Use of Marlex mesh with methylmethacrylate to repair large full-thickness defects after subtotal sternectomy caused by chondroma

Background. Sternal benign neoplasms are extremely rare. Chondroma is a benign tumor of cartilage and can be single or multiple. Case report. We presented a case of 28-year-old woman with chondroma of the sternum treated by "en bloc" resection of the tumor (subtotal sternectomy). The chest wall defect was repaired by the placement of Marlex mesh and metylmethacrylate ("sandwich method") for stabilization of the thoracic wall. This place was covered with pectoralis major muscle and skin. The postoperative course was uneventful and the wounds healed by primary intention. Conclusion. The functional and cosmetic results in the usage of Marlex mesh with metylmethacrylate to repair a large full-thickness defect after subtotal sternectomy caused by chondroma were good and the patient was able to resume her preoperative level of activity

    Architecture Between Landscape And Infrastructure: Tilva Roš – Red Hill Of Bor 44° 5ʹ 32.68ʹʹ N, 22° 6ʹ 04.55ʹʹ E

This paper will question contemporary contingencies of scenery, arguing that overall image of landscape holds fluidity that overcomes limits of any particular structure. It issues the post-industrial landscape of Bor, the town situated upon one of the biggest copper mining grounds in Europe with continuous infrastructural flow for the purpose of copper mining development. Relation between architecture and landscape will be interpreted through wider scope of perspective in terms of morphology, structure and infrastructure. This paper argues that infrastructure and ground should be perceived as single matter, with the aim to construct a contemporary sensibility towards perceiving nature itself

Copper Grounds: Melting Point of the City of Bor, Serbia

Abstract: This paper will question the condition of transforming and deforming of the city, both in spatial terms and in relation to duration, arguing that such transformations are layered, synthetical and, above all, not linear but elastic (reversible). It addresses two relating issues: the space of a city and the space of a motion picture. The cityscape of Bor will be discussed through recent films - Tilva Roš (The Red Hill; 2010), Beli, beli svet (White, White World; 2010) and a documentary Beli, beli Bor (White, White Pine; 2011) - depicting a particular social and physical reality within different forms of urban life. The movies are taken as case studies for establishing theoretical ground for architectural position. They offer a defined visual and philosophical interpretation of the openness of the ground: the perception of protagonists with a shifted relation towards space and time anticipating the possibilities in the social, economic and physical constraints of declining industrial and urban landscape of the settlement of Bor. The paper will be structured through three parallel topics: Scenography of shrinking, Filters of the ground and Elasticity of urban life

The crucial interest of this project is to initiate a discussion on reconsidering former architectural concepts from a contemporary critical position. Architecture in Translation aims to locate this particular place inside the modern idea by engaging the ideals of openness, movement and fluidity

    Descending necrotizing mediastinitis

Background: Descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is an acute, serious, septic disease which results from a complication of oropharyngeal infection. The disease requires a prompt diagnosis and radical surgical treatment to reduce high mortality (40%). The optimal form of mediastinal drainage remains controversial. The reason for publishing this report is both the fact that DNM is very rare and our experience preferring thoracotomy as an optimal approach to treating the disease. Case report. We reported a 34-years-old woman with DNM. The disease began as a peritonsillar abscess. After a bilateral double pleural drainage the disease worsened. In order to achieve radical mediastinal debridement and drainage, we carried out posterolateral right thoracotomy. We also had to perform left thoracotomy because of massive bleeding caused by septic erosion. There were no more reoperations. Conclusion. Aggressive surgical treatment, regardless the localization and the extent of changes is the key to success in the treatment of patients with necrotizing mediastinitis

Thoracic surgery in solving enormous elevation of the left hemidiaphragm

Background. Acquired elevation of the diaphragm is mostly the result of phrenic nerve paralysis, some of thoracic and abdominal patological states, and also some of neuromuscular diseases. Surgical treatment is rarely performed and is indicated when lung compression produces disabilitating dyspnea, and includes plication of diaphragm. The goal of this case report has been to show completely documented diagnostic procedures and surgical treatment one of rare pathological condition. Case report. A 62-year-old patient was admitted to our clinic because of surgical treatment of the enormous elevation of the left hemidiaphragm. After thoracotomy and plication of the bulging diaphragm, lung compression did not exist any more and mediastinum went back in the normal position. Conclusion. Elevation of the diaphragm rarely demands surgical correction. When it is complicated with lung compression and disabilitating dyspnea, surgical treatment has extremely useful functional effect

Transparency of scale: geographical information program (google earth) and the view from beyond

A nine-minute film, directed by architects Charles and Ray Eames, “Powers of Ten” visualized for the first time the journey through the different scales of existence - from outer space to the space of the atom. This film inspired the Keyhole Project, which, twenty years later, became Google Earth, a (non) commercial online tool for surveying the surface of Earth, making those intriguing images from the 1970s part of our everyday life. Today, as Google Earth counts more than one billion downloads per year, Felix Baumgartner experienced zoom-out mode in physical space, launching himself into the stratosphere. This new overview of the planet that is provided to us by Google Earth virtually, Felix Baumgartner for the first time experienced in physical space; he sky-jumped from the height of estimated 39,000 m, proving that one can actually see the Earth as simulated by Google Earth. Humanity gained a new glance, an overview towards the territory of Earth. This paper argues that this transformation of the nature of the vista provokes the emergence of new modes of perception, cognition and experience of space and place specific to the emerging era (thus provoking new modes of production of space). This paper raises questions regarding the case of the Google Earth program and it’s impact on spatial perception in the context of architectural discourse

Evaluation of the antibacterial effectiveness of novel copper/polypyrrole nanocomposite

A novel and effective antibacterial agent based on a combination of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and polypyrrole (PPy) is presented. By using a straightforward in situ polymerization method in water, a copper/polypyrrole (Cu/PPy) nanocomposite with spherical CuNPs, around 25 nm in diameter, uniformly dispersed throughout a granular PPy matrix, was characterized and subjected to determination of antibacterial activity toward E. coli, and S. aureus. In this survey, the synergistic engagement of various features of CuNPs and PPy against bacteria was somewhat expected. After a 24 h interaction with S. aureus, already 2 ppm of Cu/PPy with only 9.45 wt% content of Cu is acting almost completely cidal, with 99.17 % bacterial growth inhibition, while 10 ppm has a cidal value of 99.99 % at the same time. Safe and environmentally acceptable concentrations of Cu/PPy indicate that it is convenient as an antibacterial agent for wider use
