on the process and learning experience . Willard D. Morgan Lecture Script. This section is in eight parts. Each part has its own heading and footnotes and is authored by either Michael Shuter or myself. The sections include an introduction and conclusion, an introduction to Willard Morgan, Morgan\u27s positions at both Leica and LIFE, and Morgan\u27s position as first Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art. Also covered are Morgan\u27s accomplishments in the field of photographic publishing, and a special section on The Complete Photographer, an encyclopedia of photography which Morgan was general editor of. This is the actual script which was used in our presentation in partial fulfillment of our Master of Fine Art Degrees. This section represents the research which was conducted on Morgan\u27s career, and serves as a biography of his work in photography. Register. This section is a reference tool for the forty-four boxes of the Willard D. Morgan Archive which Michael Shuter and I organized. The Register contains a Sequential Index, an Alphabetical Index, and a Correspondence Index. File names (as they appear on the files in the archive) are used in addition to the file numbers we imposed on the archive. The number of photographs in each file are also included for quick reference. The Register contains background information on Morgan and the archive, in addition to instruction on effectively using the Register

Horror’s Effect on Identity in Life of Pi and Arthur Gordon Pym

    Get PDF
Both Life of Pi by Yann Martel and The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allen Poe provide climatic moments of horror that lead to a change of motivation. Specifically, I will be taking a look at one important scene from each novel: the arrival and departure of the ‘death ship’ when Arthur Gordon Pym is stranded on a slightly sunk ship and the materialization of the mystical green island that Pi comes across. With the entrance of a horror, both scenes portray a change in the narrator, a renewal then subsequent loss of hope, a moment of self-assessment that changes the young boys’ lives. I will be evaluating the effect of horror through the lens of Julia Kristeva’s “The Powers of Horror: an Essay on Abjection”. According to Kristeva, the abject refers to the human reaction (which is horror) to a threatened breakdown in meaning caused by the loss of the distinction between subject and object or between self and other. The primary example for what causes such a reaction is the corpse (which traumatically reminds us of our own materiality) which is the object of horror that changes the identities of Pi and Pym. The questions I will pursue are: Why does horror change the identities or conscious motivations of these boys? Are their reactions universal or individualized? What previous notions do they project on the horror they face

Climate Research Wageningen UR : Projects, researchers and expertise

    Get PDF
Wageningen UR focuses not only on the global climate system but also on regional and local climate phenomena, taking both scientific and social aspects into account in an integral way. Wageningen UR wants to play an effective role in the transition to a world that is both climate neutral and climate proof. Our strength is using the limited space available in our delta, in a climate-proof manner, thus providing opportunities for among others agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, recreation and living

A statutory review of adjudicators’ determinations under the Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA) by the State Administrative Tribunal and the Courts of Western Australia

The Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA) commenced on 01 January 2005. From 2005 until 30 June 2017, the Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA) was used by those seeking a resolution to payment claim disputes within the Western Australian construction industry on 1822 occasions. The statutory legislation provides three mechanisms that give rise to access in the Courts of Western Australia and the State Administrative Tribunal. This research will examine the three mechanisms
