Cast within the framework of small open economy that periodically faces balance of payments crises, the theoretical model developed in this study can be utilized to study the devaluation experiences of the Philippines. Such model provides not only a test for validity and relevance but also an indication of the costs of devaluation as a tool for achieving external balance.trade sector, devaluation, balance of payments

Identification and mapping of a new apple scab resistance gene

    Get PDF
Here we report the identification of a new resistance gene (Vd3) against apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) from the apple selection 1980-015-25 of the breeding program at Plant Research International. This accession also contains the Vf gene. We mapped Vd3, using SSR and DArT markers, on linkage group 1, at a distance of 6 cM from Vf gene, but in repulsion phase to Vf. Based on pedigree analysis and resistance tests, it could be deduced that 1980-015-25 had inherited Vd3 from the founder D3. This gene provides resistance to the highly virulent EU-NL-24 strain of the race 7 of V. inaequalis. This strain has overcome the resistance from both Vf and Vg. However, Vd3 has been not effective against the majority of other V. inaequalis strains we used in our disease test

Government Guarantees in Infrastructure Projects: A Second, Third Look at the Policy

    Get PDF
To encourage private sector participation in public infrastructure projects, government guarantee has been utilized as an instrument to mitigate the risks associated with public investments. However, this creates contingent liabilities that the government has to face. This issue argues that the government must move towards project financing structures having less provision for subsidies and guarantees. Private sector should then have greater risk participation while strict monitoring measures should be implemented concerning contingent liabilities.government guarantee, public infrastructure projects, BOT scheme, private sector participation, contingent liability

A New Vision and Credit Policy Framework for Financing LGUs Basic Services and Development Projects

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new vision and the proposed policy framework for financing local government’s basic services and development projects. This vision intends to wean away the LGUs from their dependence on the national government and to promote a more effective private sector participation in developing and funding local projects. The credit policy framework aims to direct and make LGUs creditworthy to the private sources of capital.local government unit, capital markets, services sector, credit program

Clinical and pathologic remission of pediatric ulcerative colitis with serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin added to the standard treatment regimen

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that is particularly troublesome for pediatric patients, as current therapeutic options consist of biologic agents and steroids which alter the immune response and have the harmful side effect of leaving the patient more susceptible to opportunistic infections and eventual surgery. Another option for therapy exists in the form of serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI), the key ingredient in a medical food, EnteraGam®. The FDA has reviewed the safety of SBI and issued a no challenge letter to the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) findings for this medical food. The product also has no known food or drug interactions, no significant adverse effects, and no contraindications, save for beef allergy. SBI has been shown to induce clinical remission in adult populations and to decrease markers of inflammation in pediatric patients. Here, we present a detailed case of pediatric UC, including documentation of mucosal healing and decrease in pediatric UC activity index in a difficult to treat pediatric patient, after the addition of SBI to this patient’s treatment regimen

Identification and mapping of the novel apple scab resistance gene Vd3

Apple scab, caused by the fungal pathogen Venturia inaequalis, is one of the most devastating diseases for the apple growing in temperate zones with humid springs and summers. Breeding programs around the world have been able to identify several sources of resistance, the Vf from Malus floribunda 821 being the most frequently used. The appearance of two new races of V. inaequalis (races 6 and 7) in several European countries that are able to overcome the resistance of the Vf gene put in evidence the necessity of the combination of different resistance genes in the same genotype (pyramiding). Here, we report the identification and mapping of a new apple scab resistance gene (Vd3) from the resistant selection “1980-015-25” of the apple breeding program at Plant Research International, The Netherlands. This selection contains also the Vf gene and the novel V25 gene for apple scab resistance. We mapped Vd3 on linkage group 1, 1 cM to the south of Vf in repulsion phase to it. Based on pedigree analysis and resistance tests, it could be deduced that 1980-015-25 had inherited Vd3 from the founder “D3.” This gene provides resistance to the highly virulent EU-NL-24 strain of race 7 of V. inaequalis capable of overcoming the resistance from Vf and Vg

Remarks on Articulation of Outcome-Based Education in Graduate Education: A Practitioner -Action Research

This paper is intended primarily for the purpose of giving remarks to how Outcome-Based Education is being articulated in the graduate education as an auspicious avenue for practitioner-action research. Beaming with this paper, the goodness-of fit between Theory and Practice utilizing Outcome-Based Education through the presentation of Hatch and Schultz Model on organizational identity dynamics and Argyris leaning on scientific feedback loop models were underscored in the research of Cruz (2015) and Doctolero (2015). As discreetly used in this research, Hatch and Schultz eminently model Organizational Identity Dynamics tapping two concerns: (1) How learning outcomes are demonstrated by the learners as set by the Professors in the Institute of Education and (2) How pre-requisite skills on research are exhibited by the class in the Graduate Studies.
