Time and Crisis: Questions for Psychoanalysis and Race

In the triumvirate of personalities and motives—from Wright and Baldwin to Coates—we encounter the essential elements of the “crisis” that configures black passage in the New World. These lines of kinship, both consanguineous and ineffable, travelling from father to son, from uncle to nephew, from one generation to the next, lend us a figurative rhythm that grasps the notion of the processional—the traversal of time and space that remains fundamentally mysterious, just as we can put our finger directly on the problem—black life is still as endangered and precarious as it ever was. If one regards such passage as a “crisis,” then it is precisely because it is riddled with turning points, sudden ruts and rifts in the road when the way seemed smooth and clear—those moments when decisions must be made—and from that perspective, African-American cultural apprenticeship offers, by definition, crisis not as a state of exception, but rather, as a steady state, given historical pressures that bear in on it and that become, as a result, intramural pressures. What I wish to do in these remarks is to clarify one of the questions engendered by this predicament, and that is to say, the riddle of identity and how it matters, but even more than an inquiry into the identitarian, I am searching for a protocol through intramural space

A Simulation Study of a Limited Sensing Random Access Algorithm for a Local Area Network with Voice Users

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the perfonnance of a limited sensing random access algorithm in a local area network with voice users. Random access algorithms have proven to be very efficient in local area network environments with data users. However, in contrast to data packets, voice packets cannot be allowed to experience long delays, because of the requirement that a voice data stream must be played out at the receiver. If a voice packet does exceed its established maximum delay, it is discarded. This simulation study finds the number of voice users that a network can support, provided the packet loss rate that can be tolerated by a customer does not exceed a certain threshold. Finally, a comparison is made with the simulation results of this algorithm with other commonly used protocols

With the concept of mainstreaming of handicapped children being at the forefront of special education, and the stipulations imposed by P.L. 94-142 regarding public school education for all handicapped children, normal children are more in contact with children demonstrating disabilities than they previously have been. The school is a major institution affecting a child's socialization. A major aspect of the socialization process is the development of attitudes towards other people. It seems appropriate, then, to investigate the attitudes that physically able-bodied children have towards their physically disabled peers, and at what age these attitudes emerge

Dr. Levy, who served as the Chief of Pathology at the Fayetteville Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (“Fayetteville VA”) from 2005 to 2018, diagnosed veterans with an error rate of 10%. The “pathology practice average is 0.7%.” Of the more than 3,000 cases Dr. Levy misdiagnosed, 589 were classified as “Level 3 (major) errors” which should always “trigger an [internal] investigation.” Unfortunately, no investigations ensued until Dr. Levy’s ultimate arrest, although the Fayetteville VA addressed Dr. Levy’s behavior repeatedly throughout his employment

An Analysis of Personality Characteristics, Emotional Intelligence, and Leadership Attributes of Louisiana Community and Technical College Chancellors

This study explores the personality characteristics, emotional intelligence, and leadership attributes of twelve Louisiana community college chancellors in order to better understand leadership selection in community and technical colleges. Hogan’s Leadership Forecast Series and the self-reported Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire short-form were used to explore and describe the leadership qualities of chancellors. More specifically, the Hogan Leadership Forecast Series of assessments included the Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MPVI), Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), and Hogan Development Survey (HDS). Assessments were administered in May 2018. Findings indicated that, in general, chancellors varied widely in their personality characteristics (including both potential “bright-side” and “dark-side” qualities), as well as motives, and values. However, the chancellors showed considerable similarities in reporting a high level of comfort with both transformational and transactional leadership styles. The chancellors varied greatly in relation to interests, stressors, and bright-side qualities, as well as emotional intelligence. By better understanding the personal dispositions and leadership styles among current leaders, it may be possible to better select future leaders within the system. It seems that high scores on Transformational and Transactional leadership scales were common among the leaders. Findings suggest that looking at leadership processes may be a more fruitful method for researchers than examining and assessing personality traits in the selection process. This study may therefore, provide baseline data that contributes to future selection, retention, development, and recruitment of community college chancellors. Given the increased challenges of leadership shortage and turnover, and the leadership crisis that exists in higher education in general, this study may help to provide personality factors and leadership attributes that may be helpful in clarifying the desired traits and profiles of future leadership candidates

Born Again: Faulkner and the Second Birth

When DuBois formulated his concept of “double consciousness,” he explicitly had in mind the psychic dilemma of historical subjects relatively new to the conditions of freedom. By 1903, the year of the publication of DuBois’s Souls of Black Folk, where his “double consciousness” is elaborated, African-Americans were entering their second generation of emancipation; about seven years later, Faulkner’s Quentin Compson will enter the freshman class at Harvard University, and in the course of that fateful year will rehearse and hear rehearsed the narrative of his grandfather’s good friend, Thomas Sutpen; but in the astonishing course of Absalom, Absalom! Sutpen “becomes” Sutpen only when he discovers something akin to “class,” as the black servant drives the small barefoot white boy away from the front door of the Big House. We would be justified in calling the epiphany that violently strikes the consciousness of Sutpen a “second birth,” the next step that the subject takes after the first one. “ ‘Born Again’ “ explores the implications of the “second birth” for this writing and its relationship to the DuBoisian “double consciousness.

Effects of Science Crusade in Arkansas

The NSF funded Arkansas Statewide Systemic Initiative (1992), developed with the intent to restructure mathematics and science education in Arkansas, is a recent reform in the Arkansas educational system. The project aimed at changing Arkansas students\u27 attitudes toward science and mathematics, improving student learning and performance, introducing appropriate technology into the classrooms, and allowing for a lasting community involvement in the Arkansas educational system. To implement change through Arkansas Science and Math Crusades, the project has provided large scale teacher training and professional development opportunities to Arkansas school teachers. This reform effort in education started in 1992. A search of the ERIC Database back to 1992 produces no relevant records relating to Crusades in general nor the Science Crusade in particular. This article presents the results of a study of the effects of the Science Crusade as viewed by Arkansas River Valley science teachers who have participated in the Science Crusade training

Is the POLST Model Desirable for Florida?

Florida has one ofthe largest and most rapidly growing elderly populations in the nation. Although advances in medicine are allowing physicians to extend the lives of elderly patients, advances must simultaneously be made in the end-of-life care arena to ensure that the comfort and quality of life of elderly patients is maintained. This paper argues that use of a Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form in Florida would be effective in increasing the accuracy oftranslating patients’ end-of-life wishes into treatment orders, in ensuring the consistency of treatment across settings, and in improving health care provider compliance with patient preferences. It will be demonstrated that present concerns in Florida are essentially the same as those which previously existed in other states that have successfully implemented POLST programs

Motivation and User Engagement in Fitness Tracking: Heuristics for Mobile Healthcare Wearables

Wearable fitness trackers have gained a new level of popularity due to their ambient data gathering and analysis. This has signalled a trend toward self-efficacy and increased motivation among users of these devices. For consumers looking to improve their health, fitness trackers offer a way to more readily gain motivation via the personal data-based insights the devices offer. However, the user experience (UX) that accompanies wearables is critical to helping users interpret, understand, gain motivation and act on their data. Despite this, there is little evidence as to specific aspects of fitness tracker user engagement and long-term motivation. We report on a 4-week situated diary study and Healthcare Technology Self-efficacy (HTSE) questionnaire assessment of 34 users of two popular American fitness trackers: JawBone and FitBit.
