    The Flipped Classroom: A Twist On Teaching

    The traditional classroom has utilized the “I Do”, “We Do”, “You Do” as a strategy for teaching for years.  The flipped classroom truly flips that strategy.  The teacher uses “You Do”, “We Do”, “I Do” instead.  Homework, inquiry, and investigation happen in the classroom.  At home students participate in preparation work including watching videos, PowerPoint’s, and completing readings.  After completing the preparation work, students arrive in class ready to start solving problems, analyzing text, or investigating solutions.  The flipped classroom is fairly new in the teaching field as a strategy for teaching.  It has been used by teachers from elementary school to graduate school.  As with most strategies, the flipped classroom has a variety of ways to implement in the classroom.  This article is a case study of the flipped classroom.  It reviews and provides research on the implementation of the flipped classroom.  In addition, the article provides a variety of implementation methods and tools to be utilized in a flipped classroom.  As with all teaching strategies there are advantages and disadvantages to the flipped classroom which are explained as well

    Utilizing Online Exams: A Case Study

    Technology has opened a wide range of possibilities for the college classroom.  Thus, the classroom has changed in a variety of ways.  Some courses have been converted to fully online courses.  Students and instructors do not have any face-to-face contact in these courses.  Other courses have converted a portion of their courses to online.  These classes are generally referred to as Hybrid classes.  Students and instructors meet face-to-face for a portion of the course and complete online assignments for the remainder of the course.  Some other courses have maintained their face-to-face course but have integrated technology into those courses.   Instructors have utilized a variety of technologies that include but are not limited to:  Live Chats, Threaded Discussions – Forums, Powerpoint Presentations, Email, Videos, Software, Spreadsheets, Word Processors, Online Portals, Electronic Portfolios/Projects, Online Exams. This is a case study of the implementation of online exams in a traditional classroom.  Students are given a paper and pencil exam that has been utilized previously in other courses as the midterm.  Then an online exam was utilized in the courses.  The case study looks at the success of the exam from the point of view of the students and instructors.  Students overwhelmingly indicated that the online exam was superior to the paper exam. Students indicated that the online exams provided an opportunity for students to complete the exam at a time that was best for them.  They were able to pick a time that reduced anxiety.  The online exam also provided immediate feedback on how they did.  Faculty indicated that although the online exam does have a few glitches and there are concerns about cheating, it was effective and proved useful.  Further studies need to be done regarding the online exam to assure that it is an accurate evaluation of student learning

    New Product Development as well as Research and Development projects tend to be inherently risky investments.  Most MNC’s today have great latitude in choosing site and country locations to build or contract Research or Development projects.  MNC R&D risks, corporate wide, can be moderated via a diversification of NPD/R&D projects across multiple cultures and countries.  In fact there is some evidence that R&D global diversification can generate synergies.  (Fast track projects that work around the clock via work being done in three locations each 8 hours off from the other.) Foreign R&D facilities can help serve as outposts to facilitate the entrance into strategic foreign markets. This paper attempts to develop decision methodologies for allocating NPD/R&D globally with the goal of both reducing risks and increasing global competitiveness

    Educators Need To Go Back To The Basics

    Educators have a responsibility to not only their students as well as their institution but to society as a whole to provide the best education possible for each and every student.  The burden placed on educators is heavy but the implications are boundless.  Therefore, it is vital for educators to be good at what they do.  Surveys of schools across the United States indicate that a substantial group of educators at all levels lack the skills in basic education.  It is necessary for educators at all levels to successfully master the five basic guidelines of teaching in order to be successful.   The five guidelines for all educators are:#1 Know your Subject, Don’t be a Know it All #2 Be “With It”#3 Be A “Tech-Y” #4 Be in Control of the Class, not Controlling #5 Be Friendly, Not their Friend

    CT Automated Exposure Control Using A Generalized Detectability Index

    Purpose Identifying an appropriate tube current setting can be challenging when using iterative reconstruction due to the varying relationship between spatial resolution, contrast, noise, and dose across different algorithms. This study developed and investigated the application of a generalized detectability index (d\u27gen) to determine the noise parameter to input to existing automated exposure control (AEC) systems to provide consistent image quality (IQ) across different reconstruction approaches. Methods This study proposes a task‐based automated exposure control (AEC) method using a generalized detectability index (d\u27gen). The proposed method leverages existing AEC methods that are based on a prescribed noise level. The generalized d\u27gen metric is calculated using lookup tables of task‐based modulation transfer function (MTF) and noise power spectrum (NPS). To generate the lookup tables, the American College of Radiology CT accreditation phantom was scanned on a multidetector CT scanner (Revolution CT, GE Healthcare) at 120 kV and tube current varied manually from 20 to 240 mAs. Images were reconstructed using a reference reconstruction algorithm and four levels of an in‐house iterative reconstruction algorithm with different regularization strengths (IR1–IR4). The task‐based MTF and NPS were estimated from the measured images to create lookup tables of scaling factors that convert between d\u27gen and noise standard deviation. The performance of the proposed d\u27gen‐AEC method in providing a desired IQ level over a range of iterative reconstruction algorithms was evaluated using the American College of Radiology (ACR) phantom with elliptical shell and using a human reader evaluation on anthropomorphic phantom images. Results The study of the ACR phantom with elliptical shell demonstrated reasonable agreement between the d\u27gen predicted by the lookup table and d\u27 measured in the images, with a mean absolute error of 15% across all dose levels and maximum error of 45% at the lowest dose level with the elliptical shell. For the anthropomorphic phantom study, the mean reader scores for images resulting from the d\u27gen‐AEC method were 3.3 (reference image), 3.5 (IR1), 3.6 (IR2), 3.5 (IR3), and 2.2 (IR4). When using the d\u27gen‐AEC method, the observers’ IQ scores for the reference reconstruction were statistical equivalent to the scores for IR1, IR2, and IR3 iterative reconstructions (P \u3e 0.35). The d\u27gen‐AEC method achieved this equivalent IQ at lower dose for the IR scans compared to the reference scans. Conclusions A novel AEC method, based on a generalized detectability index, was investigated. The proposed method can be used with some existing AEC systems to derive the tube current profile for iterative reconstruction algorithms. The results provide preliminary evidence that the proposed d\u27gen‐AEC can produce similar IQ across different iterative reconstruction approaches at different dose levels

    In this commentary, we will review some of the early efforts aimed at understanding the role of the enteric microbiota in the causality of inflammatory bowel diseases. By examining these studies and drawing on our own experiences bridging clinical gastroenterology and microbial ecology as part of the NIH-funded Human Microbiome Project (Turnbaugh et al., 2007), we hope to help define some of the “growing pains” that have hampered these initial efforts. It is our sincere hope that this discussion will help advance future efforts in this area by identifying current challenges and limitations and by suggesting strategies to overcome these obstacles
