Quasiscarred modes and their branching behavior at an exceptional point

We study quasiscarring phenomenon and mode branching at an exceptional point (EP) in typically deformed microcavities. It is shown that quasiscarred (QS) modes are dominant in some mode group and their pattern can be understood by short-time ray dynamics near the critical line. As cavity deformation increases, high-Q and low-Q QS modes are branching in an opposite way, at an EP, into two robust mode types showing QS and diamond patterns, respectively. Similar branching behavior can be also found at another EP appearing at a higher deformation. This branching behavior of QS modes has its origin on the fact that an EP is a square-root branch point.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Korean Pre-service Teachers\u27 Perception of Parent-Teacher Partnership: The Effects of Motivation and Teaching Beliefs

This chapter examined early childhood pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the parent-teacher partnership, especially for the interaction effect between motivation and teaching beliefs on the parent-teacher partnership among Korean early childhood pre-service teachers. The participants for this study included 265 pre-service teachers in two different types of childhood teacher education programs (early childhood education and elementary education) in Seoul, Kyunggi, and Busan in Korea. The results from t-tests and ANOVA showed that pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the parent-teacher partnership were differentiated by student status in the teacher education program with discrete differences depending on subfactors. Constructivist teaching beliefs were the most significant variable to predict the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the parent-teacher partnership. Even though there were no statistically meaningful interaction effects between intrinsic motivation and constructivist teaching beliefs, two-way interaction plots implied interaction effects between these two predictors. Based on the results, we discussed the implications of the results in regard to curriculum development and educational policy for future endeavors to enhance teacher education quality and educational effectiveness

Family Experiences in End-of-Life Care: A Literature Review

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to summarize and analyze families' experiences of end-of-life care by conducting a systematic review of peer reviewed journals both in Korea and abroad.BackgroundFamilies play an increasingly important role in care and medical treatment, acting as caregivers or decision makers rather than just being passive observers. It is necessary to understand the experiences of family members in order to provide appropriate care for them.MethodsA systematic search of the literature was performed using the Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and the Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS) for the period of January 1990 through to December 2006. A total of 35 studies met the inclusion criteria.ResultsSeventeen studies used a quantitative design, while 18 studies used qualitative methods. Quantitative studies reported that the family's quality of life was relatively low when the patient was in need of high medical/nursing services. The perceived burden levels were moderately high, and depression levels were high among family caregivers. Various concepts emerged from the 18 qualitative studies, including psychological issues, physical problems, burdens, needs and interpersonal relationships.ConclusionThis study found that most previous research findings were focused on negative and neutral experiences. A few studies identified positive experiences. Based on the study results, we suggest that nurses need to be more aware of the experiences of patients' families and their potential needs

Investigation of the SH3BP2 Gene Mutation in Cherubism

Cherubism is a rare developmental lesion of the jaw that is generally inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Recent studies have revealed point mutations in the SH3BP2 gene in cherubism patients. In this study, we examined a 6-year-old Korean boy and his family. We found a Pro418Arg mutation in the SH3BP2 gene of the patient and his mother. A father and his 30-month-old younger brother had no mutations. Immunohistochemically, the multinucleated giant cells proved positive for CD68 and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). Numerous spindle-shaped stromal cells expressed a ligand for receptor activator of nuclear factor kB (RANKL), but not in multinucleated giant cells. These results provide evidence that RANKL plays a critical role in the differentiation of osteoclast precursor cells to multinucleated giant cells in cherubism. Additionally, genetic analysis may be a useful method for differentiation of cherubism.</p

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) intercepted on plant product imported to South Korea from 2013–2021

Current globalization and technological progress has facilitated and increased the international trade of plant products worldwide and has promoted the long-distance movement of immobile sucking pests such as whiteflies attached on plants. Therefore, being able to compile and update information on intercepted insect pests will help to improve the inspection procedures, to detect, identify and mitigate the damage caused by exotic invasive pests. Records of whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) intercepted on import plants from 2013 to 2021 in the Pest Information System (PIS) database of South Korea were analyzed. A total of 32 species belonging to 19 genera were intercepted on plants imported into South Korea from 20 countries, mostly located in the Oriental region including China. Brief diagnoses, an identification key and photographs of the 32 species intercepted on agricultural commodities and the countries from which they were detected on plants are given to assist in their identification. In addition, this information provides background data and scientific rationale for decisions regarding the management of whiteflies intercepted at the South Korean ports on imported plant products to prevent the introduction and establishment of exotic whiteflies into South Korea
