Editor\u27s Note
This issue of Newport History features an extensive study of Solomon Southwick, a Newport native who became the printer and editor of the Newport Mercury, and an important voice for American independence. The author of his complex and fascinating story is C. Deirdre Phelps, who shares ancestry with Southwick—who was in turn a descendant of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick, the Quaker martyrs of Salem, Massachusetts. The photograph spread in this issue celebrates the recent issuance of the third edition of C.P.B. Jefferys’ brief monograph on Newport. First published by the Newport Historical Society in 1976, and then revised by its Publications Committee and republished by the Society in 1992, this “vest pocket” history of Newport has been continually popular over the decades

The Economic Value of the Pollination Service, a Review Across Scales
Pollination is an ecosystem service that is essential to support the production of a wide range of crops. The service is increasingly under threat, as a consequence of among others habitat loss of pollinators and increasing use of pesticides. In order to support maintaining the pollination service in agriculture, there is a need to better understand the economic value generated by the pollination service. This paper discusses the appropriate valuation methods for pollination at different scales, and presents an analysis of the value of the pollination service based on a literature review. At the local scale, the value of the service is highly variable depending on the crop and the market conditions. At the national scale, value estimates of the pollination service range from 1% to 16% of the market value of agricultural production. At the global scale, there is currently no reliable estimate of the value of this service. When the economic value of the pollination service is analysed, it is critical to adjust the valuation approach to the scale of the analysi
Late Winter Foraging by Honeybees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) at Sapsucker Drill Holes
Observations of Apis mellifera foraging at sapsucker drill holes were made during February 1988 in southwestern Virginia. Foraging bouts were dependent upon temperature; more bees visited drill holes when ambient temperatures exceeded 10oC. Honeybees did not feed directly at drill holes but collected congealed sap from bark surfaces
Economic Importance of Sportfishing in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough
We have estimated the economic benefits of sport fishing activity occurring within the
Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, using data from year 2007. Our estimates are
based on the recent study entitled, Economic Impacts and Contributions of Sportfishing
in Alaska, 2007. 2 It contains estimates of angler spending patterns within three regions:
Southcentral, Interior, and Southeast. We also used year 2007 data from the ADFG
annual Statewide Harvest Survey (SWHS).3 These data allow us to allocate economic
benefits to the Mat-Su Borough.Matanuska-Susitna Borough Ecnomic Development DepartmentSummary / Introduction / Methods / Results / Reference
Issues and options related to management of Silver Springs rhesus macaques
Management options for the Silver Springs free-ranging
rhesus macaque population range from removal to active
maintenance of the population in situ. Selection of a management
option is dependent upon which issues are perceived to be true
problems. Management options are presented along with their
effectiveness in dealing with issues previously described.(31 page document
