Alcohol Use and Earnings: Findings from a Community Based Study

    Get PDF
In this paper, we examine whether moderate alcohol consumption is associated with higher wages. A population-based sample of Mexican American workers, in the U.S. Southwest is employed. Estimation results indicate a positive association for the entire sample. The findings for the U.S. born Mexican Americans are similar to those of the other U.S. natives. However, we find mixed results for the Mexican born participants, perhaps due to their more recent arrival to the United States These results are consistent with the view that U.S. born Mexican Americans gradually resemble other U.S. born populations in reported trends of alcohol consumption and its association to wages.

Determination of whey-based medium requirements and growth characteristics for the production of yoghurt starter cultures

Thesis (Master)--İzmir Institute of Technology, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, İzmir, 2008Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 63-66)Text in English;Abstract: Turkish and Englishxii, 87 leavesYoghurt is an important dairy product which is produced by thermophilic starter cultures including; Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. They grow synergistically in milk by acidifying milk, produce specific aroma compounds and lactic acid which impact the quality of the yoghurt. Imported cultures are widely used in dairy industry to stabilize the technological properties which cause a change in our natural flora and flavour. Starters from traditional yoghurts have to be preserved. Under this perspective, the aim of this study was to determine the medium requirements of mixed starter cultures for production of starter bacteria which has been isolated and characterized before.Determination of medium requirements were done in a whey-based media. Since bacteriophages were one of the most important problem in dairy industry, to prevent cultures from phage adsorption, media was treated with different salts which can bind free calcium ions. Salts were examined for cell viability and phage infection effects. From these studies Na2HPO4 + KH2 PO4 with 2% of medium addition was chosen as the most effective. Mineral requirements of the mixed cultures were determined. The best combination; 10, 5, 50 ppm for Fe2+, Mn2+, Mg2+ ions with 0,939 desirability were used for initial mineral content of medium. Fermentation constants for mixed cultures were determined. Pure culture fermentations and mixed culture fermentations were performed. According to results mixed culture inoculations gave higher maximum specific growth rates; 0,9188h-1 and 0,7323h-1 for cocci and bacilli while 0,855h-1 and 0,659h-1 were obtained for cocci and bacilli from single strain fermentations

Seismic Design of Landfills for NE United States

    Get PDF
Northeastern U.S. seismicity is briefly discussed and design earthquake is established for landfill projects in accordance with current federal regulations. Methods previously developed for embankment dams are reviewed relative to the seismic stability evaluation of solid waste landfills. Charts were developed to expedite bottom liner and cover system selection while meeting particular seismic design requirements

Seismic Design of Rigid Underground Walls in New England

    Get PDF
The Mononobe-Okabe equation is still widely used in design practice to estimate earthquake induced soil pressures against earth retaining structures without differentiation of the lateral yielding or non-yielding character of the structure. Where these structures are rigid and non-yielding because of structural restraints (e.g., basement walls, bridge abutments, underground transportation, hydraulic and sanitary structures) the use of Mononobe-Okabe equation would not be appropriate and would be generally unsafe. Alternate design recommendations are proposed, based on the results of recent analytical and experimental studies by other researchers, for a nominal design earthquake expected to be representative of the New England seismicity

Selecting Target Market Using ‘The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)’ Model: TarMAR

    Get PDF
Nations are working hard to extend their exports; resulting in increasing competitiveness of the world’s economic environment. Therefore, selecting the appropriate target market is crucial. On the other hand, it is extremely difficult to identify a proper target market due to the complexity of the problem having many attributes. Based on the 'directional policy' matrix, there are two critical parameters to select a proper target market. These are: ‘target market attractiveness’ and ‘own competitive strength’ in the market. But these two critical parameters have many objective and subjective variables. Some of these parameters can be measures such as target market size, annual growth rate, market share, distance, etc. while some of these are subjective aspects and cannot be measured such as product market conditions, tax regime, financial system, institutions, and infrastructure quality, etc. The difficulty is to compare these subjective parameters. This application aims to use 'The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)' to identify the best set of the target market for a selected product range and optimize export efforts

The Impact of the Japanese Purchases of U.S. Treasuries on the Dollar/Yen Exchange Rate

    Get PDF
This article connects net Japanese purchases of U.S. Treasury securities and the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yields to the yen/dollar exchange rate. VAR estimations suggest that a one-time increase in net Japanese purchases has an immediate negative effect on U.S. long bond yields but a short-lived delayed yen depreciation. Further, a one-time increase in the U.S. long yield leads to an immediate yen depreciation. Our results support the hypothesis that Japanese investors, who are major holders of U.S. debt and face extremely low interest rates domestically, influence the dollar/yen rate in a financially integrated world

Altamont Pass Commuter Study: A Longitudinal Analysis of Perceptions and Behavior Change

    Get PDF
The Altamont Pass commuter survey study examines commuters’ perceptions and behaviors towards public transportation during 2019-2020. Results are compared with surveys conducted in 2000 and 2006 to investigate whether there have been any longitudinal changes in the perceptions and behaviors of Altamont Pass commuters over the twenty-year interval. As the previous surveys do, this study focuses on the same three counties, namely, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Merced that comprise the Northern San Joaquin Valley (NSJV). When compared with the previous surveys, these findings reveal some significant differences of responses to most questions, and minor differences of responses to other questions, prompting several important conclusions

In the molecule of the title compound, C17H20N2O2, the aromatic rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 6.23 (22)°. Intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonding involving the amine H atom and the carbonyl O atom affects the conformation of the molecule. One of the ethyl arms is disordered over two conformations, with occupancies of 0.59 (2) and 0.41 (2). The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular C—H⋯O and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, and weak C—H⋯π interactions
