    The theory of ‘objective thought’ can be characterized as an essential core of the Hegelian philosophy and, at the same time, as one of its most indigestible kernels. This theory, at the intersection of foundational and epistemological problems, on the one hand, provides Hegel’s solution to the problem of the relation between being and thought. On the other hand, this theory is the result of a powerful conceptual torsion carried out by Hegel on the notion of thought. This torsion consists, in a first approximation, of a strong enlargement of the scope of such a notion, articulated principally in two steps. In the first step, we have an enlargement within the finite subject, inside the mental realm. Thought (conceived of as Denken) becomes, from a mental faculty or activity separated from the other mental activities, an active element working in an unconscious and instinctual way in the whole of the mental. This step, naturally, requires a redefinition of thought as a faculty or activity, i.e. a redefinition of conscious and reflective thought (conceived of as Nachdenken). In the second step, the scope of the notion of thought is enlarged in order to encompass reality in all of its different spheres, natural and spiritual. Here, thought is conceived as the logicrational structure of reality. With this further step, thought evades the mental sphere in which it would be enclosed on a merely psychological account. In this paper, I will move from the assumption that the first step, providing a first sense in which objectivity can be attributed to thought, is a necessary, though insufficient, condition for the second step, and then for the further sense of this attribution. Thus, I will attempt to provide a conceptual map of the fundamental distinctions within the notion of thought, particularly regarding the first step of this conceptual torsion

    The starting point of this paper is the convinction that normativity is a notion through which we can fruitfully interrogate Hegel’s thought from the background of questions of the contemporary debate on naturalism. The thesis I want to argue for is that a material normativity can be found in Hegel’s philosophy. This normativity is not reducible to intra-mental relations, such as inferential or semantic relationships, or relations between an abstract concept or model and his object. In Hegel’s philosophy there is an ontological side of normativity that provides an anchor in the world to the activity of thought. In Hegel’s perspective, there is a material link between the normativity of thought and objective world. This link highlights the difference between Hegel’s way of considering thinking activity and the formalistic conception of thought. Hegel conceives of thought as an activity that regulates and determines itself by itself in thinking the otherness of the object, that is responding to its normative demands. This self-determining and self-regulating capacity of thought is its freedom. Therefore, if it is possible to acknowledge a social ground of reason and normativity, this self regulating and self-determining capacity of thought in responding to the normative demands of the world can be seen as Hegel’s strategy to solve the problem of cultural and social relativism of the conceptual schemes

    Daily functioning, problem solving and satisfaction for quality of life in visually impaired old persons

    Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of several dimensions of functioning on satisfaction for quality of life (QoL) experienced by visually impaired older adults. Participants: A sample of 58 older adults (37 women and 21 men) was involved in the study. Their age ranged from 50 to 88 years (M=68.95, SD=1.51). They were characterized by visual impairment of different origin and visual acuity (VA) ranging from 4/10 to total blindness. The QoL questionnaire was used along with short form-12 health Survey, the National Eye Institute visual function questionnaire-25 and problem solving inventory (PSI) which analyzes problem solving appraisal. Results: A stepwise regression analysis was conducted in order to find predictors of satisfaction for QoL. A contribution of mental and physical health, more specifically, of problem solving appraisal was found. Conclusion: Results support the notion that the functional relationship between visual impairment and satisfaction for QoL must be understood in terms of approaches that incorporate psychological and socio-cognitive elements. Problem solving appraisal, in fact, makes a substantial contribution to the prediction of variance in life satisfaction and it may play an important role for intervention strategies

    Hidden secrets of the Northern Adriatic: "Tegnúe", peculiar reefs

    Abstract Research carried out over the last 40 years has underlined the scientific importance of the rocky outcrops scattered on the Northern Adriatic Sea bed sometimes referred to as "tegnúe". The zoobenthic biocenoses developing over these peculiar geological formations are as extraordinary as they are unique. A study carried out for an entire year in two sampling stations, at different distances from the coast, revealed a very high number of zoobenthic species, including those which have now become rare and are therefore protected in Italian seas. The water turbidity of the northern Adriatic Sea greatly reduces the quantity of light reaching these outcrops, limiting the activity of autotrophic organisms only to sciaphilous genera. Thus, the most represented trophic categories of zoobenthos are suspension, especially filter feeders. Biodiversity values calculated for the communities of these particular reefs are far higher than normally found in the soft seabed in nearby areas, but even higher than in other coralligenous outcrops in other marine ecosystem in the world. The ecological role played by the tegnúe in the Northern Adriatic is extraordinary because as well as being true oases of biodiversity, they are areas naturally protected against bottom trawl-fishing. Thus, they offer shelter and reproduction sites for a number of fish and invertebrate species, including some under stress due to severe fishing pressure

    Molecular data reveal cryptic species within the most common tarantula spider from Argentina, Catumiri argentinense (ARANEAE: THERAPHOSIDAE)

    Ischnocolinae is one of 11 subfamilies of the family Theraphosidae and has an intricate taxonomy, much like most theraphosid taxa. The genus Catumiri Guadanucci, 2004 comprises small-sized theraphosids and presently includes four species: C. argentinense (Mello-Leitão, 1941), C. chicaoi Guadanucci, 2004, C. parvum (Keyserling, 1878), and C. petropolium Guadanucci, 2004 (type species of the genus). Catumiri argentinense is present in Argentina and Chile and perhaps is the most common and abundant theraphosid spider in the first country. Moreover, its distribution covers from the north of provinces of Jujuy and Salta, until southern La Pampa province. The holotype female is described from Catamarca province and the allotype male from Jujuy province, both about 500 km distant from each other. Although some species of Catumiri show a conservative morphology, e.g., females of C. argentinense cannot be distinguished from those of C. parvum by morphology, instead they are differenced by the geographical distribution, we have been observed many differences in somatic characters and even genitalic among some populations of C. argentinense. Rather than find support for one taxon as previously hypothesized, species delimitation from COI sequences using multiple approaches reveal C. argentinense as a complex of cryptic species comprising lineages from Tres Cerros (Corrientes), Tandilia (Buenos Aires), Pampean grasslands (Córdoba + Santiago del Estero), Ñacuñán (Mendoza) and Tucumán + Jujuy (identified as C. argentinense), most of them undistinguishable by morphological characters, other presenting new characters for the genus.Fil: Ferretti, Nelson Edgardo.     This review covers the role of ultrasonography as an essential non-invasive diagnostic approach when facing patients with anaemia, a common clinical problem. Abdomen ultrasound is well recognised as a first-line examination in the setting of blood loss, both acute and chronic. Less is clear about the additional opportunities, given by ultrasound in anaemia, due to the many other possible causes. Here we provide information on the utility of ultrasound in different contexts and a practical guide for clinicians facing anaemic patients

    Non invasive tools for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis

    Liver cirrhosis (LC), the end stage of many forms of chronic hepatitis of different etiologies is a diffuse process characterized by fibrosis and the conversion of normal liver architecture into structurally abnormal nodules surrounded by annular fibrosis. This chronic progressive clinical condition, leads to liver cell failure and portal hypertension, which can favour the onset of hepatocellular carcinoma. Defining the phase of the natural history is crucial for therapeutic choice and prognosis. Liver biopsy is currently considered the best available standard of reference but it has some limits, so alternative tools have been developed to substitute liver biopsy when assessing liver fibrosis. Serum markers offer a cost-effective alternative to liver biopsy being less invasive and theoretically without complications. They can be classified into direct and indirect markers which may be used alone or in combination to produce composite scores. Diagnostic imaging includes a number of instruments and techniques to estimate liver fibrosis and cirrhosis like ultrasound (US), US Doppler, contrast enhanced US and Elastography. US could be used for the diagnosis of advanced LC while is not able to evaluate progression of fibrosis, in this case Elastography is more reliable. This review aims to revise the most recent data from the literature about non invasive methods useful in defining liver fibrosis

    An unusual Erdheim-Chester disease with orbital involvement: A case report

    Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with multiorgan involvement and a specific tropism for perivascular and fatty connective tissue, of unclear origin, with poor response to therapy. Its identification is difficult because of the variable clinical presentation and its lack of knowledge. We report the case of a 63-years-old woman, with a history of bilateral orbital pseudotumor, who comes to our attention because of progressively worsening asthenia, vomiting and systemic inflammation. Total body computerized tomography scan showed a volumetric increase of choroid plexus of the temporal horn of the left lateral ventricle, presence of solid retrobulbar tissue at the level of both maxillary sinuses, lung fibrosis, and retroperitoneal and peri-aortic infiltration. The association of these signs addressed to a diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease. Thus, although extremely rare, the diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease must be considered in the case of bilateral retro-orbital tumors and multisystemic involvement

    Progressive visceral leishmaniasis misdiagnosed as cirrhosis of the liver: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Visceral leishmaniasis is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease which is caused by parasites of the genus <it>Leishmania</it> and characterized in most cases by the presence of fever as well as signs and symptoms similar to those found in liver cirrhosis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>In this case report we describe the history of a 50-year-old Caucasian man incorrectly diagnosed as having hepatitis C virus-associated liver cirrhosis, with a massive weight loss of around 100 kg during the previous 2 years. However, suspecting a lymphoproliferative disorder, we were able to make a correct diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis by bone marrow examination. After a course of therapy with Liposomal Amphotericin-B the patient recovered and now, 20 months post-treatment, he is well and has regained a good part of the lost weight.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case taught us that patients with massive splenomegaly, even with a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis, should be investigated for infectious or lymphoproliferative diseases.</p
