    Резюме. С помощью дискриминантного анализа установлена возможность определения клеточного типа меланомы увеального тракта в процессе проведения комбинированного (фотокоагуляция + брахитерапия) лечения. Разработана высокозначимая (l = 0,08; р = 0,002) дискриминантная модель, включающая ряд клинических (степень пигментации, пол, скорость роста меланомы) и иммунологических (количество Т- и В-лимфоцитов, процент Т-хелперов и др.) показателей. Особое место в модели занимают признаки, в наибольшей степени отражающие биологические особенности увеальных меланом различного клеточного состава, а именно — скорость изменения размера опухоли в процессе лечения и изменение показателей клеточного иммунитета. Ключевые слова: увеальная меланома, клеточный тип, клинико-морфологические, иммунологические показатели, дискриминантный анализ.Summary. Application of the discriminant analysis shows that it is possible to define the cell type of melanoma of uveal tract of the eye in the process of combined (photocoagulation + brachytherapy) treatment. A highly reliable (l= 0,08; р = 0,002) discriminant model was elaborated, involving a number of both clinical (pigmentation level, gender, melanoma growth rate) and immunological (number of T and B lymphocytes, T helper rate, etc.) indicators. In this model, especially important are those traits that most pronouncedly reflect the biological peculiarities of uveal melanomas of various cellular compositions, namely — the pace of tumor size growth in the process of treatment and changes in cell immunity indicators.     Alpha-decay Rates of Yb and Gd in Solar Neutrino Detectors

    The α\alpha-decay rates for the nuclides 168,170,171,172,173,174,176^{168,170,171,172,173,174,176}Yb and 148,150,152,154^{148,150,152,154}Gd have been estimated from transmission probabilities in a systematic α\alpha-nucleus potential and from an improved fit to α\alpha-decay rates in the rare-earth mass region. Whereas α{\alpha}-decay of 152^{152}Gd in natural gadolinium is a severe obstacle for the use of gadolinium as a low-energy solar-neutrino detector, we show that α{\alpha}-decay does not contribute significantly to the background in a ytterbium detector. An extremely long α{\alpha}-decay lifetime of 168^{168}Yb is obtained from calculation, which may be close to the sensitivity limit in a low-background solar neutrino detector.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure; An author name was correcte

    Surface-enhanced Raman scattering study of the adsorption of the anthraquinone pigment alizarin on Ag nanoparticles

    FT-Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy were applied in the vibrational characterization and study of the adsorption and acidity behavior of the highly fluorescent anthraquinone dye alizarin on Ag colloids prepared by chemical reduction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The SERS spectra were obtained at different conditions of pH, excitation wavelength and pigment concentration in order to deduce the adsorption mechanism of this molecule. On the basis of the results found we propose an adsorption model for alizarin, which has a different acidic behavior on the metal surface to that in solution. On the metal the deprotonation order of the OH groups changes with respect to the aqueous solution, the OH in position 1 being the first to be ionized instead of that in position 2 as occurs in solution. The two main alizarin forms identified on the metal surface correspond to the mono-and dianionic alizarin species

    Structural basis of GM-CSF and IL-2 sequestration by the viral decoy receptor GIF.

    Subversion of the host immune system by viruses is often mediated by molecular decoys that sequester host proteins pivotal to mounting effective immune responses. The widespread mammalian pathogen parapox Orf virus deploys GIF, a member of the poxvirus immune evasion superfamily, to antagonize GM-CSF (granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and IL-2 (interleukin-2), two pleiotropic cytokines of the mammalian immune system. However, structural and mechanistic insights into the unprecedented functional duality of GIF have remained elusive. Here we reveal that GIF employs a dimeric binding platform that sequesters two copies of its target cytokines with high affinity and slow dissociation kinetics to yield distinct complexes featuring mutually exclusive interaction footprints. We illustrate how GIF serves as a competitive decoy receptor by leveraging binding hotspots underlying the cognate receptor interactions of GM-CSF and IL-2, without sharing any structural similarity with the cytokine receptors. Our findings contribute to the tracing of novel molecular mimicry mechanisms employed by pathogenic viruses
