Relativistic Elasticity
Relativistic elasticity on an arbitrary spacetime is formulated as a
Lagrangian field theory which is covariant under spacetime diffeomorphisms.
This theory is the relativistic version of classical elasticity in the
hyperelastic, materially frame-indifferent case and, on Minkowski space,
reduces to the latter in the non-relativistic limit . The field equations are
cast into a first -- order symmetric hyperbolic system. As a consequence one
obtains local--in--time existence and uniqueness theorems under various

Reflecting photonics: reaching new audiences through new partnerships – IYL 2015 and the Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show
The ‘Reflecting Photonics’ show garden was exhibited at the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Flower Show in Tatton Park, UK, to celebrate the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. Elks-Smith Garden Design alongside landscapers ‘Turf N’ Earth’ collaborated with researchers, marketing and outreach professionals from the University of Southampton to design, construct and exhibit a photonics-themed garden. The garden and supporting exhibition united science and art to reach new audiences – particularly family groups alongside other key influencers to the young – and showcased the world-leading research in optical fibers at the university in an accessible manner. Researchers and a publicity professional, funded by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Photonics, developed an integrated approach to the event’s public engagement and marketing. The overarching aim was to influence a positive change in the attitude of the garden visitors towards physics and photonics, with additional focus on promoting careers for women in STEM. The show garden won an RHS Gold Medal award and the coveted ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the best large garden. The project subsequently won the South East England Physics Network Public Engagement Innovation Project Award. Approximately 80,000 visitors saw the garden, with a further three million television viewers on a popular British gardening show. There were also over 75,400 Tweet impressions on social media. This paper discusses the project aims, explores the design of the garden and its relationship with the research, describes the work of the public engagement team, and outlines the impact of the event
Multivariate discrimination and the Higgs + W/Z search
A systematic method for optimizing multivariate discriminants is developed
and applied to the important example of a light Higgs boson search at the
Tevatron and the LHC. The Significance Improvement Characteristic (SIC),
defined as the signal efficiency of a cut or multivariate discriminant divided
by the square root of the background efficiency, is shown to be an extremely
powerful visualization tool. SIC curves demonstrate numerical instabilities in
the multivariate discriminants, show convergence as the number of variables is
increased, and display the sensitivity to the optimal cut values. For our
application, we concentrate on Higgs boson production in association with a W
or Z boson with H -> bb and compare to the irreducible standard model
background, Z/W + bb. We explore thousands of experimentally motivated,
physically motivated, and unmotivated single variable discriminants. Along with
the standard kinematic variables, a number of new ones, such as twist, are
described which should have applicability to many processes. We find that some
single variables, such as the pull angle, are weak discriminants, but when
combined with others they provide important marginal improvement. We also find
that multiple Higgs boson-candidate mass measures, such as from mild and
aggressively trimmed jets, when combined may provide additional discriminating
power. Comparing the significance improvement from our variables to those used
in recent CDF and DZero searches, we find that a 10-20% improvement in
significance against Z/W + bb is possible. Our analysis also suggests that the
H + W/Z channel with H -> bb is also viable at the LHC, without requiring a
hard cut on the W/Z transverse momentum.Comment: 41 pages, 5 tables, 29 figure
Femto-Photography of Protons to Nuclei with Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering
Developments in deeply virtual Compton scattering allow the direct
measurements of scattering amplitudes for exchange of a highly virtual photon
with fine spatial resolution. Real-space images of the target can be obtained
from this information. Spatial resolution is determined by the momentum
transfer rather than the wavelength of the detected photon. Quantum photographs
of the proton, nuclei, and other elementary particles with resolution on the
scale of a fraction of a femtometer is feasible with existing experimental

Discrete microfluidics for the isolation of circulating tumor cell subpopulations targeting fibroblast activation protein alpha and epithelial cell adhesion molecule
Circulating tumor cells consist of phenotypically distinct subpopulations that originate from the tumor microenvironment. We report a circulating tumor cell dual selection assay that uses discrete microfluidics to select circulating tumor cell subpopulations from a single blood sample; circulating tumor cells expressing the established marker epithelial cell adhesion molecule and a new marker, fibroblast activation protein alpha, were evaluated. Both circulating tumor cell subpopulations were detected in metastatic ovarian, colorectal, prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancer patients and 90% of the isolated circulating tumor cells did not co-express both antigens. Clinical sensitivities of 100% showed substantial improvement compared to epithelial cell adhesion molecule selection alone. Owing to high purity (>80%) of the selected circulating tumor cells, molecular analysis of both circulating tumor cell subpopulations was carried out in bulk, including next generation sequencing, mutation analysis, and gene expression. Results suggested fibroblast activation protein alpha and epithelial cell adhesion molecule circulating tumor cells are distinct subpopulations and the use of these in concert can provide information needed to navigate through cancer disease management challenges
QCD Form Factors and Hadron Helicity Non-Conservation
Recent data for the ratio shocked the
community by disobeying expectations held for 50 years. We examine the status
of perturbative QCD predictions for helicity-flip form factors. Contrary to
common belief, we find there is no rule of hadron helicity conservation for
form factors. Instead the analysis yields an inequality that the leading power
of helicity-flip processes may equal or exceed the power of helicity conserving
processes. Numerical calculations support the rule, and extend the result to
the regime of laboratory momentum transfer . Quark orbital angular
momentum, an important feature of the helicity flip processes, may play a role
in all form factors at large , depending on the quark wave functions.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

Eliminating Malaria Vectors.
Malaria vectors which predominantly feed indoors upon humans have been locally eliminated from several settings with insecticide treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying or larval source management. Recent dramatic declines of An. gambiae in east Africa with imperfect ITN coverage suggest mosquito populations can rapidly collapse when forced below realistically achievable, non-zero thresholds of density and supporting resource availability. Here we explain why insecticide-based mosquito elimination strategies are feasible, desirable and can be extended to a wider variety of species by expanding the vector control arsenal to cover a broader spectrum of the resources they need to survive. The greatest advantage of eliminating mosquitoes, rather than merely controlling them, is that this precludes local selection for behavioural or physiological resistance traits. The greatest challenges are therefore to achieve high biological coverage of targeted resources rapidly enough to prevent local emergence of resistance and to then continually exclude, monitor for and respond to re-invasion from external populations
