Deaf girls talk about math and their future

    Get PDF
This study investigated the three variables of deaf girls\u27 attributions for success and failure in mathematics. The three variables are confidence, usefulness of mathematics, and the impact of socializers. There are no research studies about deaf girls and mathematics. Parallel research studies from hearing populations have been done. This study was conducted at Rochester School for the Deaf in New York. The subjects were eleven deaf high school girls ranging from seventh grade to eleventh grade. Also included in the subjects were the eleven parents of the deaf high school girls. The study included both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Qualitative techniques were used to evoke responses in interviews of deaf high school girls and phone interviews from parents of deaf high school girls. Quantitative techniques were used to record grades of the deaf high school girls taking mathematics from their elementary to highs school years. The findings of this study parallel the findings of the hearing populations except for two areas - a high percentage of boys and girls who are treated equally in math class and a low percentage of girls who consults their fathers for help with mathematics. Future research is recommendedto explore other variables of deaf girls\u27 attributions of success and failure in mathematics further. The findings may be parallel to the findings of the hearing populations

Jürg Schneider: Vom Gebrauch der Philologie. Der Luzerner Sprachforscher Renward Brandstetter (1860–1942) (On the Use of Philology. The Lucerne Linguist Renward Brandstetter (1860-1942

This small book is the biography of a Swiss linguist who was an outsider in Indonesian studies. Working as a professor at the local Gymnasium of Lucerne, Brandstetter had a strong interest in philology and used it first to do research in the dialects and folklore of his native Lucerne. On an excursion in 1884 he met the Dutch professor G.K. Niemann, who taught Malay to missionaries and colonial administrators at the Academy in Delft. Brandstetter got interested in Indonesian languages and sta..

The Bragg demagnifier: X-ray imaging with kilometer propagation distance within a meter

We introduce a new X-ray imaging technique to facilitate propagation-based phase contrast of large, centimeter-sized samples. The diffracted X-ray wavefield behind the sample is demagnified by asymmetric Bragg crystal optics, thereby virtually increasing the propagation distance and thus enhancing the image contrast. We demonstrate the significant increase in image contrast compared to conventional phase contrast imaging at the same short physical propagation distance. Additionally, the Bragg demagnifier enables the reduction of image blur caused by the finite X-ray source size. In combination with a subsequent Bragg magnifier, the method will allow for an even higher dose efficiency, rendering this technique a potential candidate for, e.g., low-dose (bio)medical diagnostics

Bundesverfassungsgericht kippt BKA-Gesetz: Ein Pyrrhus-Sieg der Freiheitsrechte?

    Get PDF

Transmon Qubit in a Magnetic Field: Evolution of Coherence and Transition Frequency

    Get PDF
We report on spectroscopic and time-domain measurements on a fixed-frequency concentric transmon qubit in an applied in-plane magnetic field to explore its limits of magnetic field compatibility. We demonstrate quantum coherence of the qubit up to field values of B=40mTB={40}\,\mathrm{mT}, even without an optimized chip design or material combination of the qubit. The dephasing rate Γφ\Gamma_\varphi is shown to be not affected by the magnetic field in a broad range of the qubit transition frequency. For the evolution of the qubit transition frequency, we find the unintended second junction created in the shadow angle evaporation process to be non-negligible and deduce an analytic formula for the field-dependent qubit energies. We discuss the relevant field-dependent loss channels, which can not be distinguished by our measurements, inviting further theoretical and experimental investigation. Using well-known and well-studied standard components of the superconducting quantum architecture, we are able to reach a field regime relevant for quantum sensing and hybrid applications of magnetic spins and spin systems.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Mechanical and electrical failure of transparent nanowire Electrodes

    Get PDF
Flexible transparent electrodes have to withstand large mechanical strains without sacrificing electrical performance. For such applications, silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks are highly promising as they combine mechanical flexibility with low sheet resistance and high optical transmittance. In order to improve the performance of such nanowire electrodes a microscopic understanding of the interplay between mechanical and electrical failure is required. This can be achieved by a combination of in situ (or interrupted) tensile tests in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with 4-probe electrical measurements of the sheet resistence.
