Eta Carinae across the 2003.5 Minimum: Analysis in the visible and near infrared spectral region
We present an analysis of the visible through near infrared spectrum of Eta
Carinae and its ejecta obtained during the "Eta Carinae Campaign with the UVES
at the ESO VLT". This is a part of larger effort to present a complete Eta
Carinae spectrum, and extends the previously presented analyses with the
HST/STIS in the UV (1240-3159 A) to 10,430 A. The spectrum in the mid and near
UV is characterized by the ejecta absorption. At longer wavelengths, stellar
wind features from the central source and narrow emission lines from the
Weigelt condensations dominate the spectrum. However, narrow absorption lines
from the circumstellar shells are present. This paper provides a description of
the spectrum between 3060 and 10,430 A, including line identifications of the
ejecta absorption spectrum, the emission spectrum from the Weigelt
condensations and the P-Cygni stellar wind features. The high spectral
resolving power of VLT/UVES enables equivalent width measurements of atomic and
molecular absorption lines for elements with no transitions at the shorter
wavelengths. However, the ground based seeing and contributions of nebular
scattered radiation prevent direct comparison of measured equivalent widths in
the VLT/UVES and HST/STIS spectra. Fortunately, HST/STIS and VLT/UVES have a
small overlap in wavelength coverage which allows us to compare and adjust for
the difference in scattered radiation entering the instruments' apertures. This
paper provides a complete online VLT/UVES spectrum with line identifications
and a spectral comparison between HST/STIS and VLT/UVES between 3060 and 3160

Dust Formation and He II 4686 emission in the Dense Shell of the Peculiar Type Ib Supernova 2006jc
We present evidence for the formation of dust grains in an unusual Type Ib SN
based on late-time spectra of SN 2006jc. The progenitor suffered an LBV-like
outburst just 2 yr earlier, and we propose that the dust formation is a
consequence of the SN blast wave overtaking that LBV-like shell. The key
evidence for dust formation is (a) the appearance of a red/near-IR continuum
source fit by 1600 K graphite grains, and (b) fading of the redshifted sides of
He I emission lines, yielding progressively more asymmetric blueshifted lines
as dust obscures receding material. This provides the strongest case yet for
dust formation in any SN Ib/c. Both developments occurred between 51 and 75 d
after peak, while other SNe observed to form dust did so after a few hundred
days. Geometric considerations indicate that dust formed in the dense swept-up
shell between the forward and reverse shocks, and not in the freely expanding
SN ejecta. Rapid cooling leading to dust formation may have been aided by
extremely high shell densities, as indicated by He I line ratios. The brief
epoch of dust formation is accompanied by He II 4686 emission and enhanced
X-ray emission. These clues suggest that the unusual dust formation in this
object was not due to properties of the SN itself, but instead -- like most
peculiarities of SN 2006jc -- was a consequence of the dense environment
created by an LBV-like eruption 2 yr before the SN.Comment: ApJ, accepted. added some discussion and 2 figures, better title,

Difference in attitudes toward Crew Resource Management based on nationality
The E-3A Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft operates with multinational crewmembers from 15 different nations on 12 different aircrew positions. Given this non-standard cultural environment, the authors explored the differences in the attitude toward Crew Resource Management (CRM), based on nationality, and how these differences could be used as a predictor for other nationalities attitudes. The potential benefit of this study may be, that CRM methods could be developed further to either work universally, independent to national or cultural backgrounds, or be adjusted for different cultural contexts in order to be even more effective. Primary data was gathered through a survey questionnaire issued to aircrew members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) E-3A Component. The survey focused on key attitudes in a CRM environment such as teamwork ability, criticism appreciation, and open mindedness; taken from standardized questions based on Hofstede and Minkov’s (2013) Values Survey Module (VSM). Analyzing the gathered values, revealed that in fact differences between various nations exist. Comparing the cultural dimensions calculated for the participating nations in this study did not allow for a correlation of attitude differences to certain index patterns. Significantstatistical differences could be detected in three of the five questions, indicating that national culture and the attitude toward CRM does correlate and hence needs to be addressed in CRM training. CRM is not perfect and is, as always reiterated, a constantly evolving construct. One part of it, in the now globalized and more and more interrelated world, is to deal with different baselines that each culture brings into this coherent model

Relational Contracts and Trust in a High-Tech Industry
We study how informal buyer-supplier relationships in the German automotive industry affect procurement. Using unique data from a survey focusing on these, we show that more trust, the belief that the trading partner acts to maintain the mutual relationship, is associated with both higher quality of the automotive parts and more competition among suppliers. Yet both effects hold only for parts involving unsophisticated technology, not when technology is sophisticated. We rationalize these findings within a relational contracting model that critically focuses on changes in the bargaining power, due to differences in the costs of switching suppliers
Chandra HETGS Multi-Phase Spectroscopy of the Young Magnetic O Star theta^1 Orionis C
We report on four Chandra grating observations of the oblique magnetic
rotator theta^1 Ori C (O5.5 V) covering a wide range of viewing angles with
respect to the star's 1060 G dipole magnetic field. We employ line-width and
centroid analyses to study the dynamics of the X-ray emitting plasma in the
circumstellar environment, as well as line-ratio diagnostics to constrain the
spatial location, and global spectral modeling to constrain the temperature
distribution and abundances of the very hot plasma. We investigate these
diagnostics as a function of viewing angle and analyze them in conjunction with
new MHD simulations of the magnetically channeled wind shock mechanism on
theta^1 Ori C. This model fits all the data surprisingly well, predicting the
temperature, luminosity, and occultation of the X-ray emitting plasma with

Variable Unidentified Emission Near 6307 AA in Eta Carinae
We have discovered a conspicuous unidentified variable feature near 6307 AA
in the spectrum of Eta Carinae which is spatially unresolved from the central
star and its wind (r < 200--300 AU). It is significant for two reasons: such
prominent unidentified lines are now rare in this object, and this feature
varies strongly and systematically. It exhibits a combination of
characteristics which, so far as we know are unique in Eta Carinae's spectrum.
It may provide insights into the recurrent spectroscopic events and the star's

Multi-epoch Doppler tomography and polarimetry of QQ Vul
We present multi-epoch high-resolution spectroscopy and photoelectric polarimetry of the long-period polar (AM Herculis star) QQ Vul. The blue emission lines show several distinct components, the sharpest of which can unequivocally be assigned to the illuminated hemisphere of the secondary star and used to trace its orbital motion. This narrow emission line can be used in combination with Nai-absorption lines from the photosphere of the companion to build a stable long-term ephemeris for the star: inferior conjunction of the companion occurs at HJD = 244 8446.4710(5)+E×0. d 15452011(11). The polarization curves are dissimilar at different epochs, thus supporting the idea of fundamental changes of the accretion geometry, e.g. between one- and two-pole accretion modes. The linear polarization pulses display a random scatter by 0.2 phase units and are not suitable for the determination of the binary period. The polarization data suggest that the magnetic (dipolar) axis has a co-latitude of 23 ◦ , an azimuth of −50 ◦, and an orbital inclination between 50 ◦ and 70 ◦. The FORS Deep Field: Field selection, photometric observations and photometric catalog
The FORS Deep Field project is a multi-colour, multi-object spectroscopic
investigation of an approx. 7 times 7 region near the south galactic pole based
mostly on observations carried out with the FORS instruments attached to the
VLT telescopes. It includes the QSO Q 0103-260 (z = 3.36). The goal of this
study is to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of
galaxies in the young Universe. In this paper the field selection, the
photometric observations, and the data reduction are described. The source
detection and photometry of objects in the FORS Deep Field is discussed in
detail. A combined B and I selected UBgRIJKs photometric catalog of 8753
objects in the FDF is presented and its properties are briefly discussed. The
formal 50% completeness limits for point sources, derived from the co-added
images, are 25.64, 27.69, 26.86, 26.68, 26.37, 23.60 and 21.57 in U, B, g, R,
I, J and Ks (Vega-system), respectively. A comparison of the number counts in
the FORS Deep Field to those derived in other deep field surveys shows very

Synthesis and structural characterization of a mimetic membrane-anchored prion protein
During pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) an abnormal form (PrPSc) of the host encoded prion protein (PrPC) accumulates in insoluble fibrils and plaques. The two forms of PrP appear to have identical covalent structures, but differ in secondary and tertiary structure. Both PrPC and PrPSc have glycosylphospatidylinositol (GPI) anchors through which the protein is tethered to cell membranes. Membrane attachment has been suggested to play a role in the conversion of PrPC to PrPSc, but the majority of in vitro studies of the function, structure, folding and stability of PrP use recombinant protein lacking the GPI anchor. In order to study the effects of membranes on the structure of PrP, we synthesized a GPI anchor mimetic (GPIm), which we have covalently coupled to a genetically engineered cysteine residue at the C-terminus of recombinant PrP. The lipid anchor places the protein at the same distance from the membrane as does the naturally occurring GPI anchor. We demonstrate that PrP coupled to GPIm (PrP-GPIm) inserts into model lipid membranes and that structural information can be obtained from this membrane-anchored PrP. We show that the structure of PrP-GPIm reconstituted in phosphatidylcholine and raft membranes resembles that of PrP, without a GPI anchor, in solution. The results provide experimental evidence in support of previous suggestions that NMR structures of soluble, anchor-free forms of PrP represent the structure of cellular, membrane-anchored PrP. The availability of a lipid-anchored construct of PrP provides a unique model to investigate the effects of different lipid environments on the structure and conversion mechanisms of PrP
Eta Carinae and the Luminous Blue Variables
We evaluate the place of Eta Carinae amongst the class of luminous blue
variables (LBVs) and show that the LBV phenomenon is not restricted to
extremely luminous objects like Eta Car, but extends luminosities as low as
log(L/Lsun) = 5.4 - corresponding to initial masses ~25 Msun, and final masses
as low as ~10-15 Msun. We present a census of S Doradus variability, and
discuss basic LBV properties, their mass-loss behaviour, and whether at maximum
light they form pseudo-photospheres. We argue that those objects that exhibit
giant Eta Car-type eruptions are most likely related to the more common type of
S Doradus variability. Alternative atmospheric models as well as
sub-photospheric models for the instability are presented, but the true nature
of the LBV phenomenon remains as yet elusive. We end with a discussion on the
evolutionary status of LBVs - highlighting recent indications that some LBVs
may be in a direct pre-supernova state, in contradiction to the standard
