The use of measurements of hCG and other pregnancy-associated proteins and steroids in the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy

    Get PDF
The measurement of serum of urinary hCG is commonly used to make or exclude the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy in women presenting with symptoms suspicious of ectopic pregnancy. Detection of depressed hCG levels is indicative of early pregnancy failure. Depressed serum levels of proteins of hormone of trophoblastic, ovarian or endometrial origin make the diagnosis of ectopic gestation more likely, whilst high values are likely to exclude the possibility of this condition.peer-reviewe

On the influence of the plasma generated by comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter's magnetic field

    Get PDF
The impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter has created a variety of magnetospheric plasmas which were detected by their electromagnetic emissions. By means of the Dessler-Parker-Sckopke relation we estimate the perturbation of Jupiter’s magnetic field. It appears that the produced plasma may explain the observed decrease of UV lines in Io’s torus

A reduced order variational multiscale approach for turbulent flows

    Get PDF
The purpose of this work is to present different reduced order model strategies starting from full order simulations stabilized using a residual-based variational multiscale (VMS) approach. The focus is on flows with moderately high Reynolds numbers. The reduced order models (ROMs) presented in this manuscript are based on a POD-Galerkin approach. Two different reduced order models are presented, which differ on the stabilization used during the Galerkin projection. In the first case, the VMS stabilization method is used at both the full order and the reduced order levels. In the second case, the VMS stabilization is used only at the full order level, while the projection of the standard Navier-Stokes equations is performed instead at the reduced order level. The former method is denoted as consistent ROM, while the latter is named non-consistent ROM, in order to underline the different choices made at the two levels. Particular attention is also devoted to the role of inf-sup stabilization by means of supremizers in ROMs based on a VMS formulation. Finally, the developed methods are tested on a numerical benchmark. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

We describe some of the challenges of particle accelerator control, highlight recent advances in neural network techniques, discuss some promising avenues for incorporating neural networks into particle accelerator control systems, and describe a neural network-based control system that is being developed for resonance control of an RF electron gun at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility, including initial experimental results from a benchmark controller.Comment: 21 p

Uncertainty budget in the measurement of typical airborne number, surface area and mass particle distributions

The effects of particulate matter on environment and public health have been widely studied in recent years. A number of studies in the medical field have tried to identify the specific effect on human health of particulate exposure, but agreement amongst these studies on the relative importance of the particles’ size and its origin with respect to health effects is still lacking. Nevertheless, air quality standards are moving, as the epidemiological attention, towards greater focus on the smaller particles. Current air quality standards only regulate the mass of particulate matter less than 10 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). The most reliable method used in measuring Total Suspended Particles (TSP), PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 is the gravimetric method since it directly measures PM concentration, guaranteeing an effective traceability to international standards. This technique however, neglects the possibility to correlate short term intra-day variations of atmospheric parameters that can influence ambient particle concentration and size distribution (emission strengths of particle sources, temperature, relative humidity, wind direction and speed and mixing height) as well as human activity patterns that may also vary over time periods considerably shorter than 24 hours. A continuous method to measure the number size distribution and total number concentration in the range 0.014 – 20 μm is the tandem system constituted by a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). In this paper, an uncertainty budget model of the measurement of airborne particle number, surface area and mass size distributions is proposed and applied for several typical aerosol size distributions. The estimation of such an uncertainty budget presents several difficulties due to i) the complexity of the measurement chain, ii) the fact that SMPS and APS can properly guarantee the traceability to the International System of Measurements only in terms of number concentration. In fact, the surface area and mass concentration must be estimated on the basis of separately determined average density and particle morphology. A reduced order model for the simulation of mooring cable dynamics

In this paper the feasibility of a reduced order model (ROM) for the hydroelastic analysis of mooring lines is analysed. The local response of a piece of cable is studied through high fidelity fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations. The high fidelity model is built by coupling a computational structural dynamics (CSD) solver with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver using the approach of software components. The ROM is designed in such a way that it can be added to any beam element from a standard CSD solver. From the outside only the beam degrees of freedoms (DOFs) can be seen, the ROM DOFs are all internal. The local response of the cable is analysed and the feasibility of the ROM is discusse
