Adaptive weight estimator for quantum error correction
Quantum error correction of a surface code or repetition code requires the
pairwise matching of error events in a space-time graph of qubit measurements,
such that the total weight of the matching is minimized. The input weights
follow from a physical model of the error processes that affect the qubits.
This approach becomes problematic if the system has sources of error that
change over time. Here we show how the weights can be determined from the
measured data in the absence of an error model. The resulting adaptive decoder
performs well in a time-dependent environment, provided that the characteristic
time scale of the variations is greater than , with the duration of one error-correction cycle and
the typical error probability per qubit in one cycle.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Coherent Neutrino Scattering in Dark Matter Detectors
Coherent elastic neutrino- and WIMP-nucleus interaction signatures are
expected to be quite similar. This paper discusses how a next generation
ton-scale dark matter detector could discover neutrino-nucleus coherent
scattering, a precisely-predicted Standard Model process. A high intensity
pion- and muon- decay-at-rest neutrino source recently proposed for oscillation
physics at underground laboratories would provide the neutrinos for these
measurements. In this paper, we calculate raw rates for various target
materials commonly used in dark matter detectors and show that discovery of
this interaction is possible with a 2 tonyear GEODM exposure in an
optimistic energy threshold and efficiency scenario. We also study the effects
of the neutrino source on WIMP sensitivity and discuss the modulated neutrino
signal as a sensitivity/consistency check between different dark matter
experiments at DUSEL. Furthermore, we consider the possibility of coherent
neutrino physics with a GEODM module placed within tens of meters of the
neutrino source.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Explaining women's success: technological change and the skill content of women's work
The closing of the gender wage gap is an ongoing phenomenon in industrialized countries. However, research has been limited in its ability to understand the causes of these changes, due in part to an inability to directly compare the work of women to that of men. In this study, we use a new approach for analyzing changes in the gender pay gap that uses direct measures of job tasks and gives a comprehensive characterization of how work for men and women has changed in recent decades. Using data from West Germany, we find that women have witnessed relative increases in nonroutine analytic tasks and non-routine interactive tasks, which are associated with higher skill levels. The most notable difference between the genders is, however, the pronounced relative decline in routine task inputs among women with little change for men. These relative task changes explain a substantial fraction of the closing of the gender wage gap. Our evidence suggests that these task changes are driven, at least in part, by technological change. We also show that these task changes are related to the recent polarization of employment between low and high skilled occupations that we observed in the 1990s
Measuring Active-to-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations with Neutral Current Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering
Light sterile neutrinos have been introduced as an explanation for a number
of oscillation signals at eV. Neutrino oscillations at
relatively short baselines provide a probe of these possible new states. This
paper describes an accelerator-based experiment using neutral current coherent
neutrino-nucleus scattering to strictly search for active-to-sterile neutrino
oscillations. This experiment could, thus, definitively establish the existence
of sterile neutrinos and provide constraints on their mixing parameters. A
cyclotron-based proton beam can be directed to multiple targets, producing a
low energy pion and muon decay-at-rest neutrino source with variable distance
to a single detector. Two types of detectors are considered: a germanium-based
detector inspired by the CDMS design and a liquid argon detector inspired by
the proposed CLEAR experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Experimenting with Cigarettes and Physical Activity Among Mexican Origin Youth: A Cross Sectional Analysis of the Interdependent Associations Among Sensation Seeking, Acculturation, and Gender
Sensation seeking tendencies tend to manifest during adolescence and are associated with both health-compromising behaviors and health-enhancing behaviors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between sensation seeking and physical activity, a health-enhancing behavior, and between sensation seeking and experimenting with cigarettes, a health compromising-behavior, among a cohort of Mexican origin adolescents residing in the United States with different levels of acculturation. Methods: In 2009, 1,154 Mexican origin youth (50.5% girls, mean age 14.3 years (SD = 1.04)) provided data on smoking behavior, physical activity, linguistic acculturation, and sensation seeking. We conducted Pearson's chi(2) tests to examine the associations between categorical demographic characteristics (i.e. gender, age, country of birth and parental educational attainment) and both cigarette experimentation and physical activity and Student's t-tests to examine mean differences on the continuous variables (i.e. sensation seeking subscale) by the behaviors. We examined mean differences in the demographic characteristics, acculturation, and both behaviors for each of the sensation seeking subscales using analysis of variance (ANOVA). To examine relationships between the sensation seeking subscales, gender, and both behaviors, at different levels of acculturation we completed unconditional logistic regression analyses stratified by level of acculturation. Results: Overall, 23.3% had experimented with cigarettes and 29.0% reported being physically active for at least 60 minutes/day on at least 5 days/week. Experimenting with cigarettes and being physically active were more prevalent among boys than girls. Among girls, higher levels of sensation seeking tendencies were associated with higher levels of acculturation and experimentation with cigarettes, but not with physical activity. Among boys, higher levels of sensation seeking tendencies were associated with higher levels of acculturation, experimenting with cigarettes and being physically active. Conclusions: Our results suggest that interventions designed to prevent smoking among Mexican origin youth may need to address social aspects associated with acculturation, paying close attention to gendered manifestations of sensation seeking.National Cancer Institute CA105203, CA126988Caroline W. Word Embeddings for Entity-annotated Texts
Learned vector representations of words are useful tools for many information
retrieval and natural language processing tasks due to their ability to capture
lexical semantics. However, while many such tasks involve or even rely on named
entities as central components, popular word embedding models have so far
failed to include entities as first-class citizens. While it seems intuitive
that annotating named entities in the training corpus should result in more
intelligent word features for downstream tasks, performance issues arise when
popular embedding approaches are naively applied to entity annotated corpora.
Not only are the resulting entity embeddings less useful than expected, but one
also finds that the performance of the non-entity word embeddings degrades in
comparison to those trained on the raw, unannotated corpus. In this paper, we
investigate approaches to jointly train word and entity embeddings on a large
corpus with automatically annotated and linked entities. We discuss two
distinct approaches to the generation of such embeddings, namely the training
of state-of-the-art embeddings on raw-text and annotated versions of the
corpus, as well as node embeddings of a co-occurrence graph representation of
the annotated corpus. We compare the performance of annotated embeddings and
classical word embeddings on a variety of word similarity, analogy, and
clustering evaluation tasks, and investigate their performance in
entity-specific tasks. Our findings show that it takes more than training
popular word embedding models on an annotated corpus to create entity
embeddings with acceptable performance on common test cases. Based on these
results, we discuss how and when node embeddings of the co-occurrence graph
representation of the text can restore the performance.Comment: This paper is accepted in 41st European Conference on Information

Against the Odds: Psychomotor Development of Children Under 2 years in a Sudanese Orphanage.
Providing abandoned children the necessary medical and psychological care as possible after their institutionalization may minimize developmental delays. We describe psychomotor development in infants admitted to an orphanage in Khartoum, Sudan, assessed at admission and over an 18-month follow-up. Psychological state and psychomotor quotients were determined using a simplified Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale (NBAS), the Brunet-Lezine and Alarm distress baby (ADBB) scale. From May-September 2005, 151 children were evaluated 2, 4, 9, 12 and 18 months after inclusion. At admission, ∼15% of children ≤1 month had a regulation impairment according to the NBAS, and 33.8% presented a distress state (ADBB score >5). More than 85% (129/151) recovered normal psychomotor development. The results of the program reinforce the importance of early detection of psychological disorders followed by rapid implementation of psychological case management to improve the development of young children in similar institutions and circumstances
Analysis of a Large Sample of Neutrino-Induced Muons with the ArgoNeuT Detector
ArgoNeuT, or Argon Neutrino Test, is a 170 liter liquid argon time projection
chamber designed to collect neutrino interactions from the NuMI beam at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory. ArgoNeuT operated in the NuMI low-energy beam
line directly upstream of the MINOS Near Detector from September 2009 to
February 2010, during which thousands of neutrino and antineutrino events were
collected. The MINOS Near Detector was used to measure muons downstream of
ArgoNeuT. Though ArgoNeuT is primarily an R&D project, the data collected
provide a unique opportunity to measure neutrino cross sections in the 0.1-10
GeV energy range. Fully reconstructing the muon from these interactions is
imperative for these measurements. This paper focuses on the complete kinematic
reconstruction of neutrino-induced through-going muons tracks. Analysis of this
high statistics sample of minimum ionizing tracks demonstrates the reliability
of the geometric and calorimetric reconstruction in the ArgoNeuT detector
