    Spread and antibiotic resistance profile of pathogens isolated from human and hospital wastewater in Ouagadougou

    Background: The discharge of improperly treated hospital landfill presents an enormous public health risk. In Burkina Faso, the management of hospital’s wastewaters and the current antibiotic susceptibility of clinically relevant isolates need to be determined, because the multi-drug resistant isolates have been previously described in hospital settings. The aim of this study was to determine antibiotic resistance profile of isolates circulating in Ouagadougou.Methods: The biochemical characterization of the isolates was carried out by tests from the API 20E test and completed with molecular characterization by simple PCR. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was determined using the recommendations of CA-SFM 2019.Results: The hospital wastewaters do not undergo any treatment before been discharged into the environment. A total of 171 presumed isolates of Salmonella spp < /em>, Pseudomonas spp < /em>., and Escherichia coli were identified in this study. These isolates derived from environment (n=19) and clinical (n=152). These isolates were resistant to Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (95.32%), Cefoxitin (72.51%), Ceftazidime (78.94%), Cefepime (80.71%), Tobramycin (59.64%), Gentamicin (42.10%), Nalidixic acid (68.42%), Norfloxacin (59.06%), Ciprofloxacin (56.14%), imipenem (0.00%), Chloramphenicol (26.31%), and Colistin (77.77%). Somewhere else, 46 presumptive Staphylococcus aureus were resistant to Vancomycin (30.43%), Oxacillin (13.04%), Penicillin G (89.13%), Ceftriaxone (15.21%), Cefoxitin (2.73%), Tobramycin (36.95%), Kanamycin (30.43%), Ciprofloxacin (15.21%), Norfloxacin (43.47%), Tetracycline (56.52%), Chloramphenicol (13.04%), and Fosfomycin (2.73%). Conclusion: the hospital wastewaters harbour a variety of pathogens, most of which are resistant to several families of antibiotics

    Évaluation de la teneur en vitamine A et de l’indice de peroxyde des huiles végétales couramment vendues dans les marchés au Burkina Faso

    La carence en vitamine A constitue un problème de santé publique dans les pays en développement et affecte en particulier les jeunes enfants et les femmes en âge de procréer. Le but de cette étude était d'évaluer l’application de la politique nationale en matière de production et d’importation, des huiles végétales raffinées, d’enrichissement obligatoire en vitamine A au Burkina Faso, à travers la détermination de la teneur en vitamine A et de l'indice de peroxyde des huiles végétales vendues sur le marché. Cette étude transversale a été menée dans cinq villes sélectionnées selon la densité de la population. Cinquante-neuf échantillons d’huile ont été achetés dans ces villes pour évaluer la teneur en vitamine A, l'indice de peroxyde et leur conformité aux normes nationales et internationales. Dans l'ensemble, 76,27% des huiles n'étaient pas suffisamment enrichies en vitamine A. Pour l'indice de peroxyde, 3,39% des huiles n'étaient pas conformes. Globalement, 77,97% des huiles n'étaient pas conformes pour ces deux paramètres. Au regard de ces résultats il est nécessaire d’intensifier la lutte contre la mise à la consommation des huiles non enrichies en vitamine A au Burkina Faso. English title: valuation of the vitamin A content and the peroxide value of vegetable oils commonly sold in markets in Burkina Faso Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in developing countries and particularly affects young children and women of childbearing age. The aim of this study was to assess the implementation of the national policy on the production and importation of refined vegetable oils and mandatory vitamin A fortification in Burkina Faso, through the determination of the vitamin A content and peroxide value of vegetable oils sold on the market. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five cities selected according to population density. Fifty-nine oil samples were purchased in these cities to assess vitamin A content, peroxide value and compliance with national and Codex standards. Overall, 76.17% of the oils were not adequately fortified with vitamin A. For the peroxide value, 3.39% of the oils did not comply. Overall, 77.97% of the oils did not comply for these two parameters. In view of these results, it is necessary to intensify the fight against the consumption of oils not enriched in vitamin A in Burkina Faso

    Microbiological and Physicochemical Quality of Groundwater and Risk Factors for Its Pollution in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

    Ouagadougou is a city with three million inhabitants and an increasing demand for water of sufficient quality. New boreholes are drilled to match demand, but their protection from anthropogenic contamination is insufficient. To assess the quality of urban groundwater in Ouagadougou for the first time, a total of 32 borehole water samples were collected and assessed for bacteriological and physicochemical features using established methods. Health risk inspections and hazard assessments were undertaken at sampling sites to identify potential hazards and contributing factors. Statistical analysis was used to identify associations between risk factors and water pollution. The study revealed poor quality of groundwater in Ouagadougou with major nonconformities related to total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and turbidity. Water samples from 19 boreholes (59%) were contaminated with coliforms, and 11 (34%) with E. coli. Additionally, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus, and anaerobic sulphite-reducing bacterial spores were detected. Deviations from physicochemical quality requirements were observed for water turbidity, pH, nitrate, fluorine, and iron. Risk analysis showed the major high-risk practices to be sludge spreading or having a garbage heap, a latrine, a septic tank, or dirty water near a borehole. Based on these results, for public health protection, authorities must take strict measures to prohibit such practices around these important sources of drinking water in Ouagadougou
