Convex ordering and quantification of quantumness
The characterization of physical systems requires a comprehensive
understanding of quantum effects. One aspect is a proper quantification of the
strength of such quantum phenomena. Here, a general convex ordering of quantum
states will be introduced which is based on the algebraic definition of
classical states. This definition resolves the ambiguity of the quantumness
quantification using topological distance measures. Classical operations on
quantum states will be considered to further generalize the ordering
prescription. Our technique can be used for a natural and unambiguous
quantification of general quantum properties whose classical reference has a
convex structure. We apply this method to typical scenarios in quantum optics
and quantum information theory to study measures which are based on the

Benchmarking of Gaussian boson sampling using two-point correlators
Gaussian boson sampling is a promising scheme for demonstrating a quantum
computational advantage using photonic states that are accessible in a
laboratory and, thus, offer scalable sources of quantum light. In this
contribution, we study two-point photon-number correlation functions to gain
insight into the interference of Gaussian states in optical networks. We
investigate the characteristic features of statistical signatures which enable
us to distinguish classical from quantum interference. In contrast to the
typical implementation of boson sampling, we find additional contributions to
the correlators under study which stem from the phase dependence of Gaussian
states and which are not observable when Fock states interfere. Using the first
three moments, we formulate the tools required to experimentally observe
signatures of quantum interference of Gaussian states using two outputs only.
By considering the current architectural limitations in realistic experiments,
we further show that a statistically significant discrimination between quantum
and classical interference is possible even in the presence of loss, noise, and
a finite photon-number resolution. Therefore, we formulate and apply a
theoretical framework to benchmark the quantum features of Gaussian boson
sampling under realistic conditions
Reactions at Polymer Interfaces: Transitions from Chemical to Diffusion-Control and Mixed Order Kinetics
We study reactions between end-functionalized chains at a polymer-polymer
interface. For small chemical reactivities (the typical case) the number of
diblocks formed, , obeys 2nd order chemically controlled kinetics, , until interfacial saturation. For high reactivities (e.g. radicals) a
transition occurs at short times to 2nd order diffusion-controlled kinetics,
with for unentangled chains while and
regimes occur for entangled chains. Long time kinetics are 1st order and
controlled by diffusion of the more dilute species to the interface: for unentangled cases, while and regimes
arise for entangled systems. The final 1st order regime is governed by center

Seed systems smallholder farmers use
Seed can be an important entry point for promoting productivity, nutrition and resilience among smallholder farmers. While investments have primarily focused on strengthening the formal sector, this article documents the degree to which the informal sector remains the core for seed acquisition, especially in Africa. Conclusions drawn from a uniquely comprehensive data set, 9660 observations across six countries and covering 40 crops, show that farmers access 90.2 % of their seed from informal systems with 50.9 % of that deriving from local markets. Further, 55 % of seed is paid for by cash, indicating that smallholders are already making important investments in this arena. Targeted interventions are proposed for rendering formal and informal seed sector more smallholder-responsive and for scaling up positive impacts
Hematological Changes in Women and Infants Exposed to an AZT-Containing Regimen for Prevention of Mother-to-child-transmission of HIV in Tanzania.
Tanzanian guidelines for prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV (PMTCT) recommend an antiretroviral combination regimen involving zidovudine (AZT) during pregnancy, single-dosed nevirapine at labor onset, AZT plus Lamivudine (3TC) during delivery, and AZT/3TC for 1-4 weeks postpartum. As drug toxicities are a relevant concern, we assessed hematological alterations in AZT-exposed women and their infants. A cohort of HIV-positive women, either with AZT intake (n = 82, group 1) or without AZT intake (n = 62, group 2) for PMTCT during pregnancy, was established at Kyela District Hospital, Tanzania. The cohort also included the infants of group 1 with an in-utero AZT exposure ≥4 weeks, receiving AZT for 1 week postpartum (n = 41), and infants of group 2 without in-utero AZT exposure, receiving a prolonged 4-week AZT tail (n = 58). Complete blood counts were evaluated during pregnancy, birth, weeks 4-6 and 12. For women of group 1 with antenatal AZT intake, we found a statistically significant decrease in hemoglobin level, red blood cells, white blood cells, granulocytes, as well as an increase in red cell distribution width and platelet count. At delivery, the median red blood cell count was significantly lower and the median platelet count was significantly higher in women of group 1 compared to group 2. At birth, infants from group 1 showed a lower median hemoglobin level and granulocyte count and a higher frequency of anemia and granulocytopenia. At 4-6 weeks postpartum, the mean neutrophil granulocyte count was significantly lower and neutropenia was significantly more frequent in infants of group 2. AZT exposure during pregnancy as well as after birth resulted in significant hematological alterations for women and their newborns, although these changes were mostly mild and transient in nature. Research involving larger cohorts is needed to further analyze the impact of AZT-containing regimens on maternal and infant health
Cyanobacteria in water supply reservoirs and strategies for their control
The paper describes the problems related with eutrophication in water supply reservoirs. One of the most relevant impacts
is the growth of cyanobacteria, which are able to generate very powerful toxins. This situation is more critical in tropical
regions, where all metabolical processes are faster and where generally there is lack of financial resources for implementation
of adequate monitoring programs. A case study(Vargem das Flores Reservoir) is presented, with emphasis on the
study of eutrophication development based on N/P relationship. It was found that low N/P values did not favour here the
dominance of cyanobacteria, as generally reported in the technical literature. The paper also discusses the adoption of
some preventive and corrective techniques for avoiding cyanobacteria blooms in water supply reservoirs
