Un’“apparizione meravigliosa, quasi Inverosimile”: Tracce di musa nei versi di In un giardino ‘italiano’
Montale’s life and poetry are crowded with what critics refer to as figure femminili – so much so that Maria Antonietta Grignani, one of Montale’s finest readers, talks about quaestio de mulieribus. What all these women have in common is their election from persone storiche to persone poetiche in order to fulfil a demanding mission: to save the poet from his male di vivere. This article presents for the first time evidence of yet another female presence. A doctor by profession, a trained violinist and a self-taught literary translator, Edith Farnsworth – from the US, like Irma Brandeis – appears towards the end of Montale’s life, in time however to initiate a personal and poetic relationship that is documented in one of Montale’s finest late poems, In un giardino ‘italiano’
Film-forming thermoresponsive nanogels for dermal protein delivery
Thermoresponsive nanogels (NGs) have great potential as nanocarriers because of their high in aqueous solutions, elevated biocompatibility, high loading capacity, controlled release of an active component, fast response to temperature change, and design flexibility. In this scenario, a NG dispersion with a film forming ability could be useful for designing a dermal platform for drugs delivery, where the delivering film/patch could be previously obtained or directly formed onto the surface where the release is required.

Sustainable solutions for the construction sector: integration of secondary raw materials in the production cycle of concrete
The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of raw materials and energy and one of the highest contributor to green-houses gases emissions. In order to become more sustainable it needs to reduce the use of both raw materials and energy, thus lim-iting its environmental impact. Developing novel technologies to integrate secondary raw materials (i.e. lightweight recycled aggre-gates and alkali activated “cementless” binders - geopolymers) in the production cycle of concrete is an all-inclusive solution to im-prove both sustainability and cost-efficiency of construction industry. SUS-CON “SUStainable, Innovative and Energy-Efficiency CONcrete, based on the integration of all-waste materials” is an European project (duration 2012-2015), which aim was the inte-gration of secondary raw materials in the production cycle of concrete, thus resulting in innovative, sustainable and cost-effective building solutions. This paper presents the main outcomes related to the successful scaling-up of SUS-CON concrete solutions in traditional production plants. Two European industrial concrete producers have been involved, to design and produce both pre-cast components (blocks and panels) and ready-mixed concrete. Recycled polyurethane foams and mixed plastics were used as aggre-gates, PFA (Pulverized Fuel Ash, a by-product of coal fuelled power plants) and GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag, a by-product of iron and steel industries) as binders. Eventually, the installation of SUS-CON concrete solutions on real buildings has been demonstrated, with the construction of three mock-ups located in Europe (Spain, Turkey and Romania
Nuclear matrix element for two neutrino double beta decay from 136Xe
The nuclear matrix element for the two neutrino double beta decay (DBD) of
136Xe was evaluated by FSQP (Fermi Surface Quasi Particle model), where
experimental GT strengths measured by the charge exchange reaction and those by
the beta decay rates were used. The 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is given by
the sum of products of the single beta matrix elements via low-lying (Fermi
Surface) quasi-particle states in the intermediate nucleus. 136Xe is the
semi-magic nucleus with the closed neutron-shell, and the beta + transitions
are almost blocked. Thus the 2 neutrino DBD is much suppressed. The evaluated 2
neutrino DBD matrix element is consistent with the observed value.Comment: 7 pages 6 figure

What is known about deferasirox chelation therapy in pediatric HSCT recipients: two case reports of metabolic acidosis
To date, in pediatric field, various hematological malignancies are increasingly treated with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Iron overload and systemic siderosis often occur in this particular cohort of patients and are associated with poor prognosis. We describe herein the case of two allo-HSCT patients, on treatment with deferasirox; they showed histopathological elements compatible with venoocclusive disease or vanishing bile duct syndrome in ductopenic evolution before deferasirox started. The first patient developed drug-induced liver damage with metabolic acidosis and the second one a liver impairment with Fanconi syndrome. After withdrawing deferasirox treatment, both patients showed improvement. Measurements of drug plasma concentrations were performed by HPLC assay. The reduction and consequent disappearance of symptoms after the suspension of deferasirox substantiate its role in inducing hepatic damage, probably enabling the diagnosis of drug-induced liver damage. But the difficulties in diagnosing drug-related toxicity must be underlined, especially in compromised subjects. For these reasons, in patients requiring iron-chelating therapy, close and careful drug therapeutic monitoring is strongly recommende
Great Lakes management: Ecological factors
Although attempts to improve the quality of the Great Lakes generally focus on chemical pollution, other factors are important and should be considered Ecological factors, such as invasion of the lakes by foreign species, habitat changes, overfishing, and random variations in organism populations, are especially influential. Lack of appreciation of the significance of ecological factors stems partly from the inappropriate application of the concept of eutrophication to the Great Lakes.
