Hjemstavn som erindring i migrantlitteratur
This article focusses on the representation of homeland in two Scandinavian novels: Amal Aden’s Min drøm om frihet (2009) and Jonas Suchanek’s Do danska (2014). Both novels can be considered migrant literature, i.e., literature written by authors who have themselves experienced migration. Another thing that these novels have in common is that their authors construct the image of their original homeland through their own memories. Typically, the idealizing memories are reinforced as the characters are confronted with negative experiences in the new country, where they do not feel assimilated, as we can see it in Aden’s novel. In Suchanek’s novel, nostalgia plays an important role, namely the historical fact that his homeland has actually disappeared (the protagonist emigrated from the communist Czechoslovakia and returns to a completely new post-revolutionary country). Both novels demonstrate the concept of homeland not only as a geographical place, but also in terms of the cultural aspects associated with it, be it friends or food. At the same time, the concept of polygamy of place, which is often mentioned in the context of globalization, does not seem to work very well. Especially in Aden’s novel, the protagonist’s relationship with her original homeland and the new homeland oscillates between topophilia and topophobia. Essential to the memories of the homeland, then, are the triggers that take the characters in both novels back to a time before their migration, creating a sense of discomfort and nostalgia

Method of detecting mold toxin infected grains
A method of detecting mold toxin infected grains. The method involves obtaining a gaseous sample from the grain which is representative of the volatiles which are produced within the grain, and thereafter determining by gas chromatographic analysis of said gaseous sample, if the grain contains volatiles known to be produced by mold toxin infected grains
What Effect Should State Law Have in Defining Personal Injury Damages for Purposes of I.R.C. Section 104(a)(2) Exclusion
In Roemer v. Commissioner, the Ninth Circuit turned to California law to locate the meaning of personal injury as used in section 104(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code. This Comment analyzes that court\u27s decision and compares the use of state law within the tax code with its use in certain other federal statutory schemes. The author finds that although state law can be useful and perhaps accurate in deciphering Congressional intent, a key policy behind the tax code, namely uniformity, makes the sole use of state law in defining terms within the tax code incompatible with the congressional object
Polarographic investigation of an unusual contaminant in trichlorobiphenyl
An interest in polarography of organic compounds developed because of the need for an instrumental technique to determine unstable chlorine compounds in askarels used in the electrical industry for dielectric fluids. A chance contamination of trichlorobiphenyl used to impregnate capacitors caused the electrical industry untimely failures in their devices in 1956. These compounds break down under the influence of heat and electrical stress to form a buildup of conducting species which ultimately cause capacitors to fail. (1) Several test methods have been developed,( 2) all of which involve anionic hydrolysis of the unstable compounds and a potentiometric titration of the resulting chloride ion. One of these tests has become the tentative standard of the ASTM.(3) Westinghouse workers have done work of a similar nature, and one of their tests was published in 1958.(l) Since polarity of a chlorine atom on an organic molecule correlates with its susceptibility to anionic attack and this further correlates with the relative ease of polarographic reduction, it was of interest to study this means as a possible test for detection of these reactive compounds
Tailor-made nanocrystals for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases
In the present work, the NC of three poorly water-soluble antioxidants, BI-6C9, hesperetin and rutin, were prepared, characterized, and tested in suitable cell culture models. In addition, the production was optimized to obtain tailor-made NC for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases. These should be formulated to increase the solubility and thus bioavailability of the antioxidants used, while meeting the requirements of different administration routes regarding particle size, physical stability, and the final formulation.
The synthesized compound, BI-6C9, was aimed to be converted into a formulation suitable for i.v. application in a resource-saving manner. This was successfully realized by using a small scale BM process in a batch size of 2 mL. A time and resource-saving pre-screening of four stabilizers (SDS, PLC, Tween 80, Span 20) was performed by microscopy, where SDS was identified to be the most suitable stabilizer. Then, BI-6C9 was successfully converted to NC with an average particle size of about 600 nm applying a milling time of 24 h. However, only the stabilizer Tween 80 is approved as save for intracortical or intracerebral application. By optimizing the milling time to 90 h, a Tween 80-stabilized nanosuspension was successfully produced and comparable to the SDS formulation regarding particle size and stability over seven days of storage. Also, in a cell culture model of oxidative stress-induced neuronal cell death, both nanosuspensions showed the same protective dose-response curve as a BI-6C9 solution in DMSO. This means that both NC formulations have reached their highest pharmacological efficacy because a formulation cannot become more effective than its solution. In addition, as an advantage, no harmful solvents were used for the cell culture studies and, especially, for a possible in-vivo application. By optimizing the preparation and stabilization with Tween 80 and SDS, tailor-made i.v. or orally applicable NC formulations were successfully developed for the treatment of neuronal oxidative stress
Rider v. County of San Diego: Special Districts and Special Taxes under Proposition 13
The voters of California passed initiative Proposition 13 in 1978. This initiative limited the ability of state and local taxing authorities to raise revenue. The courts were left with the difficult task of interpreting that initiative as applied to numerous factual situations, a task made more difficult by the lack of any meaningful legislative history. When San Diego County sought to finance certain judicial and criminal facilities with a sales tax increase, the California Supreme Court had already lain out an analysis of Proposition 13 that suggested the new tax was constitutionally imposed. However, upon challenge in Rider v. County of San Diego, the California Supreme Court struck the tax down as violative of Proposition 13. This Note analyzes that decision, the precedents that suggested the tax was constitutional, and the concerns raised by the decision. This Note illustrates the uncertainty inherent in the initiative process and the obstacles which local governments face when attempting to manage their revenue-gathering affairs
