Eye movements during visual search in patients with glaucoma
Background: Glaucoma has been shown to lead to disability in many daily tasks including visual search. This study aims to determine whether the saccadic eye movements of people with glaucoma differ from those of people with normal vision, and to investigate the association between eye movements and impaired visual search.
Methods: Forty patients (mean age: 67 [SD: 9] years) with a range of glaucomatous visual field (VF) defects in both eyes (mean best eye mean deviation [MD]: –5.9 (SD: 5.4) dB) and 40 age-related people with normal vision (mean age: 66 [SD: 10] years) were timed as they searched for a series of target objects in computer displayed photographs of real world scenes. Eye movements were simultaneously recorded using an eye tracker. Average number of saccades per second, average saccade amplitude and average search duration across trials were recorded. These response variables were compared with measurements of VF and contrast sensitivity.
Results: The average rate of saccades made by the patient group was significantly smaller than the number made by controls during the visual search task (P = 0.02; mean reduction of 5.6% (95% CI: 0.1 to 10.4%). There was no difference in average saccade amplitude between the patients and the controls (P = 0.09). Average number of saccades was weakly correlated with aspects of visual function, with patients with worse contrast sensitivity (PR logCS; Spearman’s rho: 0.42; P = 0.006) and more severe VF defects (best eye MD; Spearman’s rho: 0.34; P = 0.037) tending to make less eye movements during the task. Average detection time in the search task was associated with the average rate of saccades in the patient group (Spearman’s rho = −0.65; P < 0.001) but this was not apparent in the controls.
Conclusions: The average rate of saccades made during visual search by this group of patients was fewer than those made by people with normal vision of a similar average age. There was wide variability in saccade rate in the patients but there was an association between an increase in this measure and better performance in the search task. Assessment of eye movements in individuals with glaucoma might provide insight into the functional deficits of the disease
Genetic Evidence Highlights Potential Impacts of By-Catch to Cetaceans
Incidental entanglement in fishing gear is arguably the most serious threat to many populations of small cetaceans, judging by the alarming number of captured animals. However, other aspects of this threat, such as the potential capture of mother-offspring pairs or reproductive pairs, could be equally or even more significant but have rarely been evaluated. Using a combination of demographic and genetic data we provide evidence that i) Franciscana dolphin pairs that are potentially reproductive and mother-offspring pairs form temporal bonds, and ii) are entangled simultaneously. Our results highlight potential demographic and genetic impacts of by-catch to cetacean populations: the joint entanglement of mother-offspring or reproductive pairs, compared to random individuals, might exacerbate the demographic consequences of by-catch, and the loss of groups of relatives means that significant components of genetic diversity could be lost together. Given the social nature of many odontocetes (toothed cetaceans), we suggest that these potential impacts could be rather general to the group and therefore by-catch could be more detrimental than previously considered

Ex-PRESS outcomes using mitomycin-C, Ologen alone, Ologen with 5-fluorouracil
To compare the complication rate and effectiveness of mitomycin C (MMC), Ologen alone, and Ologen with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as adjunctives with Ex-PRESS mini shunt for medically uncontrolled glaucoma. Retrospective comparative study of 59 Ex-PRESS mini shunt trabeculectomy operations coupled with Ologen implantation alone, transient MMC application or Ologen implantation with 5-FU as adjunctive treatment. Eight eyes (7 patients) received Ologen alone, 37 eyes (34 patients) received MMC, and 14 eyes (14 patients) received Ologen with 5-FU as adjunctive therapy. Baseline characteristics, adjunctive used during operation, along with outcomes including intraocular pressure (IOP), number of anti-hypertensive drops, visual acuity, and complications were documented and compared. The primary outcome was IOP at 12 months. Variables were compared with r × c Fisher tests. The Ologen only group had a significantly higher IOP at 12 months (20.5 ± 10.23 mmHg) compared with Ologen combined with 5-FU (12.2 ± 1.47 mmHg) or MMC (13.8 ± 4.37 mmHg) (p = 0.015, linear mixed model). The Ologen only cohort also had a higher re-operation rate (p = 0.01, Fisher’s Exact Test) and higher rate of bleb leak (p = 0.02, Fisher’s Exact Test). Visual acuity was similar among all three groups. 5-FU with Ologen is as effective as MMC in maintaining IOP following Ex-PRESS shunt surgery at 1 year. However, Ologen alone may not be as effective as the other two adjunctive agents
