    Vacuum switching experiments at California Institute of Technology

    Successful experiments in switching or breaking a circuit in a high vacuum have been made at the California Institute of Technology. This paper is a report on three sets of these experiments which extended over a period of three years. The conclusions drawn from the experiments may be summed up in the statement that vacuum breakers of laboratory type have been successful in breaking circuits and offer a possible solution of the circuit-breaker problem. The results show that switching in vacuum affords the advantages of no pitting of contacts, quick break, the arc always going out on the first half cycle, small voltage rise across the switch, and small distance of travel necessary for the switch blades. Making the vacuum switch practical calls for a solution of the problem of making commercial apparatus with vacuum-tight joints, and the elimination of the use of liquid air with the vacuum pump

    SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 Hamiltonians with RVB and other valence bond phases

    We construct a family of rotationally invariant, local, S=1/2 Klein Hamiltonians on various lattices that exhibit ground state manifolds spanned by nearest-neighbor valence bond states. We show that with selected perturbations such models can be driven into phases modeled by well understood quantum dimer models on the corresponding lattices. Specifically, we show that the perturbation procedure is arbitrarily well controlled by a new parameter which is the extent of decoration of the reference lattice. This strategy leads to Hamiltonians that exhibit i) Z2Z_2 RVB phases in two dimensions, ii) U(1) RVB phases with a gapless ``photon'' in three dimensions, and iii) a Cantor deconfined region in two dimensions.     Clustered bottlenecks in mRNA translation and protein synthesis

    We construct an algorithm that generates large, band-diagonal transition matrices for a totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with local hopping rate inhomogeneities. The matrices are diagonalized numerically to find steady-state currents of TASEPs with local variations in hopping rate. The results are then used to investigate clustering of slow codons along mRNA. Ribosome density profiles near neighboring clusters of slow codons interact, enhancing suppression of ribosome throughput when such bottlenecks are closely spaced. Increasing the slow codon cluster size, beyond ≈3−4\approx 3-4, does not significantly reduce ribosome current. Our results are verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations and provide a biologically-motivated explanation for the experimentally-observed clustering of low-usage codons

    Exposing errors related to weak memory in GPU applications

    © 2016 ACM.We present the systematic design of a testing environment that uses stressing and fuzzing to reveal errors in GPU applications that arise due to weak memory effects. We evaluate our approach on seven GPUS spanning three NVIDIA architectures, across ten CUDA applications that use fine-grained concurrency. Our results show that applications that rarely or never exhibit errors related to weak memory when executed natively can readily exhibit these errors when executed in our testing environment. Our testing environment also provides a means to help identify the root causes of such errors, and automatically suggests how to insert fences that harden an application against weak memory bugs. To understand the cost of GPU fences, we benchmark applications with fences provided by the hardening strategy as well as a more conservative, sound fencing strategy

    The Stellar Content of Obscured Galactic Giant HII Regions V: G333.1--0.4

    We present high angular resolution near--infrared images of the obscured Galactic Giant HII (GHII) region G333.1--0.4 in which we detect an OB star cluster. For G333.1--0.4, we find OB stars and other massive objects in very early evolutionary stages, possibly still accreting. We obtained KK--band spectra of three stars; two show O type photospheric features, while the third has no photospheric features but does show CO 2.3 ÎŒ\mum band--head emission. This object is at least as hot as an early B type star based on its intrinsic luminosity and is surrounded by a circumstellar disc/envelope which produces near infrared excess emission. A number of other relatively bright cluster members also display excess emission in the KK--band, indicative of disks/envelopes around young massive stars. Based upon the O star photometry and spectroscopy, the distance to the cluster is 2.6 ±\pm 0.4 kpc, similar to a recently derived kinematic (near side) value. The slope of the KK--band luminosity function is similar to those found in other young clusters. The mass function slope is more uncertain, and we find −1.3±0.2<Γ<−1.1±0.2-1.3 \pm 0.2 < \Gamma < -1.1 \pm 0.2- for stars with M >5> 5 M⊙_\odot where the upper an lower limits are calculated independently for different assumptions regarding the excess emission of the individual massive stars. The number of Lyman continuum photons derived from the contribution of all massive stars in the cluster is 0.2 ×\times 105010^{50} s−1s^{-1} <NLyc<1.9< NLyc < 1.9 ×\times 105010^{50} s−1s^{-1}. The integrated cluster mass is 1.0 ×\times 10310^{3} M⊙<Mcluster<1.3M_\odot < M_{cluster} < 1.3 ×\times 10310^{3} M⊙M_\odot.Comment: 31 pages, including 12 figures and 3 tables.
