    On the Disintegration of Very Small Satellites

    Small Satellites will disintegrate, if they find a means, such as a separation force, to do so. If inside their Roche limit they are indeed subject to a separation force, that might be sufificient to bring about fragmentation. It is shown in the present paper that satellite disintegration leads to a reduction of orbital energy. The result can be looked upon as a generalization of the collinearity principle, according to which planetary systems strive towards a minimum energy state, for a given constant angular momentum

    True photo-counting statistics of multiple on-off detectors

    We derive a closed photo-counting formula, including noise counts and a finite quantum efficiency, for photon number resolving detectors based on on-off detectors. It applies to detection schemes such as array detectors and multiplexing setups. The result renders it possible to compare the corresponding measured counting statistics with the true photon number statistics of arbitrary quantum states. The photo-counting formula is applied to the discrimination of photon numbers of Fock states, squeezed states, and odd coherent states. It is illustrated for coherent states that our formula is indispensable for the correct interpretation of quantum effects observed with such devices.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Wave heating models for ion-cyclotron heating in EBT-S

    Wave heating of ELMO BUMPY TORUS-SCALE (EBT-S) in the ion-cyclotron range of frequencies will be strongly influenced by the geometry of the plasma. In particular, the short finite length of the mirror sections means that the electron bounce frequency is of comparable magnitude to the ion-cyclotron frequency. Consequently, the bouncing motion of trapped particles impacts the electron absorption of wave energy. Furthermore, the varying magnetic field strength along magnetic field lines influences the ion-cyclotron absorption of waves because the ion-cyclotron resonance conditions are satisfied only at discrete points along the field lines. Expressions are given for trapped and passing electron absorption as well as ion-cyclotron absorption. A numerical example is also discussed

    Seed systems smallholder farmers use

    Seed can be an important entry point for promoting productivity, nutrition and resilience among smallholder farmers. While investments have primarily focused on strengthening the formal sector, this article documents the degree to which the informal sector remains the core for seed acquisition, especially in Africa. Conclusions drawn from a uniquely comprehensive data set, 9660 observations across six countries and covering 40 crops, show that farmers access 90.2 % of their seed from informal systems with 50.9 % of that deriving from local markets. Further, 55 % of seed is paid for by cash, indicating that smallholders are already making important investments in this arena. Targeted interventions are proposed for rendering formal and informal seed sector more smallholder-responsive and for scaling up positive impacts

    We show that one single experiment can test simultaneously and independently both the nonclassicality of states and measurements by the violation or fulfillment of classical bounds on the statistics.     We show how the quasi-analytic method developed to solve linear elastic contacts to coated substrates (Perriot A. and Barthel E. {\em J. Mat. Res.}, {\bf 2004}, {\em 19}, 600) may be extended to adhesive contacts. Substrate inhomogeneity lifts accidental degeneracies and highlights the general structure of the adhesive contact theory. We explicit the variation of the contact variables due to substrate inhomogeneity. The relation to other approaches based on Finite Element analysis is discussed

    The click statistics from on-off detector systems is quite different from the counting statistics of the more traditional detectors. This necessitates introduction of new parameters to characterize the nonclassicality of fields from measurements using on-off detectors. To properly replace the Mandel Q_M parameter, we introduce a parameter Q_B. A negative value represents a sub-binomial statistics. This is possible only for quantum fields, even for super-Poisson light. It eliminates the problems encountered in discerning nonclassicality using Mandel's Q_M for on-off data.Comment: 3 figure

    Laser-UV-microirradiation of interphase nuclei and posttreatment with caffeine: a new approach to establish the arrangement of interphase chromosomes

    Laser UV microirradiation of Chinese hamster interphase cells combined with caffeine post-treatment produced different patterns of chromosome damage in mitosis following irradiation of a small area of the nucleus that may be classified in three categories: I) intact metaphase figures, II) chromosome damage confined to a small area of the metaphase spread, III) mitotic figures with damage on all chromosomes. Category III might be the consequence of a non-localized distortion of nuclear metabolism. By contrast, category II may reflect localized DNA damage induced by microirradiation, which could not be efficiently repaired due to the effect of caffeine. If this interpretation is right, in metaphase figures of category II chromosome damage should occur only at the irradiation site. The effect might then be used to investigate neighbourhood relationships of individual chromosomes in the interphase nucleus
