Isotropic-nematic phase equilibria of polydisperse hard rods: The effect of fat tails in the length distribution
We study the phase behaviour of hard rods with length polydispersity, treated
within a simplified version of the Onsager model. We give a detailed
description of the unusual phase behaviour of the system when the rod length
distribution has a "fat" (e.g. log-normal) tail up to some finite cutoff. The
relatively large number of long rods in the system strongly influences the
phase behaviour: the isotropic cloud curve, which defines the where a nematic
phase first occurs as density is increased, exhibits a kink; at this point the
properties of the coexisting nematic shadow phase change discontinuously. A
narrow three-phase isotropic-nematic-nematic coexistence region exists near the
kink in the cloud curve, even though the length distribution is unimodal. A
theoretical derivation of the isotropic cloud curve and nematic shadow curve,
in the limit of large cutoff, is also given. The two curves are shown to
collapse onto each other in the limit. The coexisting isotropic and nematic
phases are essentially identical, the only difference being that the nematic
contains a larger number of the longest rods; the longer rods are also the only
ones that show any significant nematic ordering. Numerical results for finite
but large cutoff support the theoretical predictions for the asymptotic scaling
of all quantities with the cutoff length.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
High-Voltage Energy Harvesting and Storage System for Internet of Things Indoor Application
On the path toward independence from fossil fuels, solar energy is the mostpromising solution, but it needs a robust and reliable storage system to face itsintrinsicfluctuations due to location, day cycle, and weather. The integrationbetween energy harvesting and storage (H&S) technologies is a must toward cleanenergy production, and it becomes even more appealing considering the possi-bility of producing electricity not only from direct sunlight but also from diffuselight and indoor illumination. Herein, a dye-sensitized solar module (DSSM)developed to harvest indoor illumination and directly store it into an electricaldouble-layer capacitor (EDLC) is presented. Five series-connected dye-sensitizedsolar cells are fabricated on the same substrate and the module is integrated with ahigh-voltage EDLC. The integrated device is characterized under indoor lightsources such as light emitting diodes andfluorescent lamps. The results show oneof the highest efficiencies ever reported for a high-voltage DSSM under indoorillumination (16.27%), the largest voltage window ever reported for an indoor H&Sdevice based on DSSM and EDLC—up to 3 V—and an overall photoelectricconversion and storage efficiency of 9.73% under indoor illumination
Uma ferramenta para cadastro e visualização de metadados em Agricultura de Precisão utilizando GeoNetwork.
A Rede Agricultura de Precisão (RedeAP) consiste em um sistema que pode ser descrito como uma estratégia de gestão dos dados produzidos nas Unidades Piloto, e é fundamentalmente constituído de três componentes inter-relacionados entre si, sendo eles: Bancos de Dados, Política de Acesso e uso dos Dados, e Aplicação. O componente de Aplicação se trata de um Sistema de Informações Geográficas para a Web baseado no software livre i3Geo com o aplicativo de catalogação de dados geoespaciais GeoNetwork (QUEIROS et al., 2011). A adição de novos registros no catálogo do GeoNetwork pode ser feita utilizando o próprio editor de metadados ou pela ferramenta de importação dos dados no formato XML. Em ambos os casos, o usuário deve ser, no mínimo, registrado como editor no grupo correspondente. Contudo, o controle de usuários, perfis e níveis de acesso deve ser feito pelo próprio sistema RedeAP, utilizando, assim, o GeoNetwork somente para a visualização dos metadados catalogados. Baseado nesse contexto, surgiu a necessidade da criação de uma ferramenta que fizesse a catalogação dos metadados com o objetivo de mantê-los armazenados no banco de dados do sistema e também possibilitar sua visualização nos padrões de exibição do GeoNetwork
Annotating Causality in the TempEval-3 Corpus
While there is a wide consensus in the NLP community over the modeling of temporal relations between events, mainly based on Allen\u2019s temporal logic, the question on how to annotate other types of event relations, in particular causal ones, is still open. In this work, we present some annotation guidelines to capture causality between event pairs, partly inspired by TimeML. We then implement a rule-based algorithm to automatically identify explicit causal relations in the TempEval-3 corpus. Based on this annotation, we report some statistics on the behavior of causal cues in text and perform a preliminary investigation on the interaction between causal and temporal relations
The SpatialCIM methodology for spatial document coverage disambiguation and the entity recognition process aided by linguistic techniques.
Abstract. Nowadays it is becoming more usual for users to take into account the geographical localization of the documents in the retrieval information process. However, the conventional retrieval information systems based on key-word matching do not consider which words can represent geographical entities that are spatially related to other entities in the document. This paper presents the SpatialCIM methodology, which is based on three steps: pre-processing, data expansion and disambiguation. In the pre-processing step, the entity recognition process is carried out with the support of the Rembrandt tool. Additionally, a comparison between the performances regarding the discovery of the location entities in the texts of the Rembrandt tool against the use of a controlled vocabulary corresponding to the Brazilian geographic locations are presented. For the comparison a set of geographic labeled news covering the sugar cane culture in the Portuguese language is used. The results showed a F-measure value increase for the Rembrandt tool from 45% in the non-disambiguated process to 0.50 after disambiguation and from 35% to 38% using the controlled vocabulary. Additionally, the results showed the Rembrandt tool has a minimal amplitude difference between precision and recall, although the controlled vocabulary has always the biggest recall values.GeoDoc 2012, PAKDD 2012

Previous evidence supports a role of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) as a candidate gene for hypertension. We characterized an ANP gene promoter variant, which has been associated with lower peptide levels, in a sample of young male subjects from Southern Italy (n=395, mean age=35.2+/-2 years) followed up for 28 years. In this cohort, the ANP gene variant was associated with early blood pressure increase and predisposition to develop hypertension
Discovering the spatial coverage of the documents through the SpatialCIM Methodology.
The main focus of this paper is to present the SpatialCIM methodology to identify the spatial coverage of the documents in the Brazilian geographic area. This methodology uses a linguistic tool to assist in the entity recognition process. The linguistic tool classifies the recognized entities as person, organization, time and localization, among others. The localization entities are checked using a geographic information system (GIS) in order to extract the Brazilian entity geographic paths. If there are multiple geographic paths for a single entity, the disambiguation process is carried out. This process attempts to locate the best geographic path for an entity considering all the geographic entities in the text. Another important objective of this paper is to show that the disambiguation process improves the geographic classification of the documents considering the obtained geographic paths. The validation process considers a set of news previously labeled by an expert and compared with the results of the disambiguated and non-disambiguated geographic paths. The results showed that the disambiguation process improves the classification compared with the classification without disambiguation. Pilot Scale Evaluation of Wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae Strains in Aglianico
In winemaking, the influence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains on the aromatic components of wine is well recognized on a laboratory scale, but few studies deal with the comparison of numerous strains on a pilot scale fermentation. In this scenario, the present work aimed to validate the fermentative behavior of seven wild S. cerevisiae strains on pilot-scale fermentations to evaluate their impact on the aromatic profiles of the resulting wines. The strains, isolated from grapes of different Italian regional varieties, were tested in pilot-scale fermentation trials performed in the cellar in 1 hL of Aglianico grape must. Then, wines were analyzed for their microbiological cell loads, main chemical parameters of enological interest (ethanol, total sugars, fructose, glucose, total and volatile acidity, malic and lactic acids) and volatile aroma profiles by GC/MS/SPME. Seventy-six volatile compounds belonging to six different classes (esters, alcohols, terpenes, aldehydes, acids, and ketones) were identified. The seven strains showed different trends and significant differences, and for each class of compounds, high-producing and low-producing strains were found. Since the present work was performed at a pilot-scale level, mimicking as much as possible real working conditions, the results obtained can be considered as a validation of the screened S. cerevisiae strains and a strategy to discriminate in real closed conditions strains able to impart desired wine sensory features
The treatment of peri-implant diseases: A new approach using HYBENX® as a decontaminant for implant surface and oral tissues
Background: Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition characterized by an inflammatory process involving soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants. The management of periimplant disease has several protocols, among which is the chemical method HYBENX®. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of HYBENX® in the treatment of peri-implantitis and to compare HYBENX® with other chemical agents used in the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Methods: The present study included a population of ten subjects with severe peri-implantitis. The procedure used in the study involves the application of HYBENX® after open-flap debridement. Each patient has been followed for 12 months after a single application of the decontaminant agent. Clinical and radiographical parameters were recorded at baseline, 3 months, and 12 months after treatment completion. Results: At baseline, a mean pocket probing depth (PPD) of 7.3 - 0.5 mm and a mean clinical attachment level (CAL) of 8.8 - 0.8 mm was recorded. An average residual PPD of 4.2 - 0.5 mm and a mean CAL of 5.2 - 0.8 mm were observed after 1 year. Additionally, the average of bone gain was about 3.4 mm, with a mean marginal bone level (MBL) change from 5.8 mm (baseline) to 2.4 mm (12 months). In total, 90% of the treated implants reached the success rate after the 1-year follow-up. Only in one case out of ten treated implants was resolution of the disease not achieved. Conclusion: Clinical improvements highlight that the procedure of open-flap debridement (OFD) + HYBENX® may be considered an effective technique in the treatment of peri-implantitis. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the use of HYBENX® in the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis is promising. Overall, this protocol demands further studies to better understand the role and potential benefits of HYBENX® in the treatment of peri-implantitis
