Applying RDA to digital resources metadata

    Get PDF
This presentation will describe how Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been applied in cataloging, updating, and migrating digital resources at the University of Central Florida Libraries. Presenters will explain the similarities and differences of using RDA to catalog traditional serials in an Integrated Library System (ILS) and digitized serials and serial analytics in a Content Management System (CMS). Examples will be used to illustrate the issues of using RDA in conjunction with other metadata standards such as Dublin Core (DC) and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) to catalog digital resources including digitized newspapers and monographs, such as: relating RDA core elements to the DC and MODS fields; treating analytical description; transcribing newspaper information; applying roles and vocabularies as specified in RDA; exhibiting work, expression, and manifestation relationship; and describing designator relationships. It will also address the typical changes made to convert old records to RDA in migrating them to new systems. This session will help catalogers and metadata librarians react to the changing cataloging rules and apply them in their daily work

Enhancing Gender, Race and Ethnicity Subjects for Inclusive Metadata

To improve discovery of biography collections in a library and embrace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in cataloging, the librarians can audit their collections with gender, race and ethnicity of the biographees in mind. At the University of Central Florida, librarians from Cataloging, Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) analyzed a juvenile biography collection for biases, and enhanced its subject headings with the biographees’ gender, race and other information. A rubric was designed to analyze the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and non-LCSH in bibliographic records for biographies, including the biographees’ gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality. After data was collected from the records as well as the books based on the rubric, the librarians checked the data and compiled statistics to measure subject headings for bias and changes in cataloging practices. Local headings were further designed and added to the records, additional LCSH Headings, LC Demographic Group Terms to enrich author information with ethnicity/cultural group, nationality/regional group values were also added. In addition, Homosaurus terms were included to represent LGBTQAI+ people. These enhanced subjects will improve access to the juvenile biographies and promote diversity and inclusion in describing biographees. It is part of the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference 2022 DEI Projects Showcase, Washington DC, June 27, 2022

With equity, diversity, and inclusion in mind, and to improve access to the juvenile biographies in the University of Central Florida Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) Library, librarians from cataloging, CMC and ILL, analyzed 952 bibliographic records and enhanced subject headings with biographees\u27 gender, race, nationality and other information. Statistics were compiled to measure subject headings for biases and inequalities. Local subjects, LCSH, LC Demographic Group Terms and Homosaurus terms were added to aid students to discover materials for the diverse population they will teach. Long Proposal Description: Dr. Rudine Bishop\u27s theory Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors explains that children need to see themselves reflected in books and learn about the lives of others. With equity, diversity, and inclusion in mind and to improve access to the juvenile biographies in the University of Central Florida Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) Library, librarians from cataloging, CMC and ILL, analyzed 952 bibliographic records and used the results to enhance subject headings with biographees\u27 gender, race, nationality and other information. The librarians devised a rubric to analyze and quantify the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and non-LCSH in the records. A student assistant was trained to review the juvenile biographies and input data about each book into a database. Librarians used this data to compile statistics to measure subject headings for bias and inequality and to determine how cataloging practice has changed over time. They also added local subject headings, LCSH, LC Demographic Group Terms and Homosaurus terms to these records in the library catalog. This project aids student educators in discovering materials for the diverse population they will teach

Analyzing and Enhancing Juvenile Biography Subject Headings for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

To better present the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) materials at the University of Central Florida and improve access to these materials for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), the librarians from Cataloging, CMC and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) undertook a project to analyze the bibliographic records of juvenile biographies and used the results to enhance subject headings with biographees’ gender, race and other information. A Qualtrics survey to audit the juvenile biography collection was designed by the librarians, and a student checked the biography books and inputted data into the survey. The librarians then exported the data to Excel and used it to enhance records with local and other subjects for gender, race/ethnicity, and nationality, including Library of Congress (LC) Demographic Group Terms, Homosaurus and additional LC Subject Headings. Statistical analysis of the survey results and textual analysis of the subject headings were also performed. It is hoped that the enhanced subjects will help student educators discover materials that mirror the diverse population they will teach. This presentation is part of the “Approaches to Reparative Metadata Projects” Panel hosted by the Sunshine State Digital Network (SSDN)
