The Adaptive,Real-Time Instrumentation System for Tread ImbalanaceCorrection (ARTISTIC) was developed to provide real-timegait feedback through audio, visual, and haptic cues.These cues are meant to aid in correcting asymmetric gait.Previous testing of the ARTISTIC showed that subjectselection of a preferred feedback cue was successful incausing real-time gait disturbance in subjects with normalgait. This research will validate the ARTISTIC for real-timegait correction in subjects with gait abnormalities,preferably with lower limb prosthetics. Improvements willbe made to the system to make feedback more intuitive.The Android application will also be expanded to includeadditional functionality for feedback types.Figure 2. J Prosthet Orthot. 2010; 22:31-36VerificationThe ARTISTIC must be verified against equipment in amotion analysis lab (MAL). The Lower ExtremityAmbulation Feedback System (LEAFS), a predecessor tothe ARTISTIC, was verified against equipment in themotion lab at Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT1. Itwas shown that the LEAFS was capable of identifyingstance time with a low-bias error. A similar verification forthe ARTISTIC will confirm its accuracy in determiningstance time asymmetry.The ARTISTIC integrates a microcontroller, Bluetoothreceiver and Android smartphone to process gait dataand send feedback to the user. The purpose of thisresearch is to validate the effectiveness of the ARTISTICin assisting subjects whose gait has been characterizedas abnormal. Improvements on the design of theARTISTIC will be made to make the system more intuitiveand comfortable.TestingFeedback Testing:Three methods of feedback will be tested and comparedto determine an optimal feedback protocol:- Negative Feedback: relays cues about prior steps- Positive Feedback: relays cues before step is taken- Hybrid Feedback: combines positive and negativeIt is hypothesized that negative feedback will work best forsubjects with slight asymmetry and that positive, moreaggressive feedback will be most effective for larger gaitasymmetries.Test Subjects:Testing will be conducted on subjects with lower limbprosthetics. To make the study more robust, subjects withboth below and above the knee prosthetics will beselected.
