    A preliminary assessment of the scad and mackerel stocks at Sofala Bank, Mozambique

    Scads (Decapterus russellii, D. macrosoma, Selar crumenophthalmus), Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) and horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) are the main pelagic species caught in a bottom trawl fishery at Sofala Bank and at Boa Paz. Information on catch and effort is presented together with available data on distribution, spawning, size at first maturity, growth, mortality and biomass of the species. As the present catch and fishing mortality are low compared to the estimates of biomass and total mortality it is concluded that the fishery may be expanded further in the future

    MPO-ANCA-Associated Necrotizing Glomerulonephritis in Rheumatoid Arthritis; a Case Report and Review of Literature

    BACKGROUND: Renal involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is common and has a negative impact on patient survival. Only few cases have been reported of necrotizing glomerulonephritis (GN) associated with myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA) in patients with RA. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a patient with RA who developed a necrotizing GN associated with ANCA-MPO, treated with rituximab (RTX). A 55-year-old man with a 27-year history of RA under secukinumab was referred to our nephrology clinic with worsening renal function associated with microhematuria and proteinuria. Our laboratory evaluation showed hypocomplementemia and positive titers for MPO-ANCA (615 U/mL). A renal biopsy demonstrated pauci-immune necrotizing GN. The patient was treated with 3 consecutive pulses of methylprednisolone followed by oral prednisolone (1 mg/Kg) and rituximab (1000 mg, repeated 14 days later). After a 10-month follow-up, the arthritis remains well-controlled, renal function stabilized, proteinuria improved and MPO-ANCA titer normalized (6.3 U/mL). CONCLUSIONS: Necrotizing GN is a rare but a serious condition and an early diagnosis is essential to treatment.     Analytical model for the development strategy of a low-density territory: The Montesinho Natural Park

    Montesinho Natural Park is one of the largest Portuguese natural protected areas, presenting good biodiversity and a cultural heritage with a strong connection to the territory and its people. It constitutes a low-density territory, characterized by a human and social landscape based on community practices, such as joint aid and the community use of goods and means of agricultural production, which have contributed to the construction of the “transmontana” identity and to the richness of the habitats. The promotion of the sustainable development of this low-density rural region demands the understanding of its specificities and an appropriate approach to grasp its challenges and develop effective management tools, allowing to preserve and exploit the region’s potential from various perspectives. The purpose of this article is to develop an analytical model using a literature review and a survey of the region’s specificities. This analytical model intends to provide the basis for designing and assessing sustainable development solutions, increasing local entrepreneurship and community empowerment through regional dynamism, with a focus on environment and heritage preservation, universal tourism accessibility, collective memory and endogenous product development. The suggested model adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and stresses that, in order to ensure that the new initiatives will contribute to the territory’s sustainable development, they should be scrutinized by asking four main questions: Is the initiative promoting the rural development of the territory through the creation of synergies between agroforestry and tourism activities? Is the initiative promoting an inclusive and sustainable tourism that is based on the territory’s resources? Are heritage and collective memory being preserved and valued through the initiative?     Spin configurations in hard-soft coupled bilayer systems: from rigid magnet to exchange spring transitions

    We investigate equilibrium properties of an exchange-spring magnetic system constituted of a soft layer (e.g. Fe) of a given thickness on top of a hard magnetic layer (e.g. FePt). The magnetization profile M(z) as a function of the atomic position ranging from the bottom of the hard layer to the top of the soft layer is obtained in two cases with regard to the hard layer: i) in the case of a rigid interface (the FePt layer is a single layer), the profile is obtained analytically as the exact solution of a sine-Gordon equation with Cauchy's boundary conditions. Additional numerical simulations also confirm this result. Asymptotic expressions of M(z) show a linear behavior near the bottom and the top of the soft layer. In addition, a critical value of the number of atomic planes in the soft layer, that is necessary for the onset of spin deviations, is obtained in terms of the anisotropy and exchange coupling between the adjacent plane in the soft layer. ii) in the case of a relaxed interface (the FePt layer is a multilayer), the magnetization profile is obtained numerically for various Fe and FePt films thicknesses and applied field.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, PRB submitted (12-07-2010

    Prosodic exercises for children with ASD via virtual therapy

It is known that, even though it has a huge spectrum, the characterization of the speech of autistic children has been consensual in the literature as devoid of wealth prosodic parameters manifested by healthy children, such as the emotional aspects that are reflected in communicative interaction. The use of technology as a teaching tool has been growing and the presentation of educational exercises through electronic devices reveals itself as more attractive and captivating for children when compared with traditional methods. In this project, we developed prosodic exercises for intonation assessment in an imitation task, where the main focus is the development and enrichment of prosodic abilities of children with autism spectrum disorders, as a complement to therapy sessions.We evaluated the intonation assessment method, achieving accuracy values between 70%and 83.3%, depending on the feature set adapted (pitch, energy, Mel-Frequency Cepstral features, and pseudo-syllable information), and also by making a fusion of all features. Although the original intention was to integrate these exercises in an existing platform for children diagnosed with ASD, the current implementation is a stand-alone mobile application.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    All-solid-state batteries : an overview for bio applications

    Batteries are crucial for most of bio applications. Batteries based on a liquid or polymer electrolyte needs a weight protective packaging which decreases their energy density and increases their size. This paper aims to identify, on the one hand, the efforts performed in thin-film batteries until now, and on the other hand, to provide an overview about the future perspectives in integration of batteries with flexible electronic circuits and energy harvesting systems. The overview highlights the need for an on-going investigation that aims to replace metallic lithium anode of batteries through different approaches. Other materials, namely silicon or germanium, seem promising when combined with nanostructures.     Metatarsal Salmonella enteritidis osteomyelitis in a healthy child

    Non-typhoidal Salmonella osteomyelitis in healthy children is a very rare condition. A previously healthy 7-year-old boy presented with foot pain following a small injury. Local inflammatory signs of the foot were observed, with a normal radiograph. Two weeks before, he had had gastroenteritis. Assuming cellulitis, flucloxacillin was began. Early during admission, surgical subcutaneous abscess drainage was performed and Salmonella enteritidis was identified. According to bacterial susceptibility, antibiotherapy was changed to ceftriaxone. A foot radiograph and an MRI scan, performed on the 9th and the 12th days, revealed findings suggestive of osteomyelitis of the metaphysis of the fifth metatarsal. Clinical worsening persisted and surgical extensive debridement was needed. A 6-week antibiotic treatment was completed, with a good outcome. Osteomyelitis with a poor evolution in children with risk factors (prior gastrointestinal illness, warm weather and previous exposure to antibiotics) can raise the possibility of a non-typhoidal Salmonella infection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
