    AMORE - Mission concept overview for a progressively independent and self-sustainable lunar habitat

    Throughout the last decade a renewed interest for lunar space exploration has been expressed through the announcements of many ambitious missions such as Artemis. Annually the Space Station Design Workshop (SSDW) tasks students and young professionals to design a space station concept in a con-current engineering environment. In line with the elevated interest on the Moon this year's SSDW was centred around a self-sustainable lunar habitat. This paper presents the conceptual design of Team Blue at the SSDW 2021. Advanced Moon Operations and Resource Extraction (AMORE) is conceptu-alized as a public-private cooperation for the creation of a lunar platform that acts as an outpost for human exploration and robotic In-situ Resources Utilization (ISRU). AMORE’s proposed location is near the rim of Shackleton Crater at the Lunar South Pole. This location provides opportunities in science and ISRU and favourable sun coverage and thermal conditions. The terrain offers a natural shield for debris and storage advantages for ISRU. The mission architecture allows for incremental crew size increase through a modular dome structure, an initial prioritization of ISRU and a sustainable resource management strategy. Based on the identified system requirements, the initial configuration envisions one core module and two modular structures that would serve as greenhouses or living spaces. The phasing of the base assembly is designed to allow for adequate conditions of an increasing crew size capacity. The greenhouse modules are designed to provide all required oxygen and most required food supply. The modules are constructed using lightweight inflatable structures, while a regolith shell will provide radiation as well as thermal and micrometeorite protection. For reliable communication, a cus-tom relay network named Lunar Earth Telecommand Telemetry Relay (LETTER) is proposed. The mis-sion architecture analysis includes several methods to financially utilize the mission. These include a range of services on the lunar surface such as training facilities for deep space missions, leasing habitats to other Moon explorers, and performing scientific and technological demonstrations. A variety of rovers will be used throughout the mission that will assist in various aspects. In addition to this, a scalable hybrid power generation system that utilizes the abundant sunlight and nuclear energy assures a suffi-cient power supply throughout the entire mission lifetime. This research presents a holistic architecture for a Moon base, which provides an approach to initially utilize the Moon. Within this context, the mission concept is primarily based on already existing or currently in-development technologies.     vPIF-1 is an insulin-like antiferroptotic viral peptide

    Iridoviridae, such as the lymphocystis disease virus-1 (LCDV-1) and other viruses, encode viral insulin-like peptides (VILPs) which are capable of triggering insulin receptors (IRs) and insulin-like growth factor receptors. The homology of VILPs includes highly conserved disulfide bridges. However, the binding affinities to IRs were reported to be 200- to 500-fold less effective compared to the endogenous ligands. We therefore speculated that these peptides also have noninsulin functions. Here, we report that the LCDV-1 VILP can function as a potent and highly specific inhibitor of ferroptosis. Induction of cell death by the ferroptosis inducers erastin, RSL3, FIN56, and FINO2 and nonferroptotic necrosis produced by the thioredoxin-reductase inhibitor ferroptocide were potently prevented by LCDV-1, while human insulin had no effect. Fas-induced apoptosis, necroptosis, mitotane-induced cell death and growth hormone-releasing hormone antagonist-induced necrosis were unaffected, suggesting the specificity to ferroptosis inhibition by the LCDV-1 VILP. Mechanistically, we identified the viral C-peptide to be required for inhibition of lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis inhibition, while the human C-peptide exhibited no antiferroptotic properties. In addition, the deletion of the viral C-peptide abolishes radical trapping activity in cell-free systems. We conclude that iridoviridae, through the expression of insulin-like viral peptides, are capable of preventing ferroptosis. In analogy to the viral mitochondrial inhibitor of apoptosis and the viral inhibitor of RIP activation (vIRA) that prevents necroptosis, we rename the LCDV-1 VILP a viral peptide inhibitor of ferroptosis-1. Finally, our findings indicate that ferroptosis may function as a viral defense mechanism in lower organisms

    Die explosive Verbreitung des Corona-Virus über die Welt brachte ein Realexperiment globaler Dimension mit offenem Ausgang hervor. Gesellschaften formieren sich, kosmopolitisch verschränkt, als Hygienegesellschaften. Zwischen striktem Lockdown und minimaler Begrenzung gehen sie je eigene experimentelle Wege. Dabei wird der Raum des Experimentellen bisher eher defensiv gestaltet, was in der Konsequenz zur Begrenzung experimenteller Räume sowie zur schleichenden Delegitimierung von Kontrollpolitiken der Pandemie führt. Die These dieses Beitrags lautet, dass solche Legitimationsprobleme umso eher gelöst werden können, je eher Strukturen resilienten Experimentierens entworfen und institutionalisiert werden. Ein wichtiges Ergebnis der Überlegungen ist, dass die resiliente Gestaltung experimenteller Räume zur Bewältigung solchen Krisengeschehens nur gelingen kann, wenn neben top-down verordneten Kontrollen sich eine bottom- up-Kultur sozialen Experimentierens entfalten kann. Dies setzt auf Seiten der Zivilgesellschaft ebenso wie von staatlicher Seite die Fähigkeit und den Willen zu Partizipation und Kooperation voraus. Entsprechende Ansatzpunkte werden dafür identifiziert. The dynamic spread of the corona virus has triggered an open-ended real-world experiment of global dimensions. Being under siege by Corona Pandemic, societies are forming themselves as hygiene societies. While cosmopolitically intertwined, they create their own experimental paths, changing between strict lockdown and minimal intervention strategies. With regard to experimental spaces, disease policies still follow a defensive strategy. This leads not only to the limitation of experimental processes but rather to a creeping delegitimization of health control policies. This paper stresses that societies could better cope with urging legitimation problems if structures of resilient experimentation would be designed and appropriately institutionalized. Moreover, implementing resilient designs of experimental spaces, to successfully cope with pandemic crises, requires a vivid bottom-up culture of social experimentation to complement current top-down control measures. However, this presupposes the willingness as well as the capability to participate and cooperate on both sides, the civil society and the state.     Coating stress analysis and compensation for iridium based X-ray mirrors

    International audienceIridium-based coatings for mirrors of X-ray telescopes are studied. In particular, stress induced deformation is characterized and shown to be compressive and equal to -1786 MPa. Two methods for stress compensation are then studied. One relies on the deposition of silica on the back surface of the substrate and a second one relies on the deposition of a chromium sublayer. Advantages and drawbacks of each of these techniques are presented

    Two Statistical Tools for Assessing Functionality and Protein Characteristics of Different Fava Bean (Vicia faba L.) Ingredients

    Fava bean (Vicia faba L.) is a promising source of proteins that can be potentially used as nutritional and/or functional agents for industrial food applications. Fava ingredients are industrially produced, modified, and utilized for food applications. Their processing conditions influence physico-chemical protein properties that further impact ingredient functionality. To design a functionally suitable ingredient, an understanding of the interrelationships between different properties is essential. Hence, this work aimed to assess two statistical analytical tools, Pearson’s correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), for investigating the role of the process conditions of fava ingredients on their functional and protein properties. Fava concentrates were processed by pH (2, 4, 6.4 and 11), temperature (55, 75 and 95 ∘C) and treatment duration (30 and 360 min) into different modified ingredients. These were utilized under two application conditions (pH 4 and 7), and their foam and emulsion properties as well as their ingredient characteristics (charge, solubility, and intrinsic fluorescence) were measured. The results show that foam and emulsion properties are not correlated to each other. They are associated with different protein and non-protein attributes as fava concentrate is a multi-component matrix. Importantly, it is found that the results from the two statistical tools are not fully comparable but do complement each other. This highlights that both statistical analytical tools are equally important for a comprehensive understanding of the impact of process conditions on different properties and the interrelationships between them. Therefore, it is recommended to use Pearson’s correlation and principal component analysis in future investigations of new plant-based proteins
