Circumstances in which parsimony but not compatibility will be provably misleading
Phylogenetic methods typically rely on an appropriate model of how data
evolved in order to infer an accurate phylogenetic tree. For molecular data,
standard statistical methods have provided an effective strategy for extracting
phylogenetic information from aligned sequence data when each site (character)
is subject to a common process. However, for other types of data (e.g.
morphological data), characters can be too ambiguous, homoplastic or saturated
to develop models that are effective at capturing the underlying process of
change. To address this, we examine the properties of a classic but neglected
method for inferring splits in an underlying tree, namely, maximum
compatibility. By adopting a simple and extreme model in which each character
either fits perfectly on some tree, or is entirely random (but it is not known
which class any character belongs to) we are able to derive exact and explicit
formulae regarding the performance of maximum compatibility. We show that this
method is able to identify a set of non-trivial homoplasy-free characters, when
the number of taxa is large, even when the number of random characters is
large. By contrast, we show that a method that makes more uniform use of all
the data --- maximum parsimony --- can provably estimate trees in which {\em
none} of the original homoplasy-free characters support splits.Comment: 37 pages, 2 figure
1991 DA: An asteroid in a bizarre orbit
Asteroidal object 1991 DA has an orbit of high inclination, crossing the planets from Mars to Uranus. This is unique for an asteroid, but not unusual for a comet of the Halley-type: it therefore seems likely that 1991 DA is an extinct or dormant comet. Previous CCD imaging has shown no indication of a coma; spectroscopic observations of 1991 DA which lack any evidence of strong comet-like emissions are reported. Numerical integrations of the orbit of this object were performed which show that is has been remarkably stable for the past approximately 20,000 yr, but chaotic before that. This may allow a new estimate to be made of the physical lifetimes of comets
Tram-Line filtering for retinal vessel segmentation
The segmentation of the vascular network from retinal fundal images is a fundamental step in the analysis of the retina, and may be used for a number of purposes, including diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. However, due to the variability of retinal images segmentation is difficult, particularly with images of diseased retina which include significant distractors.
This paper introduces a non-linear filter for vascular segmentation, which is particularly robust against such distractors. We demonstrate results on the publicly-available STARE dataset, superior to Stare’s performance, with 57.2% of the vascular network (by length) successfully located, with 97.2% positive predictive value measured by vessel length, compared with 57% and 92.2% for Stare. The filter is also simple and computationally efficient
Painting Analysis Using Wavelets and Probabilistic Topic Models
In this paper, computer-based techniques for stylistic analysis of paintings
are applied to the five panels of the 14th century Peruzzi Altarpiece by Giotto
di Bondone. Features are extracted by combining a dual-tree complex wavelet
transform with a hidden Markov tree (HMT) model. Hierarchical clustering is
used to identify stylistic keywords in image patches, and keyword frequencies
are calculated for sub-images that each contains many patches. A generative
hierarchical Bayesian model learns stylistic patterns of keywords; these
patterns are then used to characterize the styles of the sub-images; this in
turn, permits to discriminate between paintings. Results suggest that such
unsupervised probabilistic topic models can be useful to distill characteristic

Correlation between prescribing quality and pharmaceutical costs in English primary care: national cross-sectional analysis
Background Both pharmaceutical costs and quality-indicator performance vary substantially between general practices, but little is known about the relationship between prescribing costs and quality Aim To measure the association between prescribing quality and pharmaceutical costs among English general practices Design and setting Cross-sectional observational study using data from the Quality and Outcomes Framework and the Prescribing Analysis and Cost database from all 8409 general practices in England in 2005-2006 Method Correlation between practice achievement of 26 prescribing quality indicators in eight prescribing areas and related pharmaceutical costs was examined. Results There was no significant association between the overall achievement of quality indicators and related pharmaceutical costs (P= 0.399). Mean achievement of quality indicators across all eight prescribing areas was 79.0% (standard deviation 4.4%).
