Schematic Models for Active Nonlinear Microrheology
We analyze the nonlinear active microrheology of dense colloidal suspensions
using a schematic model of mode-coupling theory. The model describes the
strongly nonlinear behavior of the microscopic friction coefficient as a
function of applied external force in terms of a delocalization transition. To
probe this regime, we have performed Brownian dynamics simulations of a system
of quasi-hard spheres. We also analyze experimental data on hard-sphere-like
colloidal suspensions [Habdas et al., Europhys. Lett., 2004, 67, 477]. The
behavior at very large forces is addressed specifically
Dynamics of Energy Transport in a Toda Ring
We present results on the relationships between persistent currents and the
known conservation laws in the classical Toda ring. We also show that
perturbing the integrability leads to a decay of the currents at long times,
with a time scale that is determined by the perturbing parameter. We summarize
several known results concerning the Toda ring in 1-dimension, and present new
results relating to the frequency, average kinetic and potential energy, and
mean square displacement in the cnoidal waves, as functions of the wave vector

Theory of Suspension Segregation in Partially Filled Horizontal Rotating Cylinders
It is shown that a suspension of particles in a partially-filled, horizontal,
rotating cylinder is linearly unstable towards axial segregation and an
undulation of the free surface at large enough particle concentrations. Relying
on the shear-induced diffusion of particles, concentration-dependent viscosity,
and the existence of a free surface, our theory provides an explanation of the
experiments of Tirumkudulu et al., Phys. Fluids 11, 507-509 (1999); ibid. 12,

Solution of a Generalized Stieltjes Problem
We present the exact solution for a set of nonlinear algebraic equations
. These
were encountered by us in a recent study of the low energy spectrum of the
Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain \cite{dhar}. These equations are low
(density) ``degenerations'' of more complicated transcendental equation of
Bethe's Ansatz for a ferromagnet, but are interesting in themselves. They
generalize, through a single parameter, the equations of Stieltjes,
, familiar from Random Matrix theory.
It is shown that the solutions of these set of equations is given by the
zeros of generalized associated Laguerre polynomials. These zeros are
interesting, since they provide one of the few known cases where the location
is along a nontrivial curve in the complex plane that is determined in this
work.
Using a ``Green's function'' and a saddle point technique we determine the
asymptotic distribution of zeros.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Fluctuation limits of strongly degenerate branching systems
Functional limit theorems for scaled fluctuations of occupation time
processes of a sequence of critical branching particle systems in with
anisotropic space motions and strongly degenerated splitting abilities are
proved in the cases of critical and intermediate dimensions. The results show
that the limit processes are constant measure-valued Wienner processes with
degenerated temporal and simple spatial structures.Comment: 15 page
The Origin of Degeneracies and Crossings in the 1d Hubbard Model
The paper is devoted to the connection between integrability of a finite
quantum system and degeneracies of its energy levels. In particular, we analyze
in detail the energy spectra of finite Hubbard chains. Heilmann and Lieb
demonstrated that in these systems there are crossings of levels of the same
parameter independent symmetry. We show that this apparent violation of the
Wigner-von Neumann noncrossing rule follows directly from the existence of
nontrivial conservation laws and is a characteristic signature of quantum
integrability. The energy spectra of Hubbard chains display many instances of
permanent (at all values of the coupling) twofold degeneracies that cannot be
explained by parameter independent symmetries. We relate these degeneracies to
the different transformation properties of the conserved currents under spatial
reflections and the particle-hole transformation and estimate the fraction of
doubly degenerate states. We also discuss multiply degenerate eigenstates of
the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The wave functions of many of these states do not
depend on the coupling, which suggests the existence of an additional parameter

Screened and Unscreened Phases in Sedimenting Suspensions
A coarse-grained stochastic hydrodynamical description of velocity and
concentration fluctuations in steadily sedimenting suspensions is constructed,
and analyzed using self-consistent and renormalization group methods. We find
that there exists a dynamical, non-equilibrium phase transition from an
"unscreened" phase in which we recover the Caflisch-Luke (R.E. Caflisch and
J.H.C. Luke, Phys. Fluids 28, 759 (1985)) divergence of the velocity variance
to a "screened" phase where the velocity fluctuations have a finite correlation
length growing as where is the particle volume fraction,
in agreement with Segr\`e et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2574 (1997)) and the
velocity variance is independent of system size. Detailed predictions are made
for the correlation function in both phases and at the transition.Comment: 4 pages, revtex 1 figur
Transport properties of one-dimensional interacting fermions in aperiodic potentials
Motivated by the existence of metal-insulator transition in one-dimensional
non-interacting fermions in quasiperiodic and pseudorandom potentials, we
studied interacting spinless fermion models using exact many-body Lanczos
diagonalization techniques. Our main focus was to understand the effect of the
fermion-fermion interaction on the transport properties of aperiodic systems.
We calculated the ground state energy and the Kohn charge stiffness Dc. Our
numerical results indicate that there exists a region in the interaction
strength parameter space where the system may behave differently from the
metallic and insulating phases. This intermediate phase may be characterized by
a power law scaling of the charge stiffness constant in contrast to the
localized phase where Dc scales exponentially with the size of the system.Comment: 11 pages LaTex document with 5 eps figures. Uses revtex style file
A Majorana Fermion t-J Model in One Dimension
We study a rotation invariant Majorana fermion model in one dimension using
diagrammatic perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization of small
systems. The model is inspired by a Majorana representation of the
antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain, and it is similar in form to the t-J model of
electrons, except that the Majorana fermions carry spin-1 and Z_2 charge. We
discuss the implications of our results for the low-energy excitations of the
spin-1/2 chain. We also discuss a generalization of our model from 3 species of
Majorana fermions to N species; the SO(4) symmetric model is particularly

Effort, reward and self-reported mental health: a simulation study on negative affectivity bias
Background : In the present article, we propose an alternative method for dealing with negative affectivity (NA) biases in research, while investigating the association between a deleterious psychosocial environment at work and poor mental health. First, we investigated how strong NA must be to cause an observed correlation between the independent and dependent variables. Second, we subjectively assessed whether NA can have a large enough impact on a large enough number of subjects to invalidate the observed correlations between dependent and independent variables.Methods : We simulated 10,000 populations of 300 subjects each, using the marginal distribution of workers in an actual population that had answered the Siegrist's questionnaire on effort and reward imbalance (ERI) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ).Results : The results of the present study suggested that simulated NA has a minimal effect on the mean scores for effort and reward. However, the correlations between the effort and reward imbalance (ERI) ratio and the GHQ score might be important, even in simulated populations with a limited NA.Conclusions : When investigating the relationship between the ERI ratio and the GHQ score, we suggest the following rules for the interpretation of the results: correlations with an explained variance of 5% and below should be considered with caution; correlations with an explained variance between 5% and 10% may result from NA, although this effect does not seem likely; and correlations with an explained variance of 10% and above are not likely to be the result of NA biases. <![CDATA[Optic neuropathy resulting in permanent visual loss is an infrequent delayed complication of radiation therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) has been used to treat such a complication, but its efficacy is controversial. We report a patient who presented with radiation-induced optic neuropathy 17 months after irradiation for a left maxillary antrum melanoma. HBO fully reversed visual loss in the more recently involved eye, and slightly improved vision in the earlier affected eye
