    Diet of children under the government-funded meal support program in Korea

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the diet of children under the government-funded meal support program. The 143 children (67 boys and 76 girls) participated in this study among 4th-6th elementary school students receiving free lunches during the summer vacation of 2007 and living in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, Korea. The subjects consisted of four groups supported by Meal Box Delivery (n = 26), Institutional Foodservice (n = 53), Restaurant Foodservice (n = 27), or Food Delivery (n = 37). A three-day 24-hour dietary recall and a self-administered survey were conducted. In addition, the children's heights and weights were measured. The average energy intake of the children was 1,400 kcal per day, much lower than the Estimated Energy Requirements of the pertinent age groups. The results also showed inadequate intake of all examined nutrients; of particular concern was the extremely low intake of calcium. On average, the children consumed eight dishes and 25 food items per day. The children supported by Meal Box Delivery consumed more various dishes and food items than the other groups. The percentage of children preferring their current meal support method was the highest in those supported by Meal Box Delivery and the lowest in those supported by Food Delivery. We requested 15 children among the 143 children participating in the survey to draw the scene of their lunch time. The drawings of the children supported by Institutional Foodservice showed more positive scenes than the other groups, especially in terms of human aspects. In conclusion, the overall diet of children under the government-funded meal support program was nutritionally inadequate, although the magnitude of the problems tended to differ by the meal support method. The results could be utilized as basic data for policy and programs regarding the government-funded meal support program for children from low-income families

    Design of a CMOS Image Sensor with Bi-Directional Gamma-Corrected Digital-Correlated Double Sampling

    We present a 640 × 480 CMOS image sensor (CIS) with in-circuit bi-directional gamma correction with a proposed digital-correlated double sampling (CDS) structure. To operate the gamma correction in the CIS, the transfer function of the analog-to-digital converter can be changed by controlling the clock frequency of the counter using analog CDS. However, the analog CDS is vulnerable to capacitor mismatch, clock feedthrough, etc. Therefore, we propose a digital-CDS method with a hold-and-go counter structure to operate the bi-directional gamma correction in the CIS. The proposed CIS achieves a 10-bit resolution using a global log-exponential counter and configurable column reset counter with a resolution of 8/9 bits. The sensor was fabricated in a 0.11 μm CIS process, and the full chip area was 5.9 mm × 5.24 mm. The measurement results showed a maximum SNR improvement of 10.41% with the proposed bi-directional gamma-corrected digital-CDS with the hold-and-go counter. The total power consumption was 6.3 mW at a rate of 16.6 frames per second with analog, pixel, and digital supply voltages of 3.3 V, 3.3 V, and 1.5 V, respectively

    Detection of masses in mammograms using a one-stage object detector based on a deep convolutional neural network.

    Several computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed for mammography. They are widely used in certain countries such as the U.S. where mammography studies are conducted more frequently; however, they are not yet globally employed for clinical use due to their inconsistent performance, which can be attributed to their reliance on hand-crafted features. It is difficult to use hand-crafted features for mammogram images that vary due to factors such as the breast density of patients and differences in imaging devices. To address these problems, several studies have leveraged a deep convolutional neural network that does not require hand-crafted features. Among the recent object detectors, RetinaNet is particularly promising as it is a simpler one-stage object detector that is fast and efficient while achieving state-of-the-art performance. RetinaNet has been proven to perform conventional object detection tasks but has not been tested on detecting masses in mammograms. Thus, we propose a mass detection model based on RetinaNet. To validate its performance in diverse use cases, we construct several experimental setups using the public dataset INbreast and the in-house dataset GURO. In addition to training and testing on the same dataset (i.e., training and testing on INbreast), we evaluate our mass detection model in setups using additional training data (i.e., training on INbreast + GURO and testing on INbreast). We also evaluate our model in setups using pre-trained weights (i.e., using weights pre-trained on GURO, training and testing on INbreast). In all the experiments, our mass detection model achieves comparable or better performance than more complex state-of-the-art models including the two-stage object detector. Also, the results show that using the weights pre-trained on datasets achieves similar performance as directly using datasets in the training phase. Therefore, we make our mass detection model's weights pre-trained on both GURO and INbreast publicly available. We expect that researchers who train RetinaNet on their in-house dataset for the mass detection task can use our pre-trained weights to leverage the features extracted from the datasets

    Current Status, Challenges, Policies, and Bioethics of Biobanks

    Many biobanks were established as biorepositories for biomedical research, and a number of biobanks were founded in the 1990s. The main aim of the biobank is to store and to maintain biomaterials for studying chronic disease, identifying risk factors of specific diseases, and applying personalized drug therapies. This report provides a review of biobanks, including Korean biobanks and an analysis of sample volumes, regulations, policies, and ethical issues of the biobank. Until now, the top 6 countries according to the number of large-scale biobanks are the United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, and Italy, and there is one major National Biobank of Korea (NBK) and 17 regional biobanks in Korea. Many countries have regulations and guidelines for the biobanks, and the importance of good management of biobanks is increasing. Meanwhile, according to a first survey of 456 biobank managers in the United States, biobankers are concerned with the underuse of the samples in their repositories, which need to be advertised for researchers. Korea Biobank Network (KBN) project phase II (2013-2015) was also planned for the promotion to use biospecimens in the KBN. The KBN is continuously introducing for researchers to use biospecimens in the biobank. An accreditation process can also be introduced for biobanks to harmonize collections and encourage use of biospecimens in the biobanks. KBN is preparing an on-line application system for the distribution of biospecimens and a biobank accreditation program and is trying to harmonize the biobanks

    Trends of genital wart in Korea according to treatment method classification: Big data analysis of health care in 2010–2019

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate disease trend of genital wart through changes in each treatment method over the past 10 years in Korea. Materials and Methods: From 2010 to 2019, surgical treatment including cauterization, excision, cryotherapy, and laser therapy, non-surgical treatment such as podophyllin, and surgical treatment for anorectal lesion were extracted and analyzed from 2010 to 2019. For each treatment method, characteristics such as sex, age, region, medical cost and average number of procedures were analyzed. Results: The number of patients following all treatment modalities increased every year. Surgical treatment of genital wart and anorectal wart showed a significant increase in male patients. Number of non-surgical treatment decreased in males but increased in females. Surgical removal of the anorectal wart increased more than 250% in over 10 years, and males underwent surgery 4 times more than females. In both surgery and non-surgery, the mean session was higher in males. Most of them were carried out in primary medical institutions. In Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, the largest number of patients received treatment regardless of treatment method. Conclusions: Treatment for genital warts has increased rapidly over the past 10 years, and the increase in males is remarkable. The main treatment was surgery, and males mainly received surgical treatment, and females mainly received drug treatment. The primary medical institution was in charge of the most treatment. As the number of patients and related medical expenses are increasing rapidly, more attention and response to diseases are needed

    High Expression of Tetraspanin 5 as a Prognostic Marker of Colorectal Cancer

    Cancer is a major disease and the leading cause of death worldwide, with colorectal cancer (CRC) being the third-most common cancer in Korea. The survival rate associated with CRC reduces as the disease stage increases. Therefore, its early detection and treatment can greatly increase patient survival rates. In this study, we identified the tetraspanin 5 (TSPAN5) gene as an important biomarker for predicting the prognosis of patients with CRC. A TMA slide was used for statistical analysis. pN and clinical stage were found to be significant factors according to chi-square analysis, whereas pT, pN, metastasis, clinical stage, and TSPAN5 expression were significant according to Cox regression analysis. In order to prove the usefulness of TSPAN5, which is overexpressed in patients with metastatic CRC, as a biomarker, proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumorigenicity were examined using cell lines inhibited using small interfering RNA. The evaluations confirmed that TSPAN5 suppression, in turn, suppressed proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumorigenesis, which are characteristic of cancer cells. Therefore, the evaluation of TSPAN5 expression may help observe the prognosis of CRC and determine an appropriate treatment method for patients with CRC
